Disney normally finds itself at the top of the box office rankings, thanks to its ownership of well-known franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, but last year was an exception. Recently, Deadline claimed that Disney was involved in four of the top five box office bombs of 2023. The company had numerous setbacks that caused its fortunes to plummet. However, The Marvels was one of the most surprising misfires.
The Marvels
Who could have predicted that Brie Larson’s last MCU outing would end in a financial letdown, causing more of a tremor than even the Dceu’s The Flash?
Yes, you read that right. As unbelievable as it may seem, Nia DaCosta’s flick endured a staggering net loss of $237 million, outdoing the Ezra Miller starrer. Speaking about the latter, it even sprinted away from the spotlight with a $155 million shortfall.

Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting more female-led superhero flicks to highlight the powerful women of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a world where male superheroes predominate. However, recent reports have suggested that the future of such projects could very well be at risk, making fans frustrated and disappointed.
Teyonah Parris’ character Monica Rambeau would have had her own solo MCU series if Brie Larson’s The Marvels had not been met with such dismal critical reception. Although Monica Rambeau made a fleeting appearance in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels (2023), the character made her official debut in Disney+’s WandaVision.

Teyonah Parris didn't feel the "hate" aimed at 'The Marvels'.The 36-year-old star portrayed Monica Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film that flopped badly at the box office but confessed that the lack of press activity for the movie due to the SAG-AFTRA strike last year meant she was shielded from the negativity.Teyonah told IGN: "I can't say that I really felt the hate because we were in a very disconnected time."I was surrounded by people who were excited for me, people who wanted and were waiting to see me and these other women get up here and kick butt. So I felt a lot of love."Parris teamed up with director Nia DaCosta for 'The Marvels' after the pair had worked on the 2021 horror film 'Candyman' together and she enjoys the collaborative relationship they have. She explained: "I love Nia's mind and how it works.

Helldivers 2 is one of the most popular live service titles online at the moment. This game is not unique, but it does everything perfectly. With this perfection and continuous support from developers, it has reached incredible heights of popularity. Then there’s Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, the latest game in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy. This game is popular thanks to its brand and fanbase.
Both of these games do what they do incredibly well. People who have purchased these games are no doubt very happy with what they got. Both of these games are incredibly successful and satisfying to play, but one of them comes out as a clean winner, despite having a huge flaw.

“The Marvels” may have been Marvel Studios biggest flop—grossing only $207 million worldwide, the lowest of any Marvel film ever— but now that it’s available on Disney+ and DVD, its co-star Teyonah Parris is urging fans who never saw it in theaters to give it a chance and make up their own minds.
Released during the actor’s strike on November 10, which only ended just as the film was opening up, Parris, who plays Captain Monica Rambeau and the rest of the cast— Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms.

Teyonah Parris has come out in support of her first Marvel Cinematic Universe outing, The Marvels, which has currently landed on Disney+. The film had a very tumultuous run at the box office, being Marvel’s first proper financial dud in theatres, grossing $199.7 million worldwide (according to The Numbers) against a budget of $270 million.

Having overall success throughout her Marvel career, Brie Larson came up with The Marvels in 2023, in an attempt to replicate the incredible success of Captain Marvel’s first solo outing. Unfortunately, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani’s movie made history for all the wrong reasons, as it broke the record set by The Incredible Hulk in 2008 for the worst opening weekend in MCU history.

Actor Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambeau in The Marvels, says she didn’t know who else was in her post-credits scene until after the film came out.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for The Marvels’ post-credits scene if you haven’t seen it yet.
Increasingly, Marvel movies have begun to resemble a patchwork quilt of live-action performances and CGI elements, with backgrounds, costumes and even entire characters added long after cameras have stopped rolling.
Case in point: The Marvels’ post-credits sequence, in which Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau wakes up in an alternate reality in which her mother is still alive. Oh, and also, the X-Men as we knew them from the 2000s films exist here.
Parris’ reaction when she’s unexpectedly reunited with her mother is emotional stuff, as you’d expect from an actor of her calibre.

