Jerry Leshay

Composer/director Jerome "Jerry" Leshay was born in New York on February 28, 1926 and was educated at NYU, earning a BA degree. He studied music with Sam Saxe and served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, later directing and producing a variety of drama, musical and comedy shows. He won a Directors Guild Award for 1970's "A Storm in Summer" drama special starring Peter Ustinov, produced the musical special "Let There Be Love" for Yorkshire Television in England, and spent ten years as a director at NBC while teaching directing workshops at Columbia College and Cal State University. Joining ASCAP in 1957, he composed dozens of melodies in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Bobby Troup, with the latter in collaboration to write the title track to Julie London's album, "Nice Girls Don't Stay for Breakfast". Jazz guitarist Joe Pass recorded his melody "The Sands of Time." His other compositions include "When You Love" and "Bonjour La Vie". Jerry Leshay died at age 79 on December 8, 2005.
