Anthony Bourdain helped me get over my feelings of “imposter syndrome” in the early days of “Top Chef.”
When the show started in 2006, I was surrounded by top-tier professional chefs. I had already published a book about food, had another coming out and had done a cooking show and a couple “Planet Food” documentaries for Food Network, but I still felt people thought I was just a model and what did I know about food? I hadn’t been to culinary school. I have never worked the line in a kitchen.
Through our friendship, Tony taught me to feel pride in my own view of the world. We both relished travel and were transformed by it. He cared about me and my history and how that related to food. He was interested in everyone’s opinion. He taught me that no person’s opinion about food was too small to matter.

May 2015 Wine of The Month: Fabio Viviani Excels In Vino Too.You cannot help but fall in love with the affable, self-deprecating Chef Fabio Viviani, who came here with a focused vision, insane work ethic and virtually no English to communicate. It’s almost hard to imagine that Top Chef is still on the air but even in its twelfth season, it’s as delicious as ever. The Bravo series, which has taken the chefs (and viewers) from New York to New Orleans, is now calling Boston home as it puts a new group of contestants to the test in what looks to be the series’ toughest season yet. Gail Simmons, who has served as a judge since the show premiered in 2006, is still amazed by the enormity of what the franchise become. “If you would have told me then that I would still be making the show and still be in this role, I would never have believed you,” Simmons says. “We’re still making great food television and eating really delicious food.”

TV on Tap: “The Mindy Project” Gets James Franco and “Futurama” Turns into Saturday Morning Cartoons
News
Keith Olbermann is returning to television, the New York Times reports. He’ll be getting his own show on ESPN2, where his beat will include pop culture and current events but not politics.
It turns out American Dad will be wrapping up its run at Fox as its tenth season will be the animated comedy’s final season on broadcast TV. It’s not the last fans will see Stan, Francine and Roger, TBS will air the eleventh season.
When The Mindy Project returns, James Franco will join the show for a two-episode arc as a model-turned doctor who takes over Mindy‘s workload while she’s away.
A fan favorite is returning to Supernatural. I’ll let you decide if you want to click on the link and find out who or just spend the next few months avoiding spoilers.
Showtime has already ordered a second season of Ray Donovan.

How should Glee handle the death of star Cory Monteith? Vulture argues the show should turn the tragedy into an examination of grief. The kids of Glee have dealth with death before, but when you’re young, losing someone your age is a very different shock to take.
In an interview with Whodunnit producer Anthony E. Zuiker, Zuiker explains some behind-the-scenes details like why the exams that determines who gets eliminated aren’t shown on the show, why we’re now seeing an interview with the eliminated “corpse” and whether all the personal drama and hoarding of information was planned.
There is a stage opera set to open in London about Big Brother UK contestant Jade Goody. and the Crowd (wept) follows the woman who made racist remarks on Celebrity Big Brother that became an international firestorm, only to capture the attention of tabloids again when she died of cancer two years later.

San Francisco -- What happens when you ask a group of food world luminaries to come up with their picks for Best Food Scene in a movie?
You get some unexpected responses. Who knew "Pulp Fiction" was such a foodie flick? You pick up a few tips, like the "Goodfellas" guide to truly razor-thin garlic.
And there will be bacon.
Here are some of the nominations for Oscar-worthy examples of screen cuisine, along with a trio of cocktail recipes to help you toast this year's winners on Feb. 24 in those other categories, like Best Picture.
Fabio Viviani, "Top Chef" Season 5 "Fan Favorite" and host of Yahoo's Chow Ciao, took a practical approach for his choice, opting for the "Goodfellas" scene that shows Paulie slicing garlic with a razor. "What a way to get the perfect thin garlic! You can almost smell the garlic and tomatoes and meat cooking in the scene.

Top Chef is currently cooking in rainy Seattle, but I'd like to offer some sunnier vistas: the ten hottest contestants in Top Chef history. We'll have to save our Tom Colicchio/Rocco Dispirito lust for another post.
In the meantime, take a look at these ten hotties, glare ominously into their eyes like an intrigued Padma Lakshmi, and fight with me in the comments about who should be ranked higher/lower/not at all.
10. Chris Crary (season nine)
You're working with some kind of charm when you can place ninth and still garner the Fan Favorite award, and as you can see, Chris Crary of Top Chef: Texas was working with some fine pectoral charms. Too bad my vision of that season is tainted by weird, vaguely mean-seeming guest judge Pee Wee Herman.
9. Hung Hunyh (season three)

Er. Wow. You know Jeremy Davies' odd haircut at the Emmys? The one we thought was an expression of his character's strangeness until he stepped onto the Emmy stage? It turns out he showed up on the set of Justified with that haircut and they decided to use it.
While I agree the characters on Happy Endings are pretty terrible people, that makes senes if you don't think of it as a Friends clone but rather as the successor to Seinfeld. Bad as the He gang might be,...

