Holden has released a TV ad for Volt, its new long-range electric car, that challenges the idea that the General Motors-owned brand is “just about large cars”.
The ad sees Holden move away from the ‘Go better’ positioning it launched in 2008.
Jeffrey Darling directed the spot, which was created by Ajf Partnership.
Holden marketing director Simon Carr said the ad came off the back of consumer research that found that car buyers were not aware of the changes Holden has been making to its product portfolio.
“We saw that despite revitalising our portfolio over the past 18 months, some car buyers weren’t aware of the change we’d been making to our line up,” he said. “Holden Volt really signifies that change. It offers exciting new technology that buyers may not associate with the Holden brand and what better way to show how Holden is changing than bringing to...

London — A judge has sent a cast member of the "Harry Potter" films to prison for taking part in rioting that flared across England last summer.
Judge Simon Carr sentenced Jamie Waylett, who played Hogwarts bully Vincent Crabbe in six of the films, to two years in jail.
Prosecutors said Waylett was part of a small gang that took part in the riots in north London on Aug. 8.
A jury at London's Wood Green Crown Court found Waylett guilty Tuesday of violent disorder, but acquitted him of another charge of intending to destroy or damage property with a fire bomb he was holding.
The 22-year-old had already admitted handling a bottle of stolen Champagne from a supermarket during the riots.
Waylett has a previous conviction for growing marijuana.

Chicago – Clive Owen is an immensely charismatic actor, though he seems to fare better in a world without children. His best roles either place him an ensemble of fellow adults (as in “Gosford Park” and “Sin City”) or require him to protect a baby too young to be much of a conversationalist (as in “Children of Men” or “Shoot ‘Em Up”).
In the failed Oscar bait drama “The Boys Are Back,” Owen plays Simon Carr, a recently widowed father who’s forced to care for his two sons, moody teen Harry (George MacKay, looking like Rupert Grint’s stand-in) and pint-sized brat Artie (insufferable Nicholas McAnulty). The film basically amounts to a Robin Williams heart-warmer minus the shtick, with Owen as the anti-conformist goofball who raises his children exactly as he pleases, much to the chagrin of every uptight female he encounters along the way.

Whip It: "Whip It is exactly what you think it is. There's no move that isn't telegraphed, no cliché that isn't exploited, no trope that isn't mined, no plot line that isn't predictable. Ellen Page plays Bliss, the nerdy misfit in a podunk Texas town where pageantry is, like, the most important thing ever. She and her friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) bide their time working at a local diner, dreaming of better things. Everything Bliss's parents (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern) want for her, she hates. Everything she wants, they either don't understand or disapprove of. One night she and Pash sneak out and see a live roller derby match. Bliss falls in love with it, tries out, makes the team and becomes one of the Hurl Scouts. She struggles to learn the ropes, competes against their rivals, meets a boy, clashes with her parents, saves the day a few times,...

But even though fatherhood has never been his strong suit Joe takes on his task with gusto, teaching his sons about living life with a passion, with all the bumps along the way.

.The Boys Are Back. is a fine, understated drama about familial loss that never resorts to being overly maudlin with Clive Owen showing his softer side in a role of a father forced to deal with his young son after his wife passes away. In a tone-setting opening sequence, we see Clive Owen.s Joe Warr driving down the beach with onlookers screaming at him because he.s letting his son sit on the hood of the car. This sum.s up Joe.s more risk-taking ideas of parenting after his wife.s death and what follows is a protracted flashback letting us know how they got there. Based on Simon Carr.s memoir novel .The Boys Are Back in Town., Joe Warr...

Single fathers (whether widowed, divorced or surrogate) raising sons have been an obsessive subject of the cinema since Chaplin's The Kid nearly 90 years ago. Captains Courageous was such a tale and so, arguably, is Citizen Kane. Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar playing a dedicated single father in Kramer vs. Kramer and Viggo Mortensen may emulate him this year for The Road. Tom Hanks has played the part at least twice (Sleepless in Seattle, Road to Perdition), for laughs, tears and excitement.
The appeal resides in two, now increasingly questioned, assumptions. The first is that mothers have duties, responsibilities and inherent skills that make loving, caring for and rearing children a natural activity that scarcely needs remarking on. The second is a traditional perception that there's something unnatural, even farcical, about fathers performing domestic tasks and giving more than a few minutes of quality time to their children when they're not out there hunting and gathering.

