If you prefer Burton’s big visionary swings into darkness (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd), the family-friendly Dumbo will require adjustment to the PG light. Dumbo, the baby elephant who can use his weirdly big ears to fly, still occupies the center ring in Burton’s extravagant new circus. But screenwriter Ehren Kruger, infamous for three of the five Transformers films, has transformed the plot to include a mixed bag of human characters.

Michael Kutsche has done concept art for several Disney films, including Marvel titles like “Thor: Ragnarok.” But “Christopher Robin” gave him a special moment that no other project has: the moment when his design of Winnie The Pooh was presented to him as a real, stuff-and-fluff plush bear.
“Usually you just go from design to CG and see it in the final film,” he said. “But to actually see and feel the weight and the texture of the fur that I had in mind was so remarkable. Usually my job is so abstract and distant, but actually holding him felt like becoming a father in a weird way.”
Directed by “Finding Neverland” filmmaker Marc Forster, “Christopher Robin” sees Ewan McGregor as the weary, grownup who was once the childhood buddy of the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood. Facing the possibility of having to layoff employees at his company while...

There were so many great moments in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but one of the most fun was seeing Stan Lee sitting on a moon taking to The Watchers. The cameo was a tribute to the long time fan theory that Stan Lee is the Watcher of the full Marvel Cinematic Universe across all studios. He's the one thing that connects them all.
The concept art that you see above is a very early imagining that was created by character designer Michael Kutsche for director James Gunn. I love the look of Stan in the space suit. It's such a great visual.
What do you think of this early concept art?...

Exclusive: Idris Elba is in final negotiations to perform the role and provide the voice of the killer tiger Shere Khan in Disney’s live-action take on The Jungle Book. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is a mix of live action and VFX that is being overseen by Rob Legato, whose VFX credits include Avatar, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Hugo and Titanic, the latter two of which won him Oscars. The studio has bolstered its creative team by setting as its production designers Alex McDowell (Man Of Steel, Rise Of The Guardians) and Chris Glass heading a team of concept artists that includes Michael Kutsche (Alice, Oz, Maleficent), Iain McCaig (Star Wars), and Justin Sweet (Chronicles Of Narnia). The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

The Oscar voting deadline is today at 5 Pm Pst and if there are any Academy stragglers looking for help from the guilds they not only got the Directors Guild nominations yesterday, but the Cinematographers this morning and now the Costume Designers Guild have weighed in with their nominees in three categories -- Contemporary, Period and Fantasy Films. Obviously when it comes to Oscar predictions it's natural to lean toward period pieces and in this case it's interesting to see neither The Invisible Woman or The Book Thief among the nominees. I also wonder if Casey Storm can end up with an Oscar nomination with her near-future designs in Her, a film I didn't even have among my predictions (which, to be honest, were a little dusty they'd been so ignored), but have now moved into the top five. Andy Serkis has revealed that pre-production has begun on his film adaptation of George Orwell classic Animal Farm.
The movie, which was first announced in October 2012, is the first the actor has directed on his own and is also the debut project of Imaginarium, the performance capture studio he co-founded with producer Jonathan Cavendish.

"We've started pre-vis, which in the virtual world in many instances means you've already started shooting the film," he explained.

Costume designer Gary Jones took on the difficult task of bringing The Wizard of Oz back to life for a new millennium and a new audience that had grand expectations. Yet in the end his overall look for Oz the Great and Powerful was more grounded in reality than most of us expected.
This is about as far away from pantomime fantasy as you can get. Some of the outfits are, dare we say, wearable, even if you don’t have a costume party to go to. We inspected four of them close up back in February (read our analysis Here) so can attest at their relative simplicity. However don’t underestimate their intricacy. After working on The Talented Mr Ripley and The Princess Diaries, Gary Jones knows his way around pretty gowns, although surprisingly Oz the Great and Powerful is his first attempt at out-and-out fantasy. Check out this beautiful collection of unused character design concept art for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful. The art comes from Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. a.k.a. studioADI who made a pitch to work on the film. They didn't end up landing the gig, but it I do like many of the designs they came up with.
We were brought on to design characters for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful and had a big appetite for a combination of prosthetics, animatronics, and digital-enhanced characters. Ours was a different direction than production was headed (it's easy for us to have a big appetite when we're not paying the bills). Ultimately, the job went to our friends at Knb.