Even if someone has won "Top Chef," that doesn't necessarily mean his journey with the show is over.
Richard Blais finished Season 4 of the Bravo competition as the runner-up, then came back to win Season 8, dubbed "Top Chef: All-Stars." "One of the biggest things I realized was that I just had to let it play out as it played out," Blais tells Zap2it. "If you try to manipulate a situation, it doesn't work. You can't really act your way through real life, and restaurants aren't perfect, and family life isn't perfect ... but you manage and you get through it as a team, and I think that's what the show displays."

In the weeks between the end of "Top Chef Masters" and the beginning of "Top Chef: Seattle," Bravo is keeping the franchise alive with a new competition-free series "Life After Top Chef."
Instead of pitting chefs against each other in quickfire challenges, the show follows four former cheftestants -- "Top Chef: All Stars" winner Richard Blais in Atlanta, Season 6's Jen Carroll in Philadelphia, Season 4's Spike Mendelsohn in D.C. and Season 5's Fabio Viviani in Los Angeles -- in their professional and personal lives.
The series premiere was a mostly genial affair, there's no "Jersey Shore" antics or "Real World" bickering here, that relied heavily on the likable personalities of its familiar faces. But is that enough to support a weekly series? Even in a limited five episode run.
What did you think of the premiere of "Life After Top Chef" and will you be back next week?...

And the first new shows to get a full-season are on NBC. The network gave a "back nine" order to Revolution, Go On and The New Normal. All three shows have done pretty well so far and Revolution's second and third week suggests it has a chance at avoiding the fate of shows like The Event and Terra Nova, which started strong but kept losing viewers. Now the TV nerds are waiting to see if CBS or Fox makes the first cancellation of the season. (I predicted The Mob Doctor would be the first to fall, but I didn't expect the viewers who made 2 Broke Girls a hit would reject the equally-unfunny Partners.)
Patton Oswalt will join the fourth season of Justified in a recurring role. He'll play a classmate of Raylan who has that one story of football glory that he tells again and again.

Ever want to set sail with some of the best chef-testants from Bravo's "Top Chef"? We can't say the idea has ever occurred to us, but it sounds like fun.

They'll join "Top Chef" hosts Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, along with 11 more alums.
Among the highlights scheduled for the cruise: behind-the-scenes kitchen tours, the opportunity to participate in live Quickfire challenges, a Q&A session with the chef-lebrities and (what sounds like the standout to us) an evening dance party hosted by DJ and Top Chef Master Hubert Keller. Tom Colicchio and Carla Hall sat in the hot seats to play "Plead The Fifth" on "Watch What Happens Live" (Weeknights, 11 p.m. Est on Bravo), and host Andy Cohen did his best to cook up a whole mess of trouble for them.
Former model and "Top Chef" fan favorite Carla now hosts daytime food and talk-fest "The Chew" (a.k.a., "The Soap Killer") on ABC. When Cohen asked her which of her co-hosts she was already tired of, she was suitably diplomatic.
"None of them! I love them all!"
When it was Tom's turn Cohen asked, "which former 'Top Chef' Cheftestant would you not mind hooking up with?" An obvious candidate for pleading the fifth, right? But no: Tom actually answered the question.
Unlike Fabio Viviani, who picked the "smoking" Jen Carroll, Tom chose Camille.

"Top Chef" alum Gail Simmons and Fabio Viviani played "Plead the Fifth" on "Watch What Happens Live" (Weeknights., 11 p.m. Est on Bravo) Wednesday night and gave some surprisingly candid answers to host Andy Cohen's questions.
When Cohen asked Simmons, the host of "Top Chef: Just Desserts," who the most overrated celebrity chef is right now, she grimaced and said "Oh, I hate that question," before dropping a bombshell: "I guess I have to say Paula Deen."
Deen has attracted a barrage of criticism since she announced that she has Type 2 diabetes and is promoting a Novo diabetes drug.
In a less controversial, but equally honest "Plead the Fifth" moment, Cohen asked "Top Chef" fan favorite Fabio which judge's opinion he cared least about, he picked frequent guest judge Anthony Bourdain.
He and Bourdain got into it after the "Layover" host was rude about one of Fabio's dishes. Bourdain later apologized for upsetting Fabio,...

Feisty cheftestant Grayson went head-to-head with "Top Chef: Texas" (Wed., 10 p.m. Est on Bravo) head judge Tom Colicchio over her decision to serve chicken salad.
Tasked in the Elimination Challenge with creating a dish for 200 guests at a block party, Grayson came up an "elevated" chicken salad sandwich, and Colicchio just couldn't believe it.
With a prize of $15,000 at stake he questioned the wisdom of choosing such a safe option, and asked if she really thought she could win with it. Standing her ground, Grayson asked, "You think that a chicken salad sandwich is really boring?"
To which he replied, "you have to win this against dishes that are potentially much more exciting than a chicken salad sandwich."
Grayson quipped, "Like a meatball?" Colicchio couldn't help but laugh when she derided her fellow cheftestants' decisions to cook meatballs and "Asian food" for the party.
Backing up her decision, Grayson...

