Five years ago, [Rec] franchise co-creator Paco Plaza‘s horror movie Veronica was released through the Netflix streaming service, and Netflix subscribers reportedly found the film to be so terrifying that they would have to stop the movie mid-stream because they couldn’t handle the scariness. With that sort of press, it’s no surprise that Plaza and Netflix have chosen to expand the concept into a franchise with a prequel called Sister Death, or Hermana Muerte. Now the streaming service’s Tudum site has revealed that Sister Death will be released this October! They haven’t revealed the specific release date yet, but it’s nice to know this movie will be a viewing option during Halloween season this year.
The screenplay for Sister Death was written by Jorge Guerricaechevarria, who frequently works with popular genre filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia. The story he crafted has the following synopsis: In post-war Spain,...

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the set of the Brazilian horror film The Trace We Leave Behind (a.k.a. O Rastro), which didn’t quite get the big international release it was originally supposed to, but did turn out to be a cool movie. You can read my review at This Link. The Trace We Leave Behind turned out so well, I’m very glad to hear that producer André Pereira has made a new horror film, this time teaming up with History of the Occult director Cristian Ponce for A Mother’s Embrace.
Variety got their hands on a couple first-look images from A Mother’s Embrace, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Directed by Ponce from a script he wrote with Pereira and Gabriela Capello, this film is set in 1996, during one of the biggest storms to ever hit Rio de Janeiro.

As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.
This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.
Somehow, the TV network owner, festival director, writer, publisher and radio host found time to make appearances in three high-profile films screening at this year’s fest: Paco Plaza’s “Eye for an Eye,...

Mexico City — Morbido Festival, Mexico’s most important event for genre cinema, has announced that Spain’s Paco Plaza, “Veronica” director and co-creator of the 2007-14 “Rec,” the breakout hit found-footage horror movie series, will be attending the festival and writing a script for one of its newest initiatives.
This year, Morbido Group renovated the haunted house at the biggest and oldest theme park in Mexico, La Feria de Chapultepec. The house sees more than 10,000 visitors a week, and Morbido has enlisted Plaza to write the attraction’s 2019 script.
It’s the latest in an increasingly diverse portfolio of undertakings by Grupo Morbido, which launched Morbido TV in 2015. The service is a Mexican pay TV channel that is now broadcasting in a number of South America countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.

Terrific news from Screen Daily yesterday for our good friends at Grupo Morbido and Demian Rugna, director of the great shocker Terrified (Aterrados), and his production team in Argentina. Grupo Mórbido, the Mexican distributor run by Mórbido Film Fest founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger, has struck a deal with Aura Films in Argentina to handle joint theatrical distribution in Latin America on paranormal horror Terrified (Aterrados). Terrified stars Maxi Ghione, Norberto Amadeo Gonzalo and Elvira Onetto and centres on a police officer and an old friend who investigate a series of paranormal occurrences in homes. I really liked this paranormal shocker from Argentina. A lot. You should find a link for my review below. Terrified's sales agent Aura Films is closing in on...

The pact, struck at the Efm in Berlin last week, is intended to capitalise on the well-received premiere from Demian Rugna’s genre title at Morbido in Mexico last November, where it won the Morbido-Cinepolis Distribution Award guaranteeing a release in Mexico.

Cavitycolors pays tribute to Maniac Cop 2 with a new shirts and pins collection, and in today's Horror Highlights, we also have details on Aliens Ate My Homework, What the Waters Left Behind, and The Tormenting.
Maniac Cop 2 Shirts and Pins Collection: From Cavitycolors: "Hey Fiends!
This Thursday, we're bringing you our officially licensed Maniac Cop 2 collection!
Written by Larry Cohen (The Stuff) and directed by William Lustig (Maniac), Part 2 of the series is my personal favorite entry in the series. A 90's cult classic in the truest sense, it's just so satisfying to see a much more monstrous Matt Cordell wreak havoc on the streets of New York City. We couldn't be more excited to work with top notch artists on this release, including Devon Whitehead, Jason Edmiston, Shane Murphy, and Matt Skiff. All art is officially licensed, and approved by William Lustig himself for what might...

The Onetti brothers (Nico and Luciano) are at it again. The producer and director of Francesca and Sonno Profondo are hard at work on their next film, What the Waters Left Behind, and it would appear that they are diverting away from the Giallo genre and into another horror subgenre all together. They are currently filming in the ruins of Epecuén, Argentina. Morbido festival director Pablo Guisa Koestinger is helping the brothers with the film, even appearing in a cameo role. Because Koestinger is as wise as he is dashing he told the brothers that they should let the Screen Anarchy family know about this new project. Along with the description below we also we sent some production stills to share with you. ...

Evil Games, when squinted at from afar, might resemble one of the Coen Brothers’ crime-driven dark comedies. The story – about a kidnapping gone right which goes terribly wrong only after the victim has safely returned home – is at least unconventional enough for the standards of Joel and Ethan. However, the premise is all the film’s got going for it, and not long into proceedings I was praying for a more capable filmmaker (or filmmakers) to wrest it from writer/director Adrián García Bogliano’s hands.
The plot is preceded by a drone-filmed shot of a Mexican highway, fenced off on either side by trees and fields. The not-quite-bird’s-eye-view moves menacingly across the landscape and swoops in toward the cars on...

Looks like the Morbido family is sticking close to home this year as the ninth edition of one of the most important Latin American genre film festivals is staying in Mexico City this year. While we have loved going to destinations like Patzcuero and Puebla in the past we are excited to be staying with our Morbido family in one of the largest cities in the World. Have you been there? It's mental. It nearly has the population of Canada in the metropolitan area of Mexico City! We usually drop into the Mxc then take off the next morning to our destination but not this year. An entire week in the Mxc? Wow. Today, the festival's suave director Pablo Guisa Koestinger is announcing the festival's homestay....

In a month's time the Morbido International Horror and Fantasy Film Festival will descend upon the colonial town of Pátzcuaro, Mexico, for its sixth edition. The first wave of titles have been announced and as always there will be an excellent selection of international titles and a lot of Latin American talent on display. And we will be at the festival again this year bringing you updates throughout that weekend. Familiar international titles will include Eugenio Mira's Grand Piano, starring Elijah Wood. Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army will give festival director Pablo Guisa Koestinger a reason to dust off that uniform he wore for last year's screening of Iron Sky. Swiss vampire flick Chimères looks to take a bite out of the audience. And another familiar international...
