Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) debate their opposing views on religion verses reason on the verge of World War II, in Freud’S Last Session.
Freud’S Last Session is based on the stage play of the same name, in which the now-elderly famous Dr. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, invites the much younger professor C. S. Lewis, a rising Oxford don who will write the Narnia book series, into his home in London, to which the Jewish doctor fled ahead of Hitler’s invading troops from his native Vienna. On the brink of Britain’s entry into WW II, these two intellectual giants meet for the first time and discuss a range of philosophical topics, including the existence...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Freud’s Last Session, which Sony Pictures Classics pre-bought after teaming with star Anthony Hopkins to release his Oscar-winning turn in The Father.
The film had its world premiere at AFI Fest and hits U.S. theaters December 22.
Freud’s Last Session began as a play by Mark St. Germain, who adapted the script for the feature with director Matt Brown. The premise originally came to St. Germain after reading Harvard psychiatrist Armand Nicholi’s book The Question of God (later a PBS series), which compared Sigmund Freud’s and C.S. Lewis’ thoughts on faith and human nature based on their collective scholarship and letters.
Both the play and movie are set on September 3, 1939, when the atheist Freud (Hopkins) and devoutly religious Lewis (Matthew Goode), two of the century’s greatest minds, meet and debate the...

Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Past Session. Here’s the trailer.
Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though this role is unlikely to involve fava beans and a nice Chianti. In fact, this time, it looks as though dinner is off the menu entirely.
Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St Germain, itself based on the book The Question Of God by Dr Armand M Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles Of Narnia author Cs Lewis, here played by Matthew Goode, over for a debate about the existence of God.
Sounds like just the kind of fodder that actors love getting their teeth into, and the acclaim for the play itself suggests that it’s no chore for audiences either. The adaptation into a film should build on that,...

While many of our favorite sci-fi shows seem to either be on hold or suddenly canceled, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind shows no sign of stopping. The alternate history show is blasting off with its fourth season on the streamer this November and, as always, the premiere is the most exciting part of the series’ return for those who are curious to see where all the characters have ended up after the traditional massive time jump.
The season four opening montage sets the stage for a new era, and clears away anything surplus to requirements. Unfortunately, that means that we’ve likely seen the last of Jodi Balfour’s Ellen Wilson for a while, as we’re informed that she and Bush won re-election, but the Democrats then swept to victory four years later with President Al Gore now in charge of the country. Bigger and longer are not always better. Case in point: Freud’s Last Session, the lavish film based on a modest off-Broadway play that captivated theater audiences a decade ago. Playwright Mark St. Germain worked with director Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) to reshape his two-character drama about an imaginary conversation between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they debate the existence of God. That provocative exchange is still in the movie, and it sometimes crackles, thanks to the performances of Matthew Goode as Lewis and, especially, Anthony Hopkins as Freud. But the heart of the story is constantly undermined by a surfeit of asides about Lewis’ experiences in the First World War, Freud’s highly charged relationship with his daughter Anna, and several other subplots.
The main culprit here may be the current fashion for time-fractured, nonlinear narratives. It is rare these days to see a movie...

On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.

Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis battle over the existence of God on the eve of World War II in Freud’s Last Session.
The first trailer for the Sony Pictures Classics film starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode released on Wednesday, and sees the two actors portraying the famed psychologist and author, respectively.
“Why would you come here to see me if you disagree so passionately with my views?” Hopkins’ Freud asks Goode’s Lewis from across his office desk.
It’s two days after Hitler has invaded Poland, as German bombs rattle England, Freud — who fled Vienna following Nazi forces’ presence in his homeland — is now visited by the theologian Lewis in London. Not quite famous yet to the degree his Chronicles of Narnia series will bring him, the former atheist turned Christian has come to confront the “Father of Psychoanalysis.”

For All Mankind has settled into life on Mars’ self-sustaining colony in the first trailer for Season 4, but a new space race to get the “most valuable known object in our solar system” has us worried about Ed Baldwin & Co. (But mostly Ed.)
“Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since Season 3, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners,” reads the official synopsis. “Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars.

When For All Mankind Season 4 gets underway on Apple TV+, viewers will see less of one of its most popular stars.
TV Line reports that Jodi Balfour is bowing out of the alt-history drama as a series regular.
Balfour, who plays Ellen, is expected to appear in some capacity.
The series has said goodbye to some fantastic people over the years, and something tells us we'll be saying goodbye to more as the years in the narrative go on.
Ellen has been a key player since For All Mankind Season 1, and her presence has been felt throughout three glorious seasons.
Knowing that we'll be seeing less of her doesn't give us much excitement for For All Mankind Season 4.
As you'll recall, the criminally underrated series ended its third season by writing out Shantel VanSanten's Karen Baldwin and Sonya Walger's Molly Cobb.

