From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.

In recent weeks, writer/director Parker Finn has been assembling the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, and according to Deadline, Finn has just rounded out the cast with the two latest additions. We’ve previously heard that the cast will include Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so they need to get this one into production very soon.

The sequel to 2022’s breakout horror hit Smile has entered production ahead of a release later this year. Here are soe new details about Smile Deluxe…
Smile Deluxe (love that title) has officially started production in Newburgh, New York. The follow-up to 2022’s Smile was virtually guaranteed when the first film came out of nowhere to become one of that year’s success stories, grossing almost $220m from a $17 production budget.
Considering that Paramount were considering simply putting the film straight onto its streaming platform, Smile’s incredible success became a key moment in that year’s shifting narrative regarding the value of theatrical runs for films of all shapes and sizes. Of course, that success also meant that a sequel was inevitable, and the project was fast-tracked into development with director Parker Finn returning to helm the next film in the series as part of a long-term deal he signed with Paramount.

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Writer/director Parker Finn is gearing up to head into production on a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and now she has a co-star. Deadline reports that Scott is being joined in the cast by Lukas Gage, whose previous credits include episodes of Euphoria, The White Lotus, You, and the soon-to-wrap-up Fargo season 5. I first saw Gage in the Blumhouse horror production Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss.
Details on the characters Scott and Gage will be playing in Smile 2 have not been revealed. Plot details are also being kept under wraps.
Smile was based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept (watch it Here), which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category.

Smile was a surprise hit for Paramount last year, grossing $217 million worldwide; Not bad for a film which was originally intended for a streaming release. The studio is clearly ready for more, as they’ve announced that they’ve slated Smile 2 for an October 18, 2024 release.
Given the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there’s only so far development on Smile 2 can proceed, but Paramount wanted to nail down that release date nonetheless. Parker Finn will once again return to direct, and although he purposefully left the door open for a sequel, he said last year that he wouldn’t want to repeat himself.
“I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile,” Finn said. “There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another, wanted to put in the movie,...

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) was originally intended to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service, but it scored so highly at a test screening that the decision was made to give it a theatrical release. That decision really paid off, as the film earned over $200 million at the global box office. Of course, Paramount is hoping for a Smile sequel now – and they might get one soon, as Finn has just signed a multiyear first-look deal with the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as part of this deal Finn is expected to write, produce and direct features in the horror genre. The studio would love a Smile sequel but it’s not clear what Finn’s next movie will be.

Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin) plays a therapist who believes she’s being haunted by a sinister curse in this chilling horror from debut writer-director Parker Finn. The plot may be overly familiar, but Smile scores highly when it comes to scares and atmosphere and is likely to become a word-of-mouth hit.
Bacon plays Dr Rose Cotter, an emergency psych ward therapist who has successfully compartmentalised her own trauma with regard to a family tragedy. One day, a terrified young woman (Kindred Spirits’ Caitlin Stasey) appears in her office, relating a story about how she saw a man commit suicide right in front of her, and ever since then she’s been pursued by a sinister entity who smiles at her from the bodies of other people.

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile left the door wide open for a sequel – and given that the Paramount release earned over 200 million at the global box office, you have to imagine that the studio has already been asking for a sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Finn confirmed that Smile was originally going to skip theatres and go right to Paramount+ until it scored well at a test screening, and discussed how he would approach making a sequel. If one were to be made.
When asked if he has thought about making a Smile sequel that picks up right where the first movie left off, Finn said, “I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile. There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another,...

I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with the writer/director of Smile, Parker Finn, and ask him all about his film’s massive success. Because there are few films that have come along and taken the horror world by storm like Smile has, remaining a box office contender well after its opening, in an era where films simply die off. I also grilled him about whether or not we’d be getting a sequel.

Having earned over 200 million at the global box office, writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile has now been given a digital release and is also available to watch on the Paramount+ streaming service in the US and Canada. With a new stage of release comes a new piece of promotion, as Paramount has unveiled a featurette that looks into the casting of Sosie Bacon (Charlie Says) as the film’s heroine. That featurette, which has a running time just under 2 minutes, can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Major spoilers for "Smile" follow.
Horror movies often explore the fear and discomfort that arise from difficult subjects. Some, of course, do so more successfully than others. Unfortunately, writer-director Parker Finn's debut feature, "Smile," tries and fails to explore mental health issues with any nuance or sensitivity. The film concerns a string of mysterious suicides that might actually be caused by an evil entity that stalks its victims with a large smile on its face. However, because of an overreliance on jump scares and a lack of respect for people with mental illnesses, you may not be sporting the same expression when you leave the theater.
Most of the characters in "Smile" can be ranked based on how much empathy they show and how much ableism they exhibit. That said, the film doesn't show much empathy itself, and even goes so far as to use ableist language for comic relief.

From Gwynplaine’s disfigured visage in 1928’s The Man Who Laughs to Jack Torrance’s hideous grin in The Shining, and even more recently Pennywise’s leering grimace in It, the smile has played a longstanding and often terrifying role in horror cinema. So why not make a whole movie based around that stretching of the facial muscles, which can become a death’s-head rictus just as easily as an expression of happiness?
Writer/director Parker Finn seems to have hit upon that very notion with his feature film debut, Smile, which is an expansion of Finn’s 2020 short film, “Laura Hasn’t Slept.” The result is a movie that sustains a remarkably unnerving aura of dread and claustrophobia throughout its nearly two-hour running time and provides some genuinely terrifying sequences, even if it pads itself with a number of jump scares and borrows liberally from several other significant horror outings.