Notably since London Fashion Week (15th – 19th February), Disney has extensively promoted costumes from Oz the Great and Powerful. During Fashion Week, William Tempest and Deniz Berdan ‘inspired by’ dresses were featured along with Nicholas Kirkwood shoes made in conjunction with Selfridges. Since 28th February, four costumes from Oz have been on display at Selfridges’ flagship store in London: a dark grey period suit worn by James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a green sequin dress worn by Rachel Weisz as Evanora, a white tulle dress worn by Michelle Williams as Glinda, and the Wicked Witch costume worn by… well, go see the movie.
All costumes in Oz the Great and the Powerful, including obviously those at Selfridges, were designed by Gary Jones, working from initial drawings by character illustrator Michael Kutsche and influenced by Robert Stromberg’s production design. This unusual arrangement was instigated by director Sam Raimi, keen to create a cohesive fantasy world.

Williams, Weisz and Mila Kunis play three witches who are not sure if circus magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is the the great wizard they've been expecting to arrive in the Land of Oz.

Back in July, we brought you the first trailer for director Andrew Stanton‘s forthcoming film John Carter. Then in September, we brought you some very cool concept art for the forthcoming Walt Disney Pictures big-screen adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, John Carter of Mars.

I've added several new images to the site recently from many of the most anticipated films coming during the final days of 2011, but first let's begin with the brand new image from John Carter you see above courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. The toothy creature you see is referred to as a White Ape by director and co-writer Andrew Stanton. When asked about them and their involvement in the film he tells EW: [They're] sort of an oversized gorilla in the books, and they're kind of ubiquitous. They're littered everywhere through at least the first several novels. They were always cool, just from a visceral standpoint, [but] they don't really have a narrative function in the first book. So what we did is we made the White Apes a formidable creature that you kind of hear about throughout the movie, but you never really witness. There's a subtle sense of anticipation for what these things might be like.

We haven't seen much at all from this movie, and while the trailer left some people pretty cold, I think this is just the beginning of the wave of alien creatures that are going to be revealed from the film. Disney has released a new image from their upcoming sci-fi film project John Carter, which is the big screen adaptation of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs series. The movie was directed by Pixar direct Andrew Stanton and it stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe.
I have yet to see anything impressive from this movie which is a shame. This is a story I've been waiting to see brought to the big screen for a long time, and I'm not excited about it. Neither are a lot of other people, and that's not a good sign. There are multitudes of exotic creatures that populate John Carter — Walt Disney’s grand sci-fi adventure, out March 9, adapted from the seminal “John Carter of Mars” novel series penned by Edgar Rice Burroughs almost 100 years ago. There are the four-armed green Tharks that Civil War vet John Carter (played by Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch in the film) first encounters after he’s mysteriously transported to the war-torn surface of Mars. There’s the many-legged amphibi-dog named Woola that becomes Carter’s loyal companion. And then there are one of the most intriguing and fearsome creatures in the series: the great White Apes.

Now that Marvel Studios' latest comic book adaptation, Thor, has been in the theaters for a couple weeks, the studio has dialed down the secrecy that surrounded the production to offer us a look behind the scenes of the movie by allowing artists and designers to release some of the work they did during pre-production and by releasing behind-the-scenes images from the movie. One of those 'liberated' artists is concept artist and character designer Michael Kutsche, who has released three of his designs for the movie, two chilling (sorry, we couldn't resist) images of Frost Giants and a heroic shot of Odin (played by Academy Award-winner Sir Anthony Hopkins in the movie) riding his eight-legged horse Sleipnir, which was the basis of one of the pivotal scenes in the movie.

Now that Thor has been in theaters for a couple weeks, Marvel has loosened its iron grip of secrecy to allow some of the artists and designers who worked on the movie to display their artwork. A few days ago, Shasvre pointed us to two recently released images from concept artist and character designer Michael Kutsche, and now Kutsche has released a third character design on his personal website, an image of a Frost Giant. Michael Kutsche is an award-winning German artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is a self taught artist who works both in traditional and digital media. His work is best described as an astoundingly lifelike depiction of parallel realities, populated by odd characters reminiscent of movies, comics but also Flemish Renaissance Painting.