This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
"Ted Lasso" was adept at delivering the thrills of a sports drama, with the fall and rise of an underground English football team, while also telling a beautiful story about community, mental health, self-improvement, and being open about emotions.
After three seasons, "Ted Lasso" is seemingly, apparently, as far as we know, done and over. After two very strong seasons, the final season was a very mixed bag, with a lack of focus thanks to longer episodes that dragged on, a sermon-of-the-week format that seemed to take away from the joy of earlier seasons, and a misguided football story that was too obsessed with winning — until it wasn't.
This is (kind of) a football show, of course, meaning the characters' careers and stories carry on after the end of the finale. We know Ted Lasso's career at AFC Richmond is over,...

A group of SAG-AFTRA members, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jean Smart and Bob Balaban, has released a video urging their fellow performers to approve the strike authorization that’s currently out for a vote of the guild’s eligible members.
The vote comes in advance of the guild’s upcoming negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which are set to start on June 7. A strike, if it comes to that, could not start before June 30, when the guild’s current contract expires.
The Directors Guild, meanwhile, is currently in negotiations with the AMPTP. Their contract also expires on June 30, and the Writers Guild has been on strike for 29 days.
“I’m asking you to join me in voting ‘yes’ on the strike authorization,” Louis-Dreyfus says on the video.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Ted Lasso."
Rarely has a guest character ever gone from so admired to so hated as quickly as "Ted Lasso" newbie Jack. Jack, who's played by "For All Mankind" star Jodi Balfour, first popped up in the series just a few episodes ago, quickly stealing Keeley's (Juno Temple) heart and ingratiating herself to fans by appearing to be the hippest, most chill rich queer girl of all time. We should've known it was too good to be true. By episode eight, Jack and Keeley's relationship seemed to dissolve in front of our eyes like wet cotton candy. It turned out Jack was actually a regressive slut-shamer, a terrible fit for a confident former nude model.
In an interview with Vulture, Balfour debriefed on last week's break-up and the road ahead for Jack and Keeley. While the latest episode of the show...

That scene between Keeley and Jack was potentially the roughest moment in episode 9 of the third season of "Ted Lasso." Thanks in large part to the performances of both Juno Temple and Jodi Balfour, the scene highlighted a key moment when the honeymoon phase of new love dies. Though this time, it was at the hands of an ideological choice made by Balfour's Jack, rather than an external force.
Balfour opened up about the scene during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that, despite the tone of the scene, it was one of the more memorable moments on set for her. "That last scene between us, which is awful and devastating, was actually the highlight. It's a series of scenes that we shot in almost real-time, even though it doesn't play that way," the actor explained to THR. "The moment Jack arrives and Keeley is playing at the table.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers through Ted Lasso Season 3, Episode 8, “We’ll Never Have Paris.”] Ted Lasso introduced a new couple in Season 3 as Keeley (Juno Temple) got close to boss, Jack (Jodi Balfour), but things took a turn in Episode 8 after a private video of Keeley leaked online. Part of a mass hacking, a private video Keeley sent to Jamie (Phil Dunster) when they were together was released, making her the topic of news articles condemning the sexual nature of it all. Needless to say, the event put an obvious wedge between Keeley and Jack, with the latter not claiming Keeley as her girlfriend in front of acquaintances and canceling public engagements out of embarrassment. By the end of the episode, Jack and Keeley don’t see eye-to-eye about the video. While Keeley is upset it went public, she isn’t ashamed for making it, whereas Jack tries forcing her to put a statement out to say otherwise. ...

This post contains spoilers for season 3 of "Ted Lasso."
One of the most beloved characters on "Ted Lasso" is Keeley (Juno Temple), the ambitious, bubbly woman who, in season 3, is at the head of her own PR film and finds herself inexplicably broken up with Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein).
It's hard to imagine Keeley played by anyone else besides Temple, and it turns out that there's a reason for that: the writers changed how they wrote Keeley once Temple was brought on board.
In a March 2023 interview with Collider, Goldstein — who is also a writer on the show — shared that he has nothing but praise for his co-star and that he was even a little bit intimidated by her at first. "I was scared of working with Juno Temple because she's such a great actor," he confessed. The two soon found their rhythm, however, and the show has become better for it.

"Ted Lasso"'s Billy Harris knows some fans have been waiting a long time for this. Harris plays Colin Hughes, a Welsh left winger for the shows's fictional AFC Richmond. In the third episode of season two, Colin makes a passing comment about Grindr, which goes unremarked on by the rest of the team. But some fans - especially LGBTQ+ ones - thought the show was laying the seeds before ultimately revealing Colin is queer. And in season three, the show reveals that Colin is gay, though he's still hesitant about coming out publicly. Harris tells Popsugar that he had "so many interactions" with fans about Colin's Grindr line, and he was glad that the show validated their theories this season.
He especially cherishes the sixth episode of this season, where Colin has a heart-to-heart with Trent Crimm (James Lance), who's also queer. Colin is tired of living what he calls two lives,...

