Though she is expecting to be “running around like a rabbit in the headlights” during this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Poppy Delevingne has a pretty peaceful vibe about her while discussing her French Riviera schedule.
The actress, model and entrepreneur is back in Cannes as an ambassador for luxury jeweler Chopard so her itinerary is jammed with red carpet appearances and events. But she’ll also be squeezing in some project-related meetings and likely some handshaking as Delevingne has a film hitting the Cannes Market courtesy of Rohit Karn Batra’s timely tale The Gun on Second Street. Ahead of hitting the Croisette, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Delevingne to talk all things Cannes, travel must-haves and the newest plans for her prosecco brand Della Vite.
You said in a 2015 interview with W magazine ahead of your first trip to Cannes that you were only hoping not to fall up the Palais steps.

You’ve been in the business a long time.
I love working and being challenged by the process. I know the industry is changing. It’s reinvented itself a few times in just the amount of time that I’ve been a part of it. It’s always about finding new and exciting material.
It’s unusual to have a crime thriller set in India that’s not a Bollywood film.
The script had all of the best qualities of classic crime literature with very universal themes.

Brendan Fraser’s mummy-killing days may be behind him, but Encino Man will rise again. The actor has just been announced as the villain in “The Field,” a Bollywood gangster drama marking the directorial debut of Rohit Karn Batra. He’s set to star as a gun-runner named Charu whose “illicit dealings with the Indian underworld wedges him in the middle of the family implosion.”

Ray Liotta was initially attached the project when first it was announced in 2014, but alterations to the screenplay led to personnel changes as well. “The more the script evolved,” said Batra, “the more obvious it became Brendan was the best choice for the idiosyncratic role of Charu. For a director to explore this journey with him in a place like India is nothing less than a once in a lifetime opportunity.” India isn’t as well known to the outside world for its hard-hitting genre fare as it is for its musicals, but anyone who’s seen Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour “Gangs of Wasseypur” knows that “The Field” won’t be the first mob movie to emerge from Bollywood.