Xbox is missing out yet again with another game, and it’s not just a filler title but possibly the biggest game of the year: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The timed exclusivity deal that PlayStation has with the developer and publisher is a major blow to the rival company and is a clear indication that regardless of how powerful their hardware can be, it is futile without games to play with. Xbox Legend Parris Lilley weighs in on the negative impact of exclusivity on the gaming community in general and hopes it goes away for good.
PlayStation and Nintendo excel in the same aspect, which is their exclusive games. While Xbox may have a more powerful console, the quality of their first-party games is not comparable to that of their competitors, which is holding them back.

When Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was first announced, many Xbox users were disappointed, knowing it would be a PlayStation exclusive. Considering it’s developed by Square Enix, many would have thought there would be no issue with launching it on all platforms available. After all, previous Final Fantasy titles are on the platform, as are other Square Enix games.
One outspoken Xbox diehard, Parris Lilly, offered his two cents on the matter. But it seems he’s contradicting his previous statements, a fact that many fans and followers are not willing to simply gloss over.

The critique comes from X user BlackMaskGR, who posted three pictures directed at Parris. That’s a pretty mean-spirited accusation, but it is not entirely misplaced when one looks at the pictures in the post.

While The Marvels may not have been the blockbuster sequel that Marvel Studios was hoping for, it did contain one element that had fans talking: a cameo by none other than Beast of the X-Men. The reveal was a big surprise to audiences, even Teyonah Parris, who was actually in the scene but had no idea she would be sharing the screen with the iconic X-Men character.
In The Marvels‘ mid-credits scene, Monica Rambeau (Parris) wakes up in a hospital bed to find an alternate version of her mother as well as X-Men’s Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast. Although the character was a digital creation this time around, he was voiced by Kelsey Grammer, who played the role in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
While chatting with Et’s Ash Crossan, Parris revealed she was just as surprised as everyone else when Beast appeared on screen.

“The film ‘The Marvels’ marked the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a box office disappointment for both Marvel Studios and Disney. While audiences appreciated the chemistry among the main trio of Larson, Parris, and Vellani, the movie faced significant criticism in other areas.
One of the primary points of contention was the portrayal of the main villain, Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton. Although Ashton delivered an impressive performance, the character of Dar-Benn lacked depth, and her motivations for the actions she took remained unclear. Fans were particularly frustrated by the fact that Dar-Benn, armed only with the Quantum Band, appeared to overpower Captain Marvel—a superhero known for her immense strength within the MCU.

‘The Marvels’ was the latest installment in the MCU franchise and the latest box office flop for Marvel Studios and Disney. The movie was praised for the chemistry between the main trio of Larson, Parris, and Vellani, but pretty much every other aspect of the movie was criticized namely the story and the main villain – Dar-Benn played by Zawe Ashton.
It’s not that Zawe didn’t deliver a phenomenal performance, it’s that her character wasn’t really fleshed out and it had dubious motivations for the goals she was trying to achieve. The fans were also infuriated that Dar-Benn seemingly managed to toss Captain Marvel around with nothing but Quantum Band at her disposal, and we do know that Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU.

“The Marvels” didn’t crash and burn at the box office this past weekend due to superhero fatigue. Nor was it the lowest opening weekend in MCU history because fans were rebelling against the female-driven ensemble — the gender makeup in North America over the opening weekend was 61% male and 39% female.
Instead, the film limped to a $46.1 million opening weekend due to a number of factors including declining trust in the Marvel brand, all of which speak to an existential challenge for Marvel Studios: Make Marvel special again.
Superhero movies within the Marvel and DC universes are now as execution-dependent as other franchise titles. The low opening for the Brie Larson-starring sequel shows that an MCU movie is no longer an automatic must-see event, meaning fans won’t show up just because it’s “the next Marvel movie.” That’s a problem, considering many of Marvel’s upcoming titles,...

