Newcastle United are set to rekindle their long-held interest in West Ham United defender James Tomkins, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that the 26-year-old could be available for transfer this summer and that the Magpies are keeping an eye on his east London situation.
Long-tracked by Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr, Tomkins was close to move to St James’ Park two summers ago as he was also a firm favourite of Alan Pardew, only for it to fall through at the final hour.

Able to play at centre-back, defensive-midfield and, if necessary, full-back, Tomkins would add versatility to Newcastle – something the Magpies hierarchy cherish in potential recruits.
At 6ft 3in he would also offer some added height and power to McClaren’s defensive options. And, with more than 100 Premier League appearances to his name, he is one of the...

Here’s the thought process behind the majority of transfer rumours that you will see as a Newcastle fan over the next couple of months heading into the January transfer window: the club have no money, no real intent to buy anyone (maybe a centre-half, but who knows) and like bargains. Some will ignore those points entirely, and just claim we’re in the running for £25m rated defensive midfielders left, right and centre, but the majority of links will be for players in the last year of their contracts, or who are affordable thanks to a lack of form or some release clause. And also, inevitably, players called Andy Carroll.
That is clearly the thinking behind the “rumour” that Argentinian midfielder Nicolas Gaitan might be an option in January from Benfica. He’s in the last year of his contract, and thus would likely be available...

Having ignored the lessons offered by the Premier League’s relegated sides in the last ten years, and how many of them changed their managers, Mike Ashley is going to have to put his hands in his pockets if he is to see Newcastle avoid the embarrassment and financial ruin of a second relegation under the Sports Direct owner.
According to research by The Chronicle – one of the local newspapers petulantly banned for giving column inches to the protests that are now very much a big part of the match-day experience at St. James Park – the average spend of Premier League sides who started badly and managed to avoid the drop is £10m. This summer aside, that is considerably more than the owner has typically chosen to spend on the side, and it’s sadly unlikely that Ashley will invest as much, preferring,...

In some ways you really have to commend what Newcastle have achieved in the transfer market since 2009. They’ve set their own rules and their own valuations, and have gone after targets with a logical approach that means they have rarely paid over the odds on players who have turned out to be misfires. Yes, there have been high-profile mistakes like Sylvain Marveaux, Papiss Cisse (to a certain extent anyway) and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, but the real issue in all three cases is not the quality of the player or the price paid, but the manager attempting to get the best out of them.
After a summer of heady spending, something looks like it might have changed. There was already talk that the policy from now on would be the same as an over=packed nightclub – one in, one out – before the transfer window slammed shut with...

On Saturday, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored a screamer from the half-way line with pundits instantly drawing comparisons to a certain David Beckham goal 18 years ago.
For Rooney, the opponents were Sam Allardyce’s West Ham. For Beckham, Joe Kinnear’s Wimbledon hosted a United side far different to the one we see today.
Yet the similarities were stark.
Nearly 20 years ago, ‘Golden Balls’ scored a famously-audacious goal in August 1996 from inside his own half by lobbing goalkeeper Neil Sullivan with a worldy.
And this weekend, Rooney re-produced a near carbon copy by chipping Adrián from just inside West Ham’s half after catching the Spaniard wandering off his line.
The moment Rooney’s 57-yard screamer bounced into the Hammers goal, cameras instantly pointed to Beckham, who was in attendance at Upton Park and offered a wry smile.

James Tomkins and James Collins put in heroic defensive performances as West Ham picked up a priceless point away from home.
The Hammers’ defence produced a stubborn display to deny Jose Mourinho’s side their sixth straight win of 2014.
The match started at a frantic pace, Oscar testing Adrian after just 8 minutes with a curled effort from the edge of the box which the Spaniard tipped onto the bar.
Minutes later and West Ham had their first opportunity, Tomkins’ header drawing a good save from Petr Cech after Stewart Downing had whipped in a free-kick.
A fast-paced opening quarter of an hour was rounded off when Samuel Eto’o blazed over from the edge of the box, after Eden Hazard had headed down Branislav Ivanovic’s through-ball.
Following the 15 minute mark, the pace of the derby encounter began to slow with Chelsea dominating...

Premier League strugglers West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City misfit Joleon Lescott and bolster their beleaguered defence.
England international Lescott, 31, is no longer first choice at the Etihad under Manuel Pellegrini since the signings of Matija Nastasic and Martin Demichelis.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements as James Collins and Winston Reid are injured whilst James Tomkins is suspended. The East London outfit landed Wolves reject Roger Johnson on loan this week, but were turned down by wantaway Everton centre back Johnny Heitinga.
The Sunday Telegraph revealed the three-and-a-half-year deal that will take Lescott to Upton Park contains a wage of £90,000 per week for the rest of this season. Thereafter his pay packet will be £70,000 – whether West Ham stay up or not.

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 15 meetings with West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini’s team entertain the East Londoners at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Jack Collison scored a second half winner for the Hammers at Upton Park in March 2009, but that is the only victory they’ve recorded over City since back-to-back wins in 2006. Sam Allardyce remains short of striking options, so West Ham fans shall fondly remember Dean Ashton’s brace during an Fa Cup run to the final.
The Hammers are not much better off defensively either and come into this two-legged tie off the back of four defeats in their last five. Big Sam chose the Fa Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest to blood youngsters en masse – a move that resulted in a 5-0 thumping.