Plot: After a traumatic event occurs with a patient, a doctor begins to experience a series of horrific occurrences.
Review: The trailer for the horror flick Smile wasn’t a great way to sell the film – well, that was my reaction after seeing it. After all, we’ve seen movies like Truth or Dare and Wish Upon that offer a fun premise and squander it with a mediocre finished project. However, the Parker Finn-directed feature is a slight surprise. The strange story of traumatic events seemingly haunting a doctor works far better than expected. You will find horror tropes galore, dream sequences, jump scares, and jarring noises at times, but somehow it manages to entertain. Perhaps the filmmaker wanted to push those familiar moments into something more competently made. Frankly, it made me smile.

Parker Finn’s disquieting debut Smile transforms a congenial gesture into a threat. Lots of horror movies are about trauma. Some attempt to inflict it, but few explore and exploit it as thrillingly as Parker Finn’s feature directorial debut “Smile.” It’s not just smart, it’s not just skillful: It makes you unconsciously plead out loud in the theater for the characters to not do that, not to go in there, and just generally not, for the love of god. Even a hardened horror fan can easily get swept up in the the film’s tension.
“Smile” stars Sosie Bacon (“Mare of Easttown”) as Rose Cotter, a therapist working at a hospital that treats people in severe emotional distress. She’s been running herself ragged for weeks, barely sleeping, when her newest patient arrives. It’s a young woman who watched a man brutally bludgeon himself to death one week prior, and she says she’s seeing a mysterious entity smiling at her wherever she goes.

After its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, the final trailer for "Smile" has been released. Yes, it is still full of creepy Snapchat-esque smiles, which you might be getting tired of seeing. However, this trailer appears to be showing more of the film's actual plot.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this new trailer is the elaboration of a mysterious yet intriguing subplot. The beginning of the trailer shows our main character Rose (Sosie Bacon) talking to an inmate named Robert (Rob Morgan), who has some sort of connection to the sinister smiling terrors she's been experiencing. It turns out that he's witnessed the exact same occurrences but somehow survived the encounter. Given how he's currently locked up, it's not hard to assume that he was able to temporarily escape it through some sort of crime, although with Rose's appearance, that refuge won't last long.

Recently released from prison, Byron (Quinton Aaron) has secured a probationary placement at his step-brother’s family farm. Working for widower Beth (Amy Pietz) and her two daughters, Eliza (Gillian Zinser) and Julia (Nicole Scimeca), Byron has something of a rude awakening when he realises just how much work is involved in a farm’s day-to-day operations. His sponsor Josh, a lawyer, isn’t around much, so it’s left to a skeptical and overworked Beth to show him the ropes. Meanwhile, Paulie (Marcus Henderson), Byron’s friend from prison, tempts him with an easier and eminently more appealing alternative.
From first-time writer-director Ben Caird, a British-American brought up in London, Halfway has similarly spent time being developed on both sides of the Atlantic. Originally envisioned as the story of a UK national transplanted to the States for rehabilitation, the script evolved over time to focus more...

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.

New Year's Eve has a popular setting at the movies, providing the backdrop for romance, drama, comedy, horror and more. There is something about ringing in the New Year that raises the stakes and sets the tone for life changing events, and it's against this setting that "Liars All," the feature debut of writer/director Brian Brightly plays out. Starring genre fave Sara Paxton ("The Innkeepers," "Shark Night 3D," "Last House On The Left") and "90210" stars Matt Lanter and Gillian Zinser, the thriller follows a group of young people who start playing a dangerous game on New Year's Eve that winds up with someone dead, and a killer on the loose. In this exclusive clip, we see the opening stages of the game and how just a slight bit of peer pressure already starts to push things into uncomfortable territory. "Liars All" will be available on demand starting June 21st.

One of Liam’s lovely ladies literally took a bullet for him this week — but who?
Arielle Kebbel told me the Jan. 21 episode of 90210 was worth waiting through the hiatus, but I really think she undersold just how crazy it was. Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Vanessa joined forces to rescue Liam (Matt Lanter) and his beautiful hair, and while the mission was successful, it may have cost one of them more than they bargained for. Dun, dun, dun!
The girls broke into Ashley’s home and found an entire wall of Liam pictures — they actually filmed on location in my apartment — as well as evidence leading them to the basement of the Offshore, where Liam was being held. “Who’s the psycho skank now?” Vanessa asked, to which I thought, “Eh… still you, kind of.”

More cast shakeups are in store for "90210" Season 5: In addition to the exit of series regular Gillian Zinser, who played Ivy on the soap for three years, the show is also getting rid of Justin Deeley, who recurred during Season 4 as Naomi's on-and-off boyfriend Austin.
According to TVLine, Deeley will be written out in the Season 5 premiere, although a rep says the "door is still open for him to reappear in future episodes." So there's at least a little good news to go along with the bad -- it doesn't sound like Austin's getting killed off or anything. Unless "90210" pulls a Denny/"Grey's Anatomy" in a few seasons.
There's another silver lining -- Josh Zuckerman, who plays Max, will recur heavily during Season 5, which probably means that he and Naomi will heat up now that he's called off his wedding. Trevor Donovan will also be back for at least...
