In the near future a company specialising in cellular meat trial its synthetic technology in a bid to create the perfect child. Nicholas (Johnny Vivash) and Sarah (Kathryn Louise) are guinea pigs to this trial and are provided with a seemingly healthy son, after losing their own child to a genetic disease. As their new son, Isaac, develops he becomes increasingly violent and dangerous, leaving the parents with no choice but to lock him away and keep him hidden while they try to uncover the truth as to what is driving him insane.
Essentially a Frankenstein tale, with genetic modification at its core, Isaac is remarkable in that we don’t really see the titular character. Instead, the film follows Isaac’s parents as the joy of becoming parents for the second time, following the...

Folie à Deux (Madness by Two)
Folie à Deux is a neo-noir short film that aims to open up a discussion about men’s mental health. In this film, we follow Oliver, an overworked chef who turns to drugs and alcohol and drags his girlfriend Isabel down with him, turning a loving relationship into one of control and abuse. The short – which is a proof of concept for a feature film – comes from writer/director Naveed Mir and stars Alan Cooper, who was the lead actor in the feature film Claudia.

Well that’s it! We can officially close the book on my number one movie of 2023 because I finally got to see How to Kill Monsters and it’s an absolute belter.
Admittedly I was an adoring fan of Book of Monsters and I do think Lyndsey Craine is a bonafide yet hugely underrated superstar scream queen female lead. Then you throw in a smorgasbord of who’s who in the genre and a metric ton of gore, blood and guts. Safe to say I have been excited for this practical effects-driven low-budget Lovecraftian horror, sci-fi, comedy from director Stewart Sparke and his team at Dark Rift Horror.
How to Kill Monsters starts much the same as many other movies of its ilk… at the end…...

Children of the Night (no relation to the Tony Randel-directed film from 1991) is a first for Charlie Steeds’ company Dark Temple Motion Pictures. Where their previous films such as Freeze and The Barge People have all been Steeds’ own productions, this time they served as producers for the debut feature from writer/director William Stead. Regular readers know I’m a fan of Steed’s films, so of course I was curious to see if his talents extended to producing other filmmakers’ work.
During World War II a German attack on an English position leaves two survivors, Jim and Robert wandering the French countryside trying to reach Normandy.

Out now on VOD is Walking Against the Rain, the debut feature of director Scott Lyus that brings apocalyptic creature feature mayhem in the form of full-body practical creature effects.
Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive clip that introduces Tommy (Reece Douglas) as he attempts to make first contact with Blair (Sophia Eleni), but he’ll have to survive an attack from one of the film’s brand new monster creations, The Forsaken, first.
The monstrous Forsaken are brought to life via full-body practical creature effects from BIFA-winning FX designer Dan Martin (Infinity Pool).
Walking Against the Rain follows “the story of Blair and Tommy, two strangers who traverse an empty landscape in search of each other, relying only on their two soon-to-die battery-operated radio mics for communication. As they try to evade a new evil monster, they confront loss and grief and learn to trust humanity once again.”

Freeze, the new film from writer/director Charlie Steeds tells of the good ship Innsmouth, it’s Captain Mortimer and a crew that includes first mate McCullough, Charles Redgrave an artist there to document the voyage, Lieutenant Roth, and Seaman Spriggs. Also, unbeknownst to the crew there’s Carmen (Beatrice Barrilà; Invisible – Chapter I) a stowaway with an agenda of her own. They’ve been sent to find out what happened to the expedition led by Mortimer’s friend Sir William Streiner which ventured into the frozen north and never returned. Unfortunately the Innsmouth becomes trapped in the ice and its crew face the same fate as those they were supposed to rescue.

Headed our way this winter is the next horror movie from director Charlie Steeds (The Barge People), the Lovecraftian creature feature Freeze from Dark Temple Motion Pictures.
The arctic horror movie won the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival’s Best Film Award 2022, which gives it some legit Lovecraft cred. You can watch the official trailer for Freeze below.
“On a rescue mission to the North Pole to retrieve an old friend and his lost expedition crew, Captain Mortimer gets more than he bargained for when his ship is frozen into the ice sheet and set upon by bloodthirsty fish-creatures. Mortimer and his surviving crew flee the ship, beginning a treacherous journey to find safety in a frozen desolate wilderness.
“Suffering from starvation, frostbite and a slow madness, they find shelter inside a snowy mountain, but are they as safe as they think, or have they entered the heart of the creatures lair.

Writer-director Scott Lyus made something of an impact on the film festival circuit with his short film Black Mass and now he’s back with his first feature, Walking Against the Rain, which explores a familiar post-apocalyptic theme but puts a wonderfully different spin on things!
The film follows two strangers, Blair and Tommy are navigating their way across a barren landscape in a desperate attempt to find each other. With their only form of communication being two soon-to-die battery-operated radio microphones and with a new evil in the shape of ‘The Forsaken’ tracking them down, they must not only make their way to a rendezvous point but also merely survive.
By now there’s no one out there who doesn’t have experience in watching post-apocalyptic movies, and probably are familiar with the nihilistic,...

Starting with a stabbing and quite a bit of artistic flare, Lie Low‘s story immediately join an English family as they flee an awful event to “lie low” (as the title suggests). We travel from the grim night of a terrible crime in urban Gillingham, to the beautiful Morning Countryside of France, where a couple of the family members are already living. The contrast is striking as our fish out of water characters struggle to make the transition. Early on, we can discern that trust within the family is in short supply and there are secrets to slowly unpick. The TV doesn’t work and as our family have fled, they have brought little to...

There is something uniquely American in the unashamed virtues and patriotism wrapped up in traditional Superhero films. It is this un-ironic earnestness that I admire but find impossible to emulate personally. Superman, with his endlessly positivity is too vanilla for me. Probably more importantly I am, deep down too sneering, too cynical to fully embrace or relate to the struggles of the invincible man with the shopping list of powers.
Speaking of heroes… lots of people like to root for John McClane in the original Die Hard as the consummate underdog. Even watching as a kid, I rooted for the actual underdogs of the movie,...

"What the hell is Rendel?" The first official trailer has arrived online for a Finnish, futuristic superhero film titled Rendel, which is the name of the masked superhero character that it's about. Created by the film's director, Jesse Haaja, Rendel is a "faceless" superhero fighting against the Vala criminal organization in the "cold dystopia" of a fictionalized version of a Finnish city called Mikkeli. This "superhero story" is a bit darker and grittier than what we see out of Hollywood, but still has some of the same tropes of the genre. Starring Finnish actor Kristofer Gummerus as Rendel, along with Matti Onnismaa, Minttu Tamski, Roosa-Maria Makinen, Alina Tomnikov, Bianca Bradey, and Johnny Vivash. This looks it could be cool, but I'm also a bit worried it might also be straight-to-vhs level terrible. Check out the footage below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jesse Haaja's Rendel, direct from...
