For 25 years, Olivia Benson's fought the good fight, but it sucks when she loses a victim.
She learned that the hard way on Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 1 when all her efforts to find a missing teenager led nowhere.
This strange, heartbreaking case was the perfect way to kick off the long-running series' historic 25th season -- but is this the end of Maddie's story?
Maddie's kidnapping happened at the same time as the baptism of Rollins' baby. The celebratory scenes at the church and the bar afterward made Maddie's disappearance even more powerful a gut punch.
I was surprised that nobody explicitly referenced the parallel.
Rollins has been worried since becoming pregnant 0about bringing another child into a world where monsters prey on young people, yet she seemed undisturbed by the incident. She was focused entirely on how Benson was doing.
It might have been especially terrifying if she knew all the details.

Law & Order: Svu just hit a major milestone. The police procedural is heading into its 25th season, and the show’s cast decided to celebrate the occasion in style. Mariska Hargitay, Ice-t, and other stars of the NBC drama, past and present, gathered at Edge at Hudson Yards in New York City on Jan. 16 to mark the show’s birthday ahead of the season 25 premiere on Jan. 18.
It’s been a long journey for the special victims unit squad. The show launched in 1999 as a spinoff of Law & Order. Since then, more than 500 episodes have aired, and the show has become the second-longest-running scripted primetime drama after The Simpsons (based on the number of seasons). Let’s take a look at some of the Law & Order: Svu cast, then and now.

How much clamor there was for a crossover of the three FBI series is debatable.
Still, a reasonably seamless narrative ran through FBI: International Season 2 Episode 16, FBI Season 5 Episode 17, and FBI: Most Wanted Season 4 Episode 16.
That makes sense because crossovers are old hat for Dick Wolf.
One of the earliest crossovers was Wolf's Og Law & Order, crossing over with Tom Fontana's Homicide in 1996. The two series crossed over twice more during their runs.
Richard Belzer's John Munch, the crossover king who appeared in 10 different series, even moved from Homicide to Wolf's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999.
Subsequently, crossovers have become more commonplace between and within Wolf's One Chicago and Law & Order franchises. So this FBI crossover was inevitable.
There was a crossover between FBI and FBI: Most Wanted in 2020. There also have been phone calls among the three teams.

Richard Belzer played the character of Detective John Munch for nearly 30 years, popping up as Munch in various TV shows that span across genres. Belzer felt like an actor who would just be around forever, which made his recent death at the age of 78 all the more melancholy. But while Belzer may be gone, his legacy lives on. And now, USA Network will pay tribute to the late actor by airing a "Munch-a-thon" that will feature 10 of Belzer's best episodes from "Law & Order: Svu." I confess I haven't watched any form of "Law & Order" in years, but Munch was always one of my favorite characters, so I might have to tune in and check this out.

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star and producer Mariska Hargitay paid tribute to her late co-star Richard Belzer Thursday, days after his death on Feb. 19 at the age of 78.
“He was family and taught me so much about taking risks and creativity and trust and he brought so much joy to the set,” Hargitay said while speaking with Savannah Guthrie during an appearance on “Today.”

Belzer left “Svu” in 2016. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Mariska Hargitay is once again remembering Richard Belzer, her late Law & Order: Svu co-star, as a special “heart and soul” who as both an actor and comedian was “brilliant.”
While appearing on NBC’s Today to discuss the latest episode of one of TV’s longest-running series as well as celebrate longtime colleague and friend Ice-t’s recent Hollywood Walk of Fame honor, the actress opened up about Belzer, who died on Feb. 19 at 78.
“What a heart and soul,” she told Savannah Guthrie. “He was family and taught me so much about taking risks and creativity and trust.”
Hargitay added that while working on the series with her, from which he retired as a series regular in 2016, “he brought so much joy to the set.” According to the actress and EP, he also — despite being an “acerbic, quick-witted, brilliant” mind — had a soft spot for children, whom he would “melt” at the sight of.

Comedian and actor Richard Belzer, who sadly died on Sunday at age 78, played detective John Munch on several series, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” And on every single one of them, he had something wise and witty to say.
The character of John Munch was created on the underrated ’90s police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Munch was known for his one-liners, metaphysical riffs and sprawling conspiracy theories while solving murders in Baltimore alongside detectives played by Andre Braugher, Daniel Baldwin and Ned Beatty. As he mused in one episode: “If a murder is committed in Baltimore and no homicide detective takes the call, did that homicide actually occur?”
He got a bit blue when the character moved over to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 1999, where the topics were rape, assault and, sometimes, sexual dysfunction, but he was still the same Munch.

