Film to screen on June 5 in New York to commemorate Pride Month.
Brooklyn-based film and TV distributor FilmRise has acquired worldwide rights to Julie Sokolow’s documentary Woman On Fire.
The film premiered at the 2016 Doc NYC Film Festival and centres on Brooke Guinan, New York City’s first openly transgender firefighter.
Guinan’s father and grandfather served as New York firefighters, yet she experiences obstacles in her career in what remains a male-dominated profession.
Woman On Fire will screen to the public on June 5 at Bam Rose Cinemas in partnership with Brooklyn Pride. Guinan will be honoured as a Grand Marshal at this year’s Lgbt Pride March in New York on June 25.
Danny Yourd produced the documentary and Michael Killen, Kathy Dziubek, and Jim Kreitzburg of production company Animal Inc served as executive producers.

PBS has acquired the U.S. broadcast rights to the documentary “Unrest,” which premiered in the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Documentary Competition section. The film won the festival’s U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing.

Sara Hirsh Bordo’s film charts the life of Velasquez, a 26-year-old born with a disease that stops her gaining weight who defied cyber bullying to become a human rights activist.
A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story will get a theatrical release in October followed by ancillary platforms and a presentation on Cinedigm’s Docurama digital network in early 2016.
“Cinedigm is building a legacy around supporting important films with extraordinary heroes,” said Bordo, who founded the production company Women Rising.

UK sales outfit Kaleidoscope has picked up documentary I Am Big Bird, the story of Caroll Spinney, the man who has played Sesame Street’s Big Bird since 1969.
The deal covers worldwide distribution of all rights, excluding North America.

The film has played at a number of festivals including Hot Docs, AFI Docs and Docnyc.

Mongrel Media has acquired Canadian rights to Steve Hoover’s Sundance 2013 Us Documentary Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner Blood Brother.
The film will go out on digital and DVD through Cinedigm and Itvs has acquired broadcast rights for Independent Lens.
Proceeds from the film have been designated to support the work of the orphanage in Tamil Nadu as seen in the film.
Blood Brother centres on an American graphic designer who stumbled upon an HIV orphanage in India and left all that he had to work with the children.
All distribution deals were negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by
