Houston passes anti-discrimination ordinance, Nom gets fined in Maine, Phineas & Ferb combine Star Wars with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
LeVar Burton launched a Kickstarter to bring back the Reading Rainbow on the web, including a version for schools. His $1 million goal was reached in less than 24 hours, and the ability to pledge is open until July.
Houston has passed their sweeping non-discrimination ordinance after nine hours of debate. The Hero law passed 11-6 and protects sexual orientation and gender identity but also, as federal laws do, sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion, disability, pregnancy and genetic information, as well as family, marital or military status.
In a surprise move, Justice Kennedy has asked the litigants in Oregon for briefs in the attempt by the National Organization for Marriage to stop equality in the state. Kennedy could dismiss himself or refer the issue to the full court. I...

The Beverly Hills Hotel is the subject of a boycott by an Lgbt advocacy group over an anti-gay policy instituted by the owner of the hotel chain, the Sultan of Brunei. The Gill Action Fund -- a national political organization founded by entrepreneur and activist Tim Gill -- was scheduled to hold a conference for political donors at the Beverly Hills Hotel on May 1-4, according to The Washington Blade. (A spokesperson for the Beverly Hills Hotel declined to comment on the the details of the conference.) The executive director of the fund, Kirk Fordham, disclosed to the Blade that it

General Hospital quietly introduced Felix Dubois, an out nursing student played by Marc Anthony Samuel this week. He's a contract player, so he will be back, but his initial reviews are mixed. His first showing had him going in for a makeover of another character, which has some screaming "stereotype" and others saying that there are enough gay characters on television now to embrace all types. Personally, I think we should get to know him before we make any decisions.
Time has run a feature story on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, with some amazing words from his gay brother, Michael. It seems in high school, Roger dedicated a lot of his time to defending his brother from bullies, including beating up kids who picked on him. And that carried over into college as well, when he visited a bar where Michael worked. “'There were these two twins, they were body-builder twins,...

Morning Meme: "The Three Little Pigs" Go On Trial, Brad Pitt Joins "8," and The Muppets Get a Sequel
Stargate's Michael Shanks returns to my television screen this summer in Canadian soap Saving Hope, in which the sexy man will star as a brilliant doctor in a coma, haunting his own hospital while his fiancée played by Smallville's Erica Durance tries to save him.
The Indiana House has backed away from plans to restrict specialty license plates, which many saw as targeting the plate for the gay Indiana Youth Group. Citing how volatile the debate had gotten, sponsor Ed Soliday withdrew the bill.
In a move so savvy it might almost qualify as cynical, Tim Gill has appointed Republican Kirk Fordham to lead his Action Fund.
An Oxford grad has returned his English degree to Exeter over their decision to rent space to the anti-gay Christian Concern conference. I'm assuming this is symbolic, since it doesn't affect his record or references.
The Muppets will be getting a sequel,...

Sir Ian McKellen is my hero. Speaking about homophobia to school children in conjunction with Stonewall, he says he’s doing it because “By talking frankly about my own life as a gay man and listening to the concerns of staff and students, parents and governors, I hope the visits arranged by Stonewall may make a difference in the classroom and the playground.”
Ft. Worth Councilman Joel Burns is a finalist for Texan of the Year. If a gay man wins this award, you can find me skiing at my chalet in hell.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced, and I really don’t care. Donna Summer didn’t make it. And Neil Diamond did. Not that either of those two have anything to do with rock and roll.
Ordinarily, I wouldn’t even pick up a book titled Being Gay is Disgusting or God...

Q: Recently, I've been reading about the movie Role/Play starring real-life boyfriends Matthew Montgomery and Steve Callahan and it got me thinking about gay-themed movies in which the gay leads, romantic or otherwise, are portrayed by openly gay actors. So far I've come up with seven other movies: Adam & Steve, Back Soon, Eating Out 3, A Four Letter Word, Long Term Relationship, Save Me, and Shortbus. Are there any others out there? -- Aaron, Chicago
A: There are surprisingly few.
Generally speaking, the lower the budget, the more likely the actors are to be gay and out. Why? Well, not to be unkind to some very talented indie actors,...

Plus, it's a big day for birthdays, Kelly Cutrone is impatient, American Top Gear ready to roll, Alex O'Laughlin's ... talents, and Neil Patrick Harris' Beastly quips.
On the off chance that anyone at Cartoon Network reads anything I write, I want to go on record as opposing their upcoming programming choices. Not only are you putting live-action programming on something called “Cartoon Network” you also bust out this sentence, which is as close to blasphemy as you can get: “The network also announced that coming later in the year would be an all-new re-imagined version of the Warner Bros animated classic shorts, Looney Tunes.”
Also departing from the title of their network, History Channel is set to premiere their version of Top Gear with Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood.