[This story contains spoilers for Ted Lasso season three, episode eight: “We’ll Never Have Paris.”]
The eighth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season (and potentially its final season, depending on who you ask) sees several characters stuck inside of sad songs. And while it gets better for most of them, it doesn’t end so happily for everybody.
In “We’ll Never Have Paris,” written by Keeley Hazell and Dylan Marron, three romantic relationships shift through three very different phases. There’s new love in the form of Nate (Nick Mohammed) and Jade (Edyta Budnik). So new that “love” might even be too strong a word for it, but “boyfriend” is the exact right word as Jade makes her feelings for Nate plainly clear. There’s the potential for some restored love in the form of Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and his ex-wife Michelle (Andrea Anders), who comes to London with her son Henry (Gus Turner) and new boyfriend Dr. Jake...

This post contains spoilers for the fifth episode of "Ted Lasso" season 3.
The minute "For All Mankind" and "Bomb Girls" star Jodi Balfour appeared on screen in "Ted Lasso," I knew this show was heading somewhere fun. Actually, even before viewers saw financier Jack's face, soft sparks were already flying between her and Keeley (Juno Temple) when the pair shared an unorthodox, tampon-related meet-cute. A moment later, their face-to-face introduction featured approximately 500% more eager-but-shy smiles than any platonic work event ever should. Yeah, I thought, there's definitely something there.
Still, the fact that Keeley and Jack's shippy new dynamic gave way so quickly to a passionate hook-up is a surprise – if a welcome one. "Ted Lasso" has never explicitly stated that Keeley is into women, but it's no surprise given some of her flirty exchanges with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) over the years, like when she gawks at her friend's nearly-leaked nudes.

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
Hunt’s answer: “I mean, you’ve seen the show before. You know how it goes.”
In “Signs,” the show’s fifth episode of season three, it went. Or rather, he went: After firing up the team before a match with powerhouse Manchester City — by basically repeating the same idea Jamie (Phil Dunster) offered up moments before — Zava no-shows for the match. He later explains to his social media followers — ahem, “believers” — that he’s retiring to focus solely on his family and his avocado farm.

Jodi Balfour, who made her debut as Jack in "Ted Lasso"'s third and final season, is one-half of one of Hollywood's funniest couples. The actor is engaged to "Broad City" star Abbi Jacobson. The pair confirmed their engagement in the summer of 2022.

In the third season of Ted Lasso, Ted and his coaches discuss whether it’s a good idea for AFC Richmond to pursue Zava, a brilliant footballer who is also a ball-hogging diva. Adding Zava to the team would be a massive talent boost, but it would mean reconfiguring the entire offense around the new guy, sending one current starter to the reserves, changing everyone else’s role, and perhaps disrupting the harmonious locker room chemistry that has been Ted’s biggest achievement since arriving to coach in the Premier League.

As Apple TV+ prepped to roll out the blue carpet in Westwood this week for the Season 3 premiere of its Emmy Award-winning comedy juggernaut Ted Lasso, one question lingered in the air: Is this the end?
Ahead of the Tuesday night event, Ted Lasso himself, co-creator, star and executive producer Jason Sudeikis, got ahead of the inevitable press line interrogation to make it clear that the time on the Richmond scoreboard is, indeed, running out. “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell,” Sudeikis told Deadline.
The 12-episode season debuts March 15 and continues through May 31, and while options remain on the field for spinoffs and future iterations (Richmond Till We Die, anyone?), Sudeikis made it clear that this is his final bow as the beloved “aw shucks” Midwesterner turned English Premier League soccer coach but he believes there is more life left.

In a video message conceived, organized and produced by Iranian-American screenwriter Nicole Najafi, director, writer and producer Ana Lily Amirpour, and actress-writer Mozhan Marnò, the collection of entertainers are captured through photos holding signs featuring the hashtag #StopExecutionsinIran. “We stand with the people of Iran in their fight for freedom,” the video reads. “Thousands of protesters have been arrested. Some have already been executed. Many more are in danger. But the world is watching.”
The effort, which encourages viewers to make their own hashtag signs and post photos to their social media, took 10 days to complete, includes 52 Hollywood names and features La Femme’s, “Tu t’en lasses,...

Exclusive: Svetlana Efremova (The Americans) has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming fourth season of Apple TV+’s space drama series For All Mankind.
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. The series presents an aspirational world where NASA astronauts, engineers and their families find themselves in the center of extraordinary events seen through the prism of an alternate history timeline — a world in which the Ussr beats the US to the moon.
The third season shifted the action to the early ’90s with a race to a new planetary frontier: Mars. The Red Planet became the new front in the Space Race not only for the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but also an unexpected new entrant with a lot to prove and even more at stake.
