- During his first year in California, he suffered a leg injury in a fight scene during a performance of a professional stage production, which disabled him from dancing and he had to drop out. When it healed in a few weeks, he was unable to get another dancing job right away, and he started to go broke. He parked cars for a couple of months at the Hollywood Brown Derby, until he was finally able to get another gig in a show.
- His hitch in the Army, then moving to Manhattan and living there for three and a half years without his golf clubs (which he left in Chicago), much less being able to afford the funds for green fees if he did have his clubs, broke his addiction to the game of golf, and he has yet to become re-hooked.
- All through his teen years, caddied at the exclusive, Medina Country Club, outside Chicago, becoming one of its top caddies, and jocking loops for all of the big-shot members.