Clive Owen is a very clever man indeed. Easy on the eyes, disarmingly charming, and of a great mind when it comes to picking a savvy project, Owen was within an inch of the iconic black tuxedo when the Bond franchise decided it has best drag itself into the 21st century. Having enjoyed a career littered with high-profile projects realized by above-average filmmakers, the Academy Award nominated British thesp has somehow managed to consistently hide the fact that he's only got two expressions: nobly harried (as seen in King Arthur, Children of Men, The International) and effortlessly cool (see for reference Inside Man, Shoot 'Em Up, Duplicity). However, here under the under the direction of Shine helmer Scott Hicks, Owen for the first time reveals previously unseen depths and a curious vulnerability that suggests there may yet be untapped range behind those come-to-bed eyes and wry, sexy smile.

Clive Owen plays dad in an insufferably cutesy film about single parenthood
If you could order a heart-tugging movie about a widower single dad from the Boden catalogue, accessorised with emotional moments purchased online at johnlewis.com, it might look like this excruciatingly artificial and prettified film, on which lies a 98-tog duvet of middlebrow good taste. Directed by Scott Hicks, who made Shine, it is adapted from the bestselling 2001 memoir by British author and journalist Simon Carr about bringing up two boys alone when his wife died. It is, however, adapted freely enough to count as a soft-focus work of romantic fiction. Not one single thing, for one single moment, looks real or sincere – not the elaborately designed "mess" in the widower dad's neglected kitchen, not the golden sunlit exterior of his picturesque, rambling Australian house, not the hassled-yet-gorgeous blonde single mum in the long-sleeved woollen cardy that the widower dad later meets,...

Clive Owen suited up in London last night for a special screening of The Boys Are Back with his costar Natasha Little and their director Simon Carr. The film hit theaters here in America last November, but it's about to debut on the big screen in England this Friday. In the run-up to its release, Clive has been doing another round of press discussing what it's like playing a father while being one in real life. He recently opened up again about how his two daughters, Hannah and Eve, are unimpressed with his star status. Clive said, "If anything they're very disdainful. Hannah's favourite phrase at the moment is 'If only they could see what you're really like.' . . . They think I'm a joke. A friend of my 12-year-old showed her some magazine and went, 'Your Dad's on this list, and that's weird.' And I agreed with her." Hannah...

Clive Owen's latest movie couldn't be further removed from the suave, gun-happy action flicks he's been churning out in the past few years. Based on the memoirs of Australian sports writer Simon Carr, The Boys Are Back tells the tale of an absent father who is forced to raise his young son after the death of his wife while also trying to reconnect with a child from a previous marriage. The struggles of single parenting and the debilitating effects of grief and loss are chronicled in a refreshingly unmawkish and realistic way and Owen has rarely been on better form. Glen Ferris spoke to the star about the responsibility he felt for the role and his real-life parenting skills...

The Hurt Locker (Summit Entertainment) Absorbing character study follows the leader (Jeremy Renner) of a bomb squad unit in Iraq and his growing addiction to the adrenaline-fueled life and death edge that he and his men must walk on a daily basis. Director Kathryn Bigelow, an unheralded great filmmaker for nearly two decades, has finally hit paydirt with this gut-wrenching examination of war as drug, as opposed to hell. That said, The Hurt Locker is 2/3 of a great movie that takes a wild left turn in a subplot involving Renner’s character and that of a local boy to whom he takes a shine, and never quite recovers its momentum. In spite of that hiccup, it remains one of the best films of 2009 and, thus far, the finest cinematic exploration of America’s war in the Middle East. Also available on Blu-ray disc, in...

Clive Owen Gets Back

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.
It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house...

Scott Hicks returns to the South Australian sun for his latest film The Boys Are Back, and echos his greatest commercial triumph, the David Helfgott biopic Shine, with this family in transition drama. Clive Owen leads the film as a recently widowed sports writer and father to two boys, Artie (Nicholas McAnulty) who lives with him in Australia and Harry, his child from a previous marriage who is ensconced at an English boarding school, played by George MacKay. While this road has been walked before Hicks and Owen combine to create a poignant film which maintains an original voice despite the crowded arena.

The Boys Are Back opens with Joe (Clive Owen) blasting through the surf of an undisclosed beach in his Land Rover Discovery, kicking up water and sand as he clips along at a rather impressive speed. He gleefully laughs, then we see the trunk of the SUV, adorned with Joe’s son, who of course thinks this is great fun. As soon as the son entered the picture, I became white knuckled, and fretted over the safety of the actor portraying Joe’s son. I never really recovered from that scene, and kind of despised Joe throughout the movie. That makes is rather difficult to be sympathetic to his plight.
Joe is a sports writer at an Australian newspaper, and is happily married with a seven year old son, Artie (Nicholas McAnulty). He travels frequently for work and is somewhat of an absentee father. His wife Katy (played by Laura Fraser...