The world recently lost a talented comedian, a gifted actor, and an all-around incredible human being when Richard Belzer passed away at the age of 78. Belzer was a former audience warm-up comedian for "Saturday Night Live," and his knack for bringing the funnies helped make his most memorable character, Bpd Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and Da Investigator John Munch, everyone's favorite fictional member of law enforcement. The television empire of cop dramas from executive producer Dick Wolf has made household names of characters like Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson, Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler, and Ice-t's Odafin Tutuola -- but Belzer's John Munch is in a class all his own.

For Max Borenstein, penning Season 1 of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” wasn’t his ideal writing situation. While he used his home office in Venice and spent most of his days there alone with his cats — more on them below! — now he’s excited to be in a real writers’ room for Season 2.
“We have the house for the second season that we’ve been renting in Venice,” he says. “After spending the duration of the quarantine writing one on Zoom from home, I’ve had about enough solitude for a moment. I find it much more inspiring to be around the other people that I’m collaborating with.”
While working on the first season of the HBO series, he started a new tradition with his writers. After putting together an outline, he’d bring them all together on Zoom and they’d all chime in to get it into script format.

Law & Order: Svu has been on the air so long that viewers don't expect many surprises.
But the long-running crime drama takes its record-breaking 21st season seriously.
During the first half of Law & Order: Svu Season 21, there have been some big changes and big stories.
Some of it has been great, while other aspects could use some work.
Check out our midseason report card and let us know what you think.
Mixed review: Ada Carisi
The idea of a former Svu detective becoming the new Ada is logical and opens up a ton of storyline potential.
Carisi knows Svu in and out and is having trouble adjusting to the more political nature of the Da's office, which is fascinating.
He and Rollins have also butted heads a lot over her anger that he left Svu.
But Carisi often acts both as a cop and a Da, and that's not realistic.

As a title for this week's episode of The Deuce, "Show and Prove" is a tough one to beat. Within its dirty world of 1971 Times Square, the phrase refers to the NYPD's demand for sex workers to produce paperwork proving they've already been arrested within the past 48 hours. This allows them a reprieve from the current night's "ho patrol" bust – a crime-stopping tactic so familiar that the police and prostitutes all order Chinese takeout and eat it in the precinct house's courtyard together.

On September 20, 1999, audiences were invited to explore another side of New York City, where crimes were “especially heinous.” The first spinoff of creator Dick Wolf’s successful Law & Order series, Special Victims Unit introduced viewers to a new team of “dedicated detectives” -- Oliva Benson (Mariska Hargitay), Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), Monique Jeffries (Michelle Hurd) and John Munch (Richard Belzer), led by Capt. Don Cragen (Dann Florek) -- tasked with bringing justice for sexually based crimes.
Their stories quickly became beloved by audiences as the series not only became a ratings hit for NBC, but also earned critical acclaim -- including a historic run of Emmy nominations and wins for its guest stars -- and adoration among the many actors who passed through on their way to stardom.

Some thoughts on tonight's Brooklyn Nine-Nine/New Girl crossover — and why it only occasionally lived up to the idea of being a crossover — coming up just as soon as we watch five full seasons of The A-Team together... There are two basic types of TV crossover: 1)When the shows share a creative team and/or universe, and 2)When the network and/or studio wants to make it happen. The first tend to involve spin-offs, from Richie and Fonzie running into Laverne and Shirley at a dude ranch to Green Arrow going to Central City to enlist the Flash's help, and they're generally more natural, though they can also be clunky. (The Berlanti crossovers often seem to be made under the belief that the same people are watching all of the shows, when varying ratings levels suggest otherwise.) Though there are some strong examples of the second — notably the Homicide/Law & Order crossovers,...

Happy Friday, everybody! Time for another Ask Alan. In this week's episode, we start right off with a question that has no right — or wrong — answer: who should win in an Emmy faceoff between Fargo's Bokeem Woodbine and The People v. O.J. Simpson's Courtney B. Vance? Then I pick some — but by no means all — of my favorite musical numbers from non-musical TV shows, before another showdown of sorts: Grant Gustin as Barry Allen vs. Richard Belzer as John Munch for most ubiquitous character in TV history. You can watch the video embedded at the top and bottom of this post. As always, send questions to askalan@hitfix.com. The more tightly-phrased, the better.
