Exclusive: Metrograph Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to The Black Sea, the offbeat comedy from Crystal Moselle and Derrick B. Harden which debuted at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Metrograph will release the pic theatrically later this year.
Inspired by Harden’s travels to Bulgaria, and improvised by Harden and its Bulgarian cast, The Black Sea traces the journey of a charismatic dreamer from Brooklyn who inadvertently ends up as the only Black person in a small town on the Black Sea in Eastern Europe. While initially, all he wants is to get home, he becomes increasingly drawn to the unorthodox characters and unexpected connections he finds.
UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. The film was produced by Izabella Tzenkova, Kotva Films, and GiveThanks. Executive producers include Andrea Leibof, Cameron Brody, Dana Høegh, Jonas Carpignano, Josh Peters, Robina Riccitiello, Ted Hope, and Ted Wright.

Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

Arriving in theaters and on VOD and digital platforms this Friday is writer/director Henry Dunham’s taut and tension-filled thriller The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. Starring James Badge Dale, Brian Geraghty, Chris Mulkey, Gene Jones, Happy Anderson, Patrick Fischler, and Robert Aramayo, Dunham’s debut feature follows an ex-cop named Gannon (Dale), who joined a militia group after he gave up his career. Eager to put his law enforcement days behind him, Gannon is tasked with figuring out which one of his fellow militia members are behind a shooting at a police funeral once it’s discovered that one of the men might have motives bigger than minding the interests of their controversial group.

Two years ago, Nathan Fillion expressed his concern on Good Morning America that bringing Castle and Beckett together was a mistake: "You know what my personal view is, if they get together… I am old enough to remember Moonlighting. The 'Moonlighting curse.' I aim for a long, long Castle run.”
Ah, yes. The Moonlighting curse. The assumption that despite the fact that most television viewers marry, pinning our hopes on happily ever after, the last thing we actually want to see is what happens after that wedding day. DNA's a funny thing. We got the hint from his appearance last season, but this week's episode of Castle, "Deep Cover," proves once and for all that Jackson Hunt lives absolutely everything that Castle has been writing about for years. He even talks like he's in a cheesy spy novel. I'm pretty sure passing down supermarket literature cliches is not how genetics actually works, but whatever.

Daddy's home! James Brolin is set to make his grand return to Castle in tonight's episode of the ABC hit drama, but it's not exactly going to be a happy reunion. When a young video store clerk is murdered and his hacker history is revealed, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett's (Stana Katic) investigation leads them to, you guessed it, Castle's father, Jackson Hunt (Brolin)! And in an exclusive sneak peek from tonight's outing, "Deep Cover," Kate comes face-to-face with her soon-to-be father-in-law, she just doesn't know it...and Castle doesn't want her to. Can you say awkward?! Seriously, how uncomfortable is Castle throughout Beckett's questioning...

James Brolin reprises his role as Richard Castle's long-absent father, C.I.A. operative Jackson Hunt, on the Jan. 13 episode of ABC's Castle (10/9c). And during this visit, he meets his son's fiancé, Kate (Stana Katic), and reunites with Castle's mother, Martha (Susan Sullivan), for the first time since Castle's (Nathan Fillion) conception. If Jackson seems a bit darker and more mysterious this time around, there's good reason: That's just how Brolin demanded it.

There’s something special about family reunions, even when they aren’t exactly relationships that are built on strong foundations. Take Rick Castle and his father for example. There isn’t much that is known about Jackson Hunt other than he’s a ruthless assassin for the CIA and he’s been checking in on his wife, son and granddaughter all their lives. But perhaps there will be more to discover should Hunt resurface, which, as it so happens, is exactly what’s going to happen. But don’t expect to learn anything good about Hunt; if anything, Brolin’s willingness to return to Castle goes to show we’re going to be seeing a much darker side to this character.

In one of those odd coincidences that happen occasionally on television, two vastly different shows -- "Castle" and "Community" -- both cast James Brolin in the role of an absent father.
The question is, to which of the shows did Brolin bring better daddy issues?
Brolin on "Castle"
The James Brolin papa-train rolled into "Castle" first. In a two-part episode in which Castle's daughter, Alexis (Molly Quinn), was kidnapped and spirited off to Paris, Brolin appeared as the mysterious and deadly Jackson Hunt. It was quickly revealed that Hunt was in fact Castle's (Nathan Fillion) previously unknown father. Also, he was a gun-toting intelligence asset.
We only got to see this version of Brolin for a short time -- a siege on the bad guy's mansion left Hunt's fate ambiguous -- but there was a little time for father-son bonding. As it turned out, Hunt was the one...

The hunt to save his daughter Alexis consumed Richard Castle on the latest episode of "Castle." In the process, he came face-to-face with a stranger named Jackson Hunt -- played by James Brolin -- who was unusually eager to help. When he revealed the reason why, he rocked Castle's world to the core.
It was revealed that Alexis was kidnapped as revenge on Jackson Hunt, which raised even more questions. Questions Castle demanded answers for.
"Somehow he found out who she was, who you were. And he knew I’d come for her," Hunt told him.
"Why?" Castle needed to know. "Why would you come for her?”
"Because she’s my granddaughter," Hunt said. "Richard, I’m your father."
That's right. After five years of "Castle," Rick came face to face with his father. The two even worked together to rescue Alexis, but it wasn't a completely happy ending.

Only on a show like "Castle" would parental love be expressed via a high body count.
But it was love that motivated the rescue of Alexis (Molly Quinn) in "Hunt," the second episode of this two-part story of kidnapping and long-lost family. In the end, the day was saved, and Castle (Nathan Fillion) even got an odd but touching reunion with the father he never knew he had.
In case you forgot
The first part of this story focused on the kidnapping of Alexis and her college friend, Sara El-Masri. Since Sara's parents were rich and powerful Egyptians with lots of enemies, it was assumed that Alexis was taken solely out of convenience.
From here, things got weird quickly. The girls weren't where the FBI expected them to be. The initial kidnapper turned up tortured. Alexis tried to escape, only to find herself on a Paris rooftop.

What a great hour of television!
For a show that usually treats us to light-hearted laughter and absurd cases, Castle can do drama and it can do it well. The series aired the second half of the annual two-parter tonight and “Hunt” can easily be described as epic. Quite possibly, the best two-parter in the show’s history. So let’s get to it.
The hour picked up right where we had left off: Alexis is in Paris, the team is doing everything it can to find her and Rick is wasting no more time. he hops a plane to France to find his daughter himself.
Shady Characters. Castle meets up with an administrative advisor who he had worked with on his Derek Storm novels. He hooks him up with man who tracks down where Alexis was when she made the phone call. A meet is set up and he turns on Castle.

Fans of old-school grind-house films may find interest in this short. The film is directed by Greg Hanson, an underground/genre filmmaker based in New York who produced Beneath Contempt, which was a hit at this past year’s Slamdance. There is a lot to like in this short, so I do recommend checking it out.
