While you wait for V/H/S/85 later this year, V/H/S/99 has hit Blu-ray and DVD. Among the extras for the fifth installment in the found footage horror franchise is an audio commentary moderated by Bloody Disgusting’s own The Boo Crew Podcast hosts Trevor Shand and Leone D’Antonio.
All six filmmakers participate for their respective segments: Maggie Levin for “Shredding,” Johannes Roberts for “Suicide Bid,” Flying Lotus for “Ozzy’s Dungeon,” Tyler MacIntyre for “The Gawkers,” and Vanessa & Joseph Winter for “To Hell and Back.”
Here are seven things I learned from the V/H/S/99 commentary…
1. The film almost didn’t have a wraparound story.
Wraparound segments are traditionally used to make an anthology feel of one piece rather than a random collection of shorts, but the producers originally intended to forgo the framing device on V/H/S/99.
It was later decided to use the increasingly ambitious stop-motion...

"Deadstream" is one of the best horror movies of 2022, one that gives the found footage genre a refreshing facelift — a Screenlife movie that feels purposeful. Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter crafted a delightfully inventive, hilarious, spooky film that captures the essence of what Sam Raimi accomplished with "Evil Dead" but updated for modern times. As Matt Donato wrote in our review of "Deadstream," this is a "goofball, gross-out, grim-but-gleeful crowd pleaser."
The film follows man-baby buffoon Shawn Ruddy, a disgraced YouTuber trying to make a comeback by livestreaming his overnight stay at a haunted house — before realizing there may be actual ghosts in the house, which he upsets by being an insufferable idiot.
The film has a fantastic and painfully accurate portrayal of social media and the streamer landscape, from the way it mocks the fake apology videos of canceled YouTubers, to the dumb stunt videos and insufferable yet endlessly watchable personalities.

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to my faves of ‘22. It’s become redundant to say “it was another great year” but goddammit I can’t lie: 2022 was loaded with quality horror, up and down the line, across all media.
This means as with every recent year, I have missed several releases – a few of the big ones, and several smaller yet intriguing entries. My frequent bouts of absenteeism this time around weren’t because of any bouts of laziness or writer’s malaise, but rather due to working on my first book, A Cut Below: A Celebration Of B Horror Movies, 1950s - 1980s, coming this year from McFarland Publishing! Twelve film festivals each housing essays on five films with a common theme. I can hardly wait to share it with the world. End of plug!

Happy New Year, Daily Dead readers! Today, I'm kicking off our annual "Favorites" series with my 2022 picks and you'll see favorites from other Daily Dead team members throughout the week. On this week's episode of Corpse Club, we'll also be discussing 2022 favorites and what we're looking forward to in the new year. Our favorites are a little different from a traditional "Best Of" list and our lists can include anything from movies and streaming shows to collectibles and events. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2022.
This year was interesting for me in that I truly felt I hit that tipping point where more was being released than I could possibly keep up on. If you stick to just watching movies, it's not impossible to check out every horror release, but when you add TV series, video games, and graphic novels, it becomes challenging.

The mark of a memorable acting performance is decided by a number of different factors. How well can you display the intended emotion of the scene? Were the strengths of your performance tailored to make the audience scared? Depressed? Joyful? How about a jack of all trades performance that accomplished all of the above and more?
Horror is a genre that has the luxury of spanning different tones and subgenres – a messy melting pot chock-full of quality on-screen performances. The kind of work demonstrative of the strengths present in even some of horror’s weakest offerings. 2022 brought us a wealth of work in the field of horror that is near-impossible to recognize on a single list.

Endless things draw us each to horror, scares ranking high among them. Luckily, fear takes many forms. The thrill of a well-crafted jump scare, visceral chills, or an atmospheric scene that instills deep-seated dread all keep us coming back for more—the year’s horror releases delivered on all fronts.
2022 offered several memorable scenes of unrelenting dread and spine-tingling chills. Scenes that stood out and sent shivers down our spines and occasionally tested our gag reflexes.