“We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club”
The letter went on to state:
“It is never enjoyable being knocked out of a cup competition and losing by such a large scoreline to a lower division side is hard to take for us all. We thought the youngsters gave their all and did not stop trying, but in the end Nottingham Forest’s experience proved too much for us. A topsy-turvy game at West Ham saw Sam Allardyce’s side lead 1-0 through Joe Cole only to go in behind at half time thanks to a Nicolas Anelka brace. Premier League strugglers West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion played on an enthralling rollercoaster 3-3 draw at Upton Park that left neutrals satisified, but neither side any better off.
Joe Cole opened the scoring for the hosts inside five minutes before a late first half brace from Nicolas Anelka put the Baggies ahead. Modibo Maiga and Hammers captain Kevin Nolan struck in quick succession to complete the turnaround after the break.
Saido Berahino rescued a point for West Brom, however, and it could have been more but for the goal frame. His late free kick rattled the woodwork, so both sides shared the spoils.
West Ham survived an early scare when Chris Brunt fired into the side-netting for Albion, and then went ahead in the fourth minute. Joe Cole profited from Diego Lugano’s defensive error after Carlton Cole won an aerial ball. Passes were exchanged...

Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League thanks to Theo Walcott’s second half double and a Lukas Podolski strike that downed London rivals West Ham United at Upton Park. The hosts had led through Carlton Cole.
Hammers midfielder Mark Noble was first to work Wojciech Szczesny in the visiting goal, forcing the Pole to palm away a free kick. This followed a start where the visiting defence had to deal with a flurry of crosses.

Sunderland look to win on the road this season at the eighth time of asking as they travel to East London to face fellow strugglers West Ham. Only a win will be good enough for the Black Cats if they want to avoid being the team sat bottom of the Premier League on Christmas Day, a position that has inevitably ended in relegation all but once in 21 seasons.
The Hammers could slip into the bottom three should they come away with anything other than 3 points, proving this is a must win game for both sides going into the busy Christmas period.

Premier League basement club Crystal Palace entertain West Ham United for the first time in the top flight for over 15 years on Tuesday.
The last five meetings between these two London clubs have come in the Championship with Palace winning the 2004 playoff final. Tony Pulis knows as he prepares for his Eagles home debut that his side have only ever won three league games against the Hammers.
Sam Allardyce’s West Ham are one of a clutch of sides hovering three points above the relegation zone. Victory in this capital city derby will take his team up to 11th place for time being.
It would be a precious time for Palace to pick up their third win of the campaign and move off the bottom. Their form, however, gives fans little festive cheer. The Hammers meanwhile ended a winless run stretching five matches with victory over Fulham at the weekend.

Carlton Cole scored on his return to the West Ham team as Sam Allardyce’s side picked up a priceless win over Fulham at Upton Park.
The striker scored from close range with 8 minutes to go to seal a 3-0 win, adding to Senegalese midfielder Mohamed Diame’s 20 yard deflected strike on 47 minutes and Joe Cole’s goal in the 88th minute.
West Ham started the match brightly with both Stewart Downing and Matt Jarvis whipping dangerous balls into the box minutes after kick-off.
Downing was causing Fulham all sorts of problems from out on the right winger, skipping past Kieran Richardson, forcing the left back to scythe him down and earn a yellow card.
From the resulting free kick West Ham struck the post, striker Modibo Maiga unluckily seeing his header denied by the woodwork.

Norwich and West Ham are struggling of late. The former are certainly in worse form, and manager Chris Hughton knows he’s running out of time to turn the club around before the board will consider relieving him of his duties. He’s not been helped by the lack of goals from his two summer signings Gary Hooper and Rocky Van Wolfswinkel, and hopes the former can finally kick-start his Norwich career this weekend.
Big Sam also has goal troubles with West Ham. The side are greatly paying the price for over-relying on Andy Carroll, who’s been out all season, without having a viable replacement. As a result, the Hammers have often named a starting XI without a recognised striker, or with midfielder Kevin Nolan pushed higher up the pitch. It’s a game that doesn’t promise many...

Newcastle United’s interest in West Ham defender James Tomkins could be over after being quoted a £6 million asking price, according to the Chronicle.
Sources claim that fee is too high a price to pay on a player who struggled with shin problems last season and who was limited to just 24 Premier League appearances, last appearing in the middle of April.
Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley is reportedly keen to invest the majority of the club’s transfer funds into a new centre-forward this summer, though Tomkins’ name was at the top of a list of targets handed to new director of football Joe Kinnear before he departed for a planned family vacation to Italy.
Ashley has received criticism from supporters recently over the appointment of the former Wimbledon boss, who also took charge at St James’ Park between 2008-09.

St Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has opened the door for a potential move to Newcastle United this summer, according to the Mirror.
The 24-year old says it is his dream to play in the Premier League and that the Magpies are “a good club”.
The in-demand Gabonese international has also attracted interest from Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, but is set to reject their overtures in favour of a move to England.
Aubameyang said:
“I will choose England before any other destination. My dream has always been to play in one of the top two leagues in the world.”
He also handed Newcastle a massive boost by adding:
“Newcastle is a good club and St James’ Park is a monumental stadium where there is passionate fans.”

Newcastle United have revived their interest in free agent Douglas, but face competition from Russia and Italy for his services according to The Journal.
The Magpies have been long-term admirers of the 25-year old defender, who is available for nothing after his contract with Fc Twente expired.
And that will provide manager Alan Pardew with encouragement that he can finally land the player, though there are other interested parties from the continent.
Italian side Lazio as well as Russian outfits Anzhi Makhachkala and Fk Krasnodar are understood to be in negotiations with the player’s agent as they hope to beat the Geordies to the punch in signing the defender.
Newcastle are however believed to have also made a bid for the Brazilian international that is in excess to those currently on the table, which could yet prove to hand them a distinct advantage in the race.
If their offer falls through though,...

This weekend has already seen some eye-catching and surprising results – West Brom’s win over Chelsea might have been a reward for form this season, but few would have bet on it, and Sunderland’s victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage came well out of the blue, considering their shyness in front of goal so far this term.