Atlanta – Sometimes human tragedy hits dramatically, but other times it subtly, imperceptibly, alters the intrinsic fibers of everyday life in undetectable ways. That is the premise behind Scott Hicks’ film “The Boys Are Back.” It is the story not of death, but of the strategy human beings devise to cope, to defend and to protect themselves against pain and loss. And though it sometimes reveals the distasteful, ugly ways in which people interact while coping with tragedy, it is also a beautifully shot and truthful portrayal of human frailties and their reactions to loss.
At the center of one family’s tragedy is a father named Joe (Clive Owen). He is a parent to two sons, each one from a different marriage – a British expatriate who followed his pregnant mistress to Australia where he divorced his British first wife, married the mistress Katy, and made a fresh start with his new family.

Scott Hicks: One Of The Boys
By
Alex Simon
Scott Hicks made his bones as a filmmaker the old-fashioned way, paying his dues as a crew member during the Australian film industry’s birth in the 1970s. Born in Uganda March 4, 1953, and raised in Kenya, England and finally Australia, Hicks worked his way up to assistant director for soon-to-be big names such as Peter Weir and Bruce Beresford before moving into directing industrial films and documentaries for television. Hicks didn’t direct his first feature, Freedom, until 1982, and had to wait for his second, in 1996, to put him on the A-list. Shine was the true story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, and his battle with mental illness. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won a Best Actor statuette for Geoffrey Rush, who played Helfgott as an adult.

Hollywood has found Clive Owen's niche. It's tough-minded thrillers such as "Sin City," "The International" and "Shoot 'em Up" and upscale dramas such as "Duplicty" and "Closer." He hasn't broken into comedy yet (except for a few cameos here and there), but with his latest release, "The Boys Are Back," he's definitely showing a more emotional side.Based on the Simon Carr non-fiction novel of the same name, "Boys" centers on a British sportswriter living in Australia who is struggling with raising his two boys after the unexpected passing of his second wife. A hard-drinking, sports-loving lad learns to be a father and a man after his wife’s freak death in The Boys Are Back, a middling drama based on Simon Carr’s memoir. The film makes good use of the vulnerability lurking just underneath Clive Owen’s rugged male-model good looks; his big, sad eyes and effortless charisma make him a natural to play sensitive hunks. Not surprisingly, Boys works much better as an Owen vehicle than a movie—it’s a great, meaty part in a decidedly less-than-great film. Owen plays a successful British sportswriter in Australia who maintains a ...

It's been a while since Clive Owen's had to carry a movie on his broad shoulders, and in the upcoming Scott Hicks film The Boys are Back, he's front-and-center with nary a gun or glamorous love interest at his disposal. In a more intimate turn, Owen plays sportswriter Joe Warr, who struggles to raise both his six-year-old son (Nicholas McAnulty) and a teenage son from an earlier marriage (George MacKay) after his wife dies of cancer.
Adapted from Simon Carr's memoir, The Boys are Back espouses Carr's philosophy of always saying yes to your children, and Owen says it caused him to examine his own relationship with his daughters, Hannah and Eve. In a conversation with Movieline last week in Los Angeles, Owen opened up about his cinematic and real-life families, the nature of grief, and whether or not he's gearing up to do a sequel with Spike Lee.

Clive Owen amazes me. I'm sure he did some rather mediocre films, but he's quite a good actor and he got a lot of credible, absorbing and powerful performances to prove that. In The Boys Are Back, we are told, to expect a different Clive Owen.

After the last few years, we've grown quite accustomed to Clive Owen as the headlining, slick star, whether that be chowing down carrots and shooting people up, living black and white and dangerous as Dwight, or dealing with a world that no longer has children. What's easy to forget in all of his fame, however, is that the man has more than an irresistible delivery and on-screen charm. He's an actor with subtlety, one whose very presence can change. In films like Closer, that meant a fresh layer of smarminess and sleaze. In The Boys Are Back, it means showing the familial heart underneath the macho exterior.
Based on Simon Carr's novel, Owen stars as Joe Warr - a sports reporter in Australia who is the classic father figure, the loving but slightly absent provider. But when his wife suddenly falls ill and passes away, Joe is forced to...

- An indication that Atom Egoyan's Chloe will most definitely find a competition slot in Venice, Tiff has uncharacteristically went with a foreign English language title as the film festival's opening night selection. The spot usually reserved for a Canadian film went to Jon Amiel's unsold Creation which will have its world premiere on the 10th of September. Today's announcement of 23 titles confirms the a.) red carpet presence and early seat sale interest with names/faces like Matt Damon, Ricky Gervais, Clive Owen and Michael Douglas, b.) the latest from Bruno Dumont, Niki Caro, Neil Jordan and Tim Blake Nelson will not be receiving comp slots in Venice but will be part of the Special Presentations at Tiff instead, and c.) a sampling of adult fair titles (Solitary Man, Valhalla Rising, The Boys Are Back, Mao’s Last Dancer, Moloch Tropical, Cracks) that were perhaps not ready or