I'm not sure what ritual sacrifice happened to gift us with such a phenomenal year of horror films, but scary movie fans feasted on some delicious frights throughout 2022. From the madcap twists in "Orphan: First Kill" to the moving cannibalistic romance in "Bones and All," horror fans were treated to a gore-filled buffet of murder, monsters, and bloody motivations. Even the Marvel Cinematic Universe got into the spooky season, releasing their fantastic Halloween special and loving ode to Universal Horror films, "Werewolf By Night."
But I'm not here to rank the year's best horror films: I'm here to see who is the baddest b***h in 2022. To make my list, the villain in question has to have more than brute strength, a mask, and a knife. Catchphrases are cute, but what these villains need to possess (and represent) is an enduringly terrifying idea. What's harrowing on-screen must creep off-screen, seeding...

The Cameras From The Horror-Comedy Deadstream Are Still Streaming, And You Can Watch Them Right Here
Warning: this article contains spoilers for "Deadstream."
Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadstream" is a current front-runner for one of the best horror releases of 2022, boasting a perfect blend of horror, comedy, and found-footage elements as well as one of the scariest scenes of the year. The low-budget fan favorite centers on a disgraced YouTuber named Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter) who tries to redeem his soiled reputation by hosting a livestream in a haunted house and breaking every possible horror movie rule in an attempt to keep his sponsors happy, and his audience from clicking away.
Utilizing the new technology that's become standard for streamers, Ruddy installs 13 different cameras around the haunted house, including head-strap cameras to show his own Pov and a camera tied onto a spear to give the most Sam Raimi-esque camera movement possible. If the story of "Deadstream" is to be believed, Shawn Ruddy's cameras should theoretically still be rolling,...

During the 31 days of Halloween, Shudder has a spooky lineup of frights for any horror fan and we recommend two movies for these chilly October nights.
Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 comes this year’s V/H/S/99.
V/H/S/99, which debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, premiered on Shudder on Thursday, October 20. The film features five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream).
V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

With so many streaming platforms and video-on-demand options, it's inevitable for can't-miss titles to slip through the cracks. Something like Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadstream" deserves all the attention in the world, which you can watch for a monthly Shudder subscription that amounts to pocket change. To make sure "Deadstream" doesn't get lost in the Halloween shuffle, it's my selection this week — take the hint!
I've already given y'all a full review out of SXSW for "Deadstream," which took the Midnight category by storm.

There’s a certain charm to the V/H/S franchise that I have never quite been able to put my finger on… until now. It’s that retro-style feel blended with the chilling horror elements that culminates in it feeling like both a warm hug and a rush of blood at the same time.
Are all of the movies in the franchise good? Certainly not. I’d argue that the first film is honestly the only truly great one… until now. V/H/S/99 is not only easily the best in the series since the first, but it’s also a legitimately chilling found footage horror anthology that comes...

Produced by Bloody Disgusting, the hit found footage horror franchise is back with V/H/S/99, now available exclusively on Shudder.
In V/H/S/99, the follow-up to last year’s hugely successful V/H/S/94 – #HailRaatma – a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to horrifying revelations. Capturing the final days of analog as it heads into a new millennium, V/H/S/99 delivers a punk rock attitude and wild horror throughout its five segments.
Why not celebrate accordingly? Let’s party like it’s 1999. We’re pairing each segment in V/H/S/99 with a horror movie from 1999, so you can keep the Y2K vibes going!
Kolobos – Pair with Maggie Levin’s “Shredding”
Levin’s opening segment in V/H/S/99 captures a ’90s MTV-style energy and aesthetic as it follows a group of pranksters with a Cky-like video series. The teens decide to break into an abandoned music venue for their latest mission for fame, and horror ensues.

You don’t have to be a jaded Hollywood cynic to understand why the “V/H/S” franchise isn’t going anywhere. As any studio executive worth their salt would be quick to point out, a recognizable horror brand built around deliberately cheap production value with enough elasticity to accommodate new trends is a terrible thing to waste. That, combined with a direct-to-streaming release strategy that frees it from box office expectations, gives the long-running horror anthology series little incentive to improve.
You’re gonna get a new “V/H/S” movie just about every Halloween until the end of time, and you’re gonna like it. Then again, there are worse fates in life.
While “V/H/S/99” is a far cry from the original, it still manages to be far more fun than it has any right to be. By connecting its horror vignettes with trippy stop-motion sketches instead of a unifying plot device,...

Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter made something special with "Deadstream," a thrilling and hilarious Pov horror film about a disgraced YouTuber desperately attempting to win back his audience by pulling the most ridiculous stunt imaginable. Joseph Winter stars as the fictional Shawn Ruddy, an insufferable online personality armed with all of the hot new technological gadgets viewers assume (and often demand) all creators utilize, who breaks into a notorious haunted house called Death Manor to livestream his overnight stay.
As this is a film starring a YouTuber-turned-streamer, Ruddy does just about everything a horror movie has taught us not to do in a haunted house, including destroying sacred items, performing a seance, reading Latin out loud, and talking wicked smack about the ghostly inhabitants as a means to keep his viewers interested. The comparisons to "The Evil Dead" and "Hell House LLC" are easy to make and not inaccurate, but...

When done well, found footage horror can take you on an immersive journey through terror. Memorable films can use their limitations and scope to create an unsettling atmosphere and potent scares, but avoiding the subgenre’s pitfalls, like explaining the found footage itself, can be tricky. Never mind that the digital age has complicated the definition of “found footage,” incorporating everything Pov from livestreams to Zoom meetings.
In other words, compelling found footage isn’t as easy to execute as it may seem, but plenty of blood-curdling horrors are still left to be mined from the subgenre.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror with a twist; it’s Halloween season, after all. These five found footage gems bring the scares and Halloween spirit.

The V/H/S series is back with its fifth installment, bringing the horror, the crazy and the fun, all in one nice, neat little package. I love anthology horror, so I am always going to be down for a new group of filmmakers telling new stories. V/H/S/99 brings 5 new tales to the series, ranging from scary to gross to freaking insane.
Shredding: Written and directed by Maggie Levin, this piece focuses on a 20-somethings punk band. There is a local legend about a literal underground club where a ton of prominent acts used to play. One night, there was a fire and a stampede to get out, and the band onstage was killed in the rush for the door. Our intrepid group wants to sneak in and make a video of themselves playing on that storied stage. Which honestly, would be a pretty badass idea, if not for all of the...

Back in 2012, “V/H/S” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to give “Paranormal Activity” and the rest of the found footage horror sub-genre a run for its money. And now, after three sequels, a spin-off, and a Snapchat miniseries, the fifth installment of the series is upon us, “V/H/S/99.”
Fresh off its world premiere in the Midnight section of TIFF last month, the latest anthology film in the series features segments from Johannes Roberts, Vanessa & Joseph Winter, Maggie Levin, Tyler MacIntyre, and Flying Lotus.

Plot: A disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by live-streaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.
Review: It’s really no surprise that Deadstream has been getting such high marks: it’s genuinely hysterical at times and downright frightening at others. I love the concept of someone putting themselves into a scary situation only to be shocked that something scary happens to them. There are so many different ways to do it, whether it’s with inbred hillbillies or vengeful ghosts, that it really allows the mystery to play out for quite some time. And that’s where the fun really begins.

Joseph Winter as Shawn Ruddy in Deadstream. Photo Credit: Shudder.
Deadstream is a little comedy horror flick that looks as if it were made on the cheap (which it probably was) but which turns its limited budget into an asset. Joseph Winter wrote and directed with wife, Vanessa Winter, and stars as an internet celeb named Shawn Ruddy who’s made a living by putting himself in danger. In each episode, he faces one of his fears for fun and profit. Apparently, that kept food on the table until he went too far in one adventure and lost his sponsors in disgrace. For his comeback after a six-month exile, he chooses to live-stream his night alone in a reputedly haunted house. That makes up the entire movie.
On the plus side, Winter makes this more visually interesting than most of the hand-held camera productions flooding screens ever since The Blair Witch Project,...

