Let’s call this pitch Filmography Expendables. Take an actor or actress, list his or her best characters and throw them in a movie together as a team of awesomeness. Or, since I’m still certain we’re heading into a “Vs.” movie trend — and the “Civil War” idea for Captain America 3, where Cap fights Iron Man, is further evidence — take a star’s best two characters and pit them against each other. We’re talking gold right there. The necessary effects are there and have been long enough that I’m surprised we haven’t seen more action sequences where an actor is fighting himself as clones or lookalikes or something like that. Oblivion gave us Tom Cruise versus Tom Cruise, but now the next step is to see Ethan Hunt go up against Jack Reacher (it could easily happen since both are from Paramount properties), and then of course they finish in a draw...

Last year I praised Justin Robinson's Everyman for being completely fresh, original and, well, damn good. Unbeknownst to me, Robinson had released another novel just before Everyman, and I'm happy to say that, while City of Devils is completely different, my assessment is going to be more of the same: it's fresh, original, and damn good. City of Devils is a detective novel with all the usual trappings: a stunning blonde seeking help from a rumpled private investigator; a seemingly simple case that becomes bigger with every lead; and a journey that takes our hero to the seedy underside of a big city, uncovering corruption involving the biggest players at the highest levels. The difference is this detective novel is set in an alternate reality where classic movie monsters like vampires, phantoms, gill men and gremlins share an uneasy peace with humans. Now, it would have been easy for...

"We're in the same boat, man!" To follow up all the Sundance announcements, here is a very cool action-thriller short film titled Proximity, or spelled PROXiMITY in the short, directed by up-and-comer Ryan Connolly (@ryan_connolly). The concept is key here, and it's all about messing with your mind as they're messing with the characters' minds. There's a good twist at the end and more than anything it's just a well done, super low budget little short showcasing the talent of Connolly and his cast/crew. He says there are over 50 VFX shots in the short, but you can barely tell. View the 11-min film in full and get more info below. Proximity is directed, shot and edited by Ryan Connolly, creator and host of Film Riot & Film State and now filmmaker. The script was written by Ryan Connolly and Seth Worley. The cast includes Todd Bruno, Josh Connolly and...

In this day and digital age, the question of identity is murkier than ever before. With a few mouse clicks we can transform ourselves into virtually anybody or anything, and it’s amazing how many people take the personas we build on the Internet at face value. People who can barely hold up their end of a conversation in person become passionate, persuasive arguers as long as that computer screen buffer exists between them and the people they are talking to/ranting at. While it’s easier than ever to shape an identity for ourselves online, it’s also easier to have that identity stolen away. All it takes is a moderately-skilled hacker to crack a few passwords, and suddenly your carefully crafted public persona is out of your control. That’s a terrifying thought, to be sure. Now apply the scenario to the real you – not your collection of passwords,...

One of Autumn Pasquale's alleged killers was Facebook friends with her, and used the social network to invite her to his house just days before she disappeared, says a new report.
