Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue
Starring Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Pavan Malhotra
Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai
At last, a biopic about a true hero. If you are as tired of watching gangsters being glorified on screen as I am, then here is a welcome break. Mission Raniganj(the appendage in the title about ‘Great Bharat’ seems an afterthought) pushes the timeline back to 1989 when at the Raniganj coalfield in West Bengal, a Sikh mining officer Jaswant Singh Gill rescued sixty-five miners after a mining accident.
Like the 2015 Spanish film The 33 which vividly recreated the real events of the 2010 Copiapó mining disaster, in which a group of thirty-three miners were trapped inside the San José Mine in Chile for sixty-nine days, Mission Raniganj strives to bring the palpable immediacy of the disaster to us.
If you have seen Tinu Desai’s earlier Akshay starrer Rustom you would would...

Ram Setu
Written & Directed by Abhishek Sharma
Ram Setu tries really hard to be politically correct. It is a product soaked, no dyed in saffron.
I don’t know what the original colour of the plot was. Certainly not green. But perhaps initially they wanted to make film tinged in saffron rather than drowned in the preferred colour. What we finally get is Akshay Kumar as an archeologist whom we first meet in Afghanistan. It is the kind of overpunctuated underlined prologue, which even James Bond would find exhausting, so who are we to live through it?
Live, we do. There is so much more to come. A lot of it plainly ridiculous. At some point the plot inexplicably moves to Sri Lanka because that is where Raavan apparently lived(whether the geographical Sri Lanka is actually the Lanka referred to in the Ramayan is a debatable point). And if...

In 2015’s surprisingly poignant “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” filmmaker Kabir Khan had even the most dogged of Salman Khan’s skeptics reaching for tissues, giving him the reputation as the one writer-director who could at last bring out a certain depth in the actor that, frankly, many of us didn’t think was there. So when “Tubelight” was announced as the duo’s next release, much of the excitement was rooted in the hopes of another winning collaboration.
“Bajrangi” and “Tubelight” have lots in common: Salman in the lead as a man-child with a golden heart. The lessons of loving thy neighbor and never giving up hope. An impossibly adorable child as Salman’s sidekick, pivotal to selling us on those messages. But where “Bajrangi” effectively harnessed the actor’s mega-star persona into a simple character that still — in true Salman tradition — had a significant moral undertone, “Tubelight” struggles to strike that balance,...

Eid isn’t Eid if you don’t have a Salman Khan film to gush over. Since back in 2009, it is fully accepted in the industry that Salman owns Eid. Indian and world audiences have loved him over and again. Whether it was the remake of a Telugu film Pokiri in Wanted, the romantic spy action of Ek Tha Tiger or the cross-border comedy that was Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman has firmly settled himself as the man for Eid in Bollywood. Last year was no different with the blockbuster Sultan. From all indications however, this year will be different. Even though Kabir Khan is helming the megaphone again, this film is different to anything that has come before from Salman or Bollywood. For the first time, we are going to look at war from the perspective of the soldiers’ families.
“Kya tumhe yakeen hai?” From the poster, we have the immediate feel of change.

Tubelight
Starring Salman Khan, Sohail Khan,Matin Rey Tangu, Zhu Zhu, Om Puri
Directed by Kabir Khan
Faith, they say, can move mountains. The hero of Kabir Khan’s latest and his most ….ummm….noble (if one can use that word without cynicism) film to date actually thinks he can move a mountain by just focusing hard on getting it right.
Tubelight is not a film for the cynics. But if you can toss aside your reservations about a world steeped in arcadian innocence and accept humanism rather than hedonism as a way of living, you can actually savour the supple undulating rhythms of Kabir Khan’s storytelling without questioning his right to create a world so far removed from practical stressful concerns while addressing a theme as grim as war and its ravages.

A pacy grace envelopes Kabir Khan’s new political thriller. You can almost smell the tension in the air. If Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a agreeable gentle cup of lemon tea Phantom is a the bracing percolating morning cup of coffee that makes you jump out of your bed and seize the day.
Kabir’s second film in six weeks after the epic success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan takes an aggressive what-if stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. It does so with a cool candour that makes for a bracing jolting wake-up call for the two nations at a proxy war rattling sabres across the barbed fence.
Phantom works on a simple premise. You give us 26/11. We take revenge. As simple as that. In many ways the very talented Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub playing a raw Raw agent (no, I am not stammering) represents the voice of the nation. His inexperience among veterans who plot...

These days we see realism being taken to the next level in films, and not the ones to lag behind, the makers of the upcoming film Gunday will be erecting a massive set to achieve this precision. In fact there is a huge coal mine set being recreated for the next schedule of Yrf's Gunday which is being touted to be the first of its kind. Interestingly, the last Yrf film shot in a coal mine was Yash Chopra's Kaala Patthar in 1979 which had a Hollywood team specially flown in to be on board to supervise the technicality of shooting this on location. For Gunday, what proved invaluable were the discussions between late Mr. Yash Chopra and the director of the film Ali Abbas Zafar before the start of the film in August 2012. Yash ji shared all his experiences of shooting the coal mine sequences of Kala Patthar with Ali,...

From the skyscrapers in New York to the ravines of Chambal in Paan Singh Tomar, cinematographer Aseem Mishra’s body of work is diverse. Aseem, who holds the distinction of shooting the first Hindi film on Arri Alexa feels nostalgic about the good old celluloid but believes that the future is going to be digital. Bikas Mishra talks to Aseem Mishra:
Irrfan (L), Aseem Mishra (R)
Paan Singh Tomar is being hailed for its cinematography. Can you share your experience of shooting the film in Chambal valley?
Not just for cinematography but also as a complete film! When I look back, I had shot it just after shooting New York. So for me it was an interesting change. I took it more as an experiment! From shooting reflections and skyscrapers to shooting ravines of Chambal, going from cool tones to warm tones. It was a very interesting experience. Magic realism at its best!

Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia, Actors: Irrfan Khan, Mahie Gill
Having read the immensely gripping screenplay of “Paan Singh Tomar” couple of years back, I was amused at Utv Motion Picture’s decision to hold the release of the film for two years, fearing that urban multiplex-going audiences won’t get the dialect of the film. Well, apart from many other triumphs, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s biopic of the immensely colourful athlete-turned Chambal dacoit proves yet again that cinema is a language unto itself.
Tigmanshu’s Paan Singh Tomar, brought to life by a stellar performance by Irrfan Khan, is an ordinary peasant to begin with, who becomes an athlete out of no glorious ambition but to simply quell his hunger! Irrfan enlivens the screen with the earthliness of this endearing man, whose naivete is disarming. In one of the scenes when an army officer questions him, “Have you ever been arrested”, he replies instantly,...

Adopting an ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach, the hit trio of Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh and director Maneesh Sharma, reunite to deliver the follow-up to Band Baaja Baaraat. Arriving exactly a year after their surprise blockbuster, to say expectations are high for Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, would be an understatement.
Add to this, the fact that producer Aditya Chopra is involved and this is a Yash Raj Films project, and you can see that the said ladies and Ricky have their work cut out in meeting the demands of the audience.
Will the ‘rom-con’ match the earlier success of Bbb? Does Ranveer justify the hype of being the next big thing? Can the lead pair recreate the scorching celluloid electricity from their previous outing?
The film kicks off in Delhi. Con number one sees gym instructor Sunny (Ranveer) in outfits even Salman Khan would reject as tasteless,...