An out-of-favour celebrity seeks to win back viewers by filming his visit to a haunted house in well-judged mix of jokes and jump scares
This comic horror romp has no pretensions and seeks only to goof around and dole out a few jump scares, but in its own sly way it offers a Gen Z version of The Blair Witch Project. Just as that 1999 film showed hipster film-makers stumbling around an evil woodland, their handheld supposed “found” footage forming the film itself, this pretends to be a feed on a Twitch-like platform livestreaming the latest escapade of Shawn Ruddy (played by co-director Joseph Winter).
Shawn’s public persona is built around his foolhardy, faux-naif willingness to take stupid risks, but a recent stunt that went too far has cost him his sponsors. After making the obligatory apology video (there’s a lot of references to other shamed internet personalities...

Deadstream sees co-director Joseph Winter star as disgraced YouTube celebrity Shawn Ruddy, who will do anything to reclaim his influencer infamy. So he locks himself inside the reportedly haunted Death Manor that once belonged to lovesick 1800s poet Mildred Pratt. As Shawn breaks every horror movie rule for follower spikes, he accidentally angers a vengeful spirit and his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.
The Winters, Joseph and Vanessa, get the entire YouTube/streamer personality schtick Perfect… From the over the top behaviour, the constant plugging of merch, the no-shame attitude, and the fake and shallow nature of influencer culture, everything about Deadstream‘s protagonist Shawn is Incredibly on the nose – even down to the fawning “apology” he makes to his audience following behaviour that got him cancelled.

Shudder is bringing SXSW horror hit Deadstream (read Meagan’s review) into our homes this Halloween season, the found footage horror-comedy streaming on October 6th.
The feature directorial debut from husband-and-wife filmmaking couple Vanessa and Joseph Winter, Deadstream follows a disgraced internet personality who attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.
Get a taste of the haunting when Joseph Winter, who also stars in the film, summons a fright!
Melanie Stone and Jason K. Wixom also star.
Meagan wrote in her SXSW review, “The paranormal activity begins small, enough to instill rooting interest for its human characters, then ramps up with increasing splatstick energy. It spirals into a gonzo horror-comedy full of bodily fluids, gore, and ghostly creatures that would make Sam Raimi proud.

The inescapable problem at the core of any omnibus or anthology film with multiple cooks in the kitchen is, by all design, things will be uneven. Yet V/H/S/99 is fun enough in the context of TIFF’s Midnight Madness—including standouts from the usually gross and reliable Flying Lotus and Johannes Roberts, whose film is genuinely terrifying before turning a bit silly in its final moments.
As for the others, Maggie Levin’s Shredding contains a frightening concept (a Blink 182-style punk band plays a show in an abandoned basement nightclub where concertgoers were trampled to death in a fire years ago). It also has a few big laughs making fun of the styles and punk angst of the era playing out in zines and, of course, on AOL.

"Coming to you live from - Death Manor!" Get ready to scream!! Shudder has revealed an official trailer for an indie found footage horror film titled Deadstream, which will be out on Shudder for streaming at the start of October. This first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it has also played at the Neuchâtel Film Festival and Fantasy Filmfest, with a stop at the Sitges Film Festival as well. In this audacious box of horrors, an internet personality tries to win back followers by livestreaming himself in a haunted house. Described as a "hilarious and bloody tribute to classics like Evil Dead 2 and The Blair Witch Project." Starring Joseph Winter and Melanie Stone, plus a bunch of nasty monsters. Reviews say it has "an impressive consistency to the way the filmmakers bounce this man who's used to living online around an unimaginably real nightmare.

I love horror anthology movies ... at least in theory. I really love the idea of an anthology — a series of short films tied together in one neat package. But the truth is, there are more bad horror anthologies than good. Even the best of the best almost always have at least one segment worth skipping. The "V/H/S" franchise might be the worst offender — there are five films in the series so far, and I can count the number of good segments on one hand. The best of the best is, without question, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2," a brilliantly-conceived and genuinely scary story about a death cult. But nothing else in the series has ever come close to that tale.
In fact, I've found the series so miss-heavy that I kind of gave up on it. And then came "V/H/S/94," which ended up being my favorite in the entire franchise.