Fabio Viviani fielded his share of TV show pitches the last few years — including one with Bravo that never came to fruition — but the endlessly quotable Top Chef alum finally joined forces with Yahoo!, not a network, to launch his Italian-cooking series Chow Ciao. "[With the previous TV pitches] I was kind of put on the spot for doing content for the network rather than be myself," Viviani tells TVGuide.com. "Once Yahoo! approached me, they just asked me to be me." The 3-to-5 minute episodes, part of Yahoo!'s new slate of online shows, go live every Monday and features Viviani demonstrating his favorite dishes, which, of course do not include burgers (or "boor-gers"). Find out what else you can expect from the series, if Viviani will pop on Top Chef again, and how his beloved turtle is doing.

Two-time Top Chef veteran Fabio Viviani may not know how to make a cheeseburger (or maybe he does), but he certainly knows American pizza. That is, if you believe his new ad for Domino's, in which Viviani touts the chain's new artisan pizza offerings.
The ad mainly show Viviani mispronouncing ingredients while talking up the pizza (which doesn't look that great in the spot).
Viviani also does promotional work for Italian food maker Bertolli, which introduced a new line of Premium Meal Soups for Two, endorsed by the chef.
"In Italy, we want delicious meals even when we don't have the time to go to a restaurant or make it from scratch. With Bertolli Meal Soups, people can have a great restaurant-quality meal anytime," says Viviani.
Ironically, he recently told Grub Street, "I don't want to be a media whore." ...

Love Is In The Air! Between All The Straight Guys!
While the concept of the "bromance" is nothing new — the term was coined back in the late 90s — observing the popular culture the past couple of weeks, I can't help but feel something has changed when it comes to straight guys expressing their affection for each other. Yes, I know gay guys can be in bromances, both with other gay guys and straight guys, but that's not what I'm addressing here. And, yes, I know there have been touching examples before, but something does seem different.
What exactly? I'd say it's not just how commonplace they've become, but the depth of feeling which these straight guys are now expressing for each other. What, in my opinion, was often kind of a jokey thing in the past, (or a little bit of wishful thinking on the part of fans — see Hawaii Five-0...

Bravo, you've come a long way baby. The network celebrated its upfronts presentation to potential advertisers on Wednesday (March 30) in a big way with a bicoastal bash and by announcing it had picked up 11 new series for its 2011-2012 schedule.
At the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, the network hosted an intimate gathering to watch the "Top Chef: All Stars" finale live and proudly paraded its stable of Bravolebrities at the same time.
All smiles (for now) as "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" has officially been renewed for Season 2, it's Kim Richards, Camille Grammer, Kyle Richards, Adrienne Maloof, Taylor Armstrong, and Lisa Vanderpump with mini-bravoleb Giggy.
Blond and buxom as per usual, "The Real Housewives of Orange County's" Peggy Tanous, Vicki Gunvalson, and Tamra Barney.
New Bravo golden boy, Brad Goreski, may have left Rachel Zoe, but he has a new series on Bravo and obviously knows who he should buddy up to.

Despite a season full of so many familiar faces with their own fanbases, only one could be named 'Top Chef All Stars' Fan Favorite. Bravo revealed the winner on 'Watch What Happens: Live' (Wednesday, 11Pm on Bravo).
The two finalists were "The Italian Stallion" Fabio Viviani and Carla Hall. A few years ago, Viviani beat out Hall for the honor in season five, but Hall, who lasted longer in 'All Stars' than Viviani, won it this season.
While Viviani looked disappointed, Hall was thrilled and grateful. "I really appreciate you voting, for you Tweeting, all of that stuff," she said. "And I need the money, too."

Tonight was just the first of (hopefully) many live Ustream's by Top Chef: All-Stars favorite Fabio Viviani. I couldn't fall asleep and saw on Twitter that he was streaming live with fans, so I figured I'd log in and see what was up. I'm glad I did. It was entertaining to hear the Florence native interact with fans, answer ridiculous questions and give funny shout-outs.

There's a lot that could be said about Fabio Viviani. Good chef. Funny guy. But, after having the pleasure of speaking with Top Chef-All Star's resident Italian riot, I must say that he's also very genuine. His hilarious commentary and addicting personality made my Wednesday nights. That is, until he sadly packed his knives last week.
At first glance, the Florence-bred chef comes off confident and charming, but what I find most endearing is that he's that funny dude who's not quite aware of just how funny he really is. While we might not always understand exactly what he's saying, we know it's going to be nothing but laughs underlined with pure f*cking sincerity.