“The Marvels” is getting ready to take flight at the box office, but it won’t be as sky-high as its predecessor “Captain Marvel” and many of its fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
The latest MCU adventure has made $6.6 million in previews at the box office. “The Marvels” is expected to make between $60 million and $65 million in its opening this weekend. It’s a far cry from Brie Larson’s first MCU outing as Captain Marvel, which opened to $153 million in 2019 from $20.7 million in Thursday previews. That movie, which ended up crossing the $1 billion mark, had the added bonus of releasing between “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” and was the first female-led MCU film.
The “Captain Marvel” sequel is also expected to fall below this year’s two previous Marvel movies, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which made $104 million and $118 million in their opening,...

One of Hollywood’s hallmarks — talent promotion and publicity — is back in full swing as actors and studio marketers reunite.
By mid-day Thursday, less than 24 hours after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, Tom Hiddleston was booking a TV appearance in the U.K to promote the season to finale of Marvel Studios’ series Loki. He’ll then travel to New York City, where he and The Marvels star Brie Larson are slated to appear on The Tonight Show. Also expect to see photos of Larson and her co-stars Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris surprise fans when showing up at screenings of their new superhero movie, which opens everywhere this weekend. Parris appeared at the charity BoxLunch charity in Los Angeles Thursday, while Vellani has quickly been booking media interviews to support The Marvels.
While the strike may not have ended in time for these actors to anchor glitzy premieres, any effort is better than none.

Face front, true believers! This year we’ve had three multiplex visits to the realm of the “Distinguished Competition”, so you didn’t think the MCU would end 2023 with treks into Quantumania and Knowhere (hangout of those Galaxy Guardians)? Oh no, Smilin’ Stan wouldn’t want the fifteenth anniversary of the Studio to conclude without one more adventure. And it’s a sequel to a 2019 film that introduced the cosmic Carol Danvers, while also being somewhat of an expansion of her saga. That’s because she’s not completely going solo as she’s joined by two characters that made their heroic debuts on Disney+. Together this titanic trio is on a mission to save us all as The Marvels.

This far into the MCU, it can be hard to know and remember which projects connect to each other and how. Well, the good news about “The Marvels” is, you don’t need to know as much going in as you might for other projects.
In fact, at a base level, you only need to have seen three other MCU installments. And that’s because, though the movie is only a sequel, it brings together three characters. “The Marvels” unites Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) when their powers become entangled.
All three women have light-based powers, but don’t worry, Captain Rambeau will succinctly explain how their powers differ in the movie. We’re just here to get you prepped. So, here’s what you need to watch to understand what’s happening in “The Marvels.”

Will The Marvels reverse Marvel’s recent run of meh?
Not according to the early critic reviews. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe title is getting rather mediocre notices with a just-out-of-the-gate Rotten Tomatoes score in the mid-50s, which would make it one of the weakest MCU titles ever.
But what’s interesting is that many reactions to The Marvels are also intensely polarized — with some insisting the film is delightful fun while others are calling the movie “abject misery,” “turgidly mindless,” and “a new low” for Marvel. In general, the more traditional news outlets tend to skew against the film (Hollywood Reporter‘s review excluded) while some of the more fan-focused entertainment sites are much more positive. Overall, it seems like the more one has invested in watching all the previous MCU movies and TV shows, the more likely they are to dig The Marvels — and understand it.

In an era where the Marvel Cinematic Universe frequently shuttles between multiverse escapades and interplanetary conflicts, Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels emerges as a breath of fresh air, eschewing bombast for a nuanced exploration of its characters. DaCosta, alongside writers Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, anchors the superhero spectacle in the tangible and personal, making the extraordinary feel accessible and grounded.
On a desolate planet, Kree warrior Dar-Benn (Ashton) finds a bracelet, one you might be familiar with if you watch the Disney+ Ms. Marvel series. She believes this bracelet will solve her planet’s environmental issues. At home in New Jersey, Kamala Khan (Vellani) daydreams about fighting crime with Carol Danvers (Larson), aka Captain Marvel, when the bracelet on her arm — the same one Dar-Benn found — begins to glow. Suddenly, she gets blown back into a closet door.

Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is a grounding contribution to a gluttonous and increasingly perplexing Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The conventional film pulsates with a quiet force propelled by the sincere bond between its three protagonists. Brie Larson reprises her role as Carol Danvers, the amnesiac pilot from the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel; Teyonah Parris is Monica Rambeau, whom viewers saw in WandaVision; and relative newcomer Iman Vellani is Kamala Khan, the star of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. DaCosta’s kinetic direction and intimate storytelling style lets audiences see this trio — whose lives collide in unexpected ways — from new and entertaining vantage points.
The Marvels picks up where Captain Marvel left off. Flashbacks in the first half hour provide a broad framework, but it’s worth revisiting the disjointed predecessor — in which Danvers vowed to end the genocidal war between the Kree and Skrulls — for firmer footing. DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and...

Since Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel first received her own movie in 2019, the character of Carol Danvers has been unfairly given the title every woman gets at least once in her life: boring. Presumed “fans” trolled every area of the internet to complain about the character and, even before the movie arrived, how bad the finished product would be. That wasn’t the case, but it emphasized the fact that Captain Marvel and her films have always been unfairly judged. It’s a somewhat similar route taken here and all of that unnecessarily stacks the deck against “The Marvels,” a film already being put out during both the SAG-AFTRA strike — when its amazing cast can’t say anything about it — and a bit of a lull for MCU films in general.

After sinking at least 100 hours of my life over the last 15 years into watching all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and some of the shows (to say nothing of any subsequent rewatches), there is something truly discomfiting about sitting in a massive IMAX theater to watch the newest Marvel film and the best scribble I can make in my critic’s notebook is “???”
At this point, it comes with the territory. Anyone unable to watch every single piece of Marvel-made content before catching the latest project must resign themselves to not getting every reference these days, or even most of them. We’re talking a staggering array of 33 feature films, 12 series (including over 400 total episodes), various post-credits scenes, a handful of short films, and more.
Tellingly, the most pleasurable moments in Nia DaCosta’s “The Marvels” don’t hinge on the audience having an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Marvel.

"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" are rightfully the talk of the town these past weeks, as both movies have been filling up multiplexes in a clear sign that the American theatrical experience isn't quite dead yet. While "Barbie" is set to cross the billion dollar mark this weekend and "Oppenheimer" screenings are so full that even Steven Soderbergh apparently couldn't nab a ticket, another movie also proved to be a hit with audiences who stayed home. According to The Wrap's data from Samba TV, Netflix's "They Cloned Tyrone" was the most-streamed movie for the last week of July, reaching more households than any other film on streaming or linear TV.
While Netflix is historically known for less-than-transparent viewership data (an issue that the Hollywood unions on strike are hoping to correct in their fight for streaming residuals), it's worth noting that The Wrap pulled from a much more reliable third-party analytics company.

Teyonah Parris has stepped into plenty of shoes in her career — from “Dear White People” and “Mad Men” to “If Beale Street Could Talk” and, more recently, as Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau. But no shoes quite compare to the mustard yellow, thigh-high boots and chaps she wore as Yo-Yo in Netflix’s new pulpy conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone.”
“The minute I put on all those elements, I felt Yo-Yo,” Parris told Variety at a press junket for the film in late June.
Parris laughed brightly as she recalls slipping into the role — a working girl who teams up with Fontaine (John Boyega), a local dope boy, and her pimp, Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), to expose a government conspiracy that touches every corner of their community, from the barbershop and the beauty salon to the local fried chicken joint.

Teyonah Parris’ decision to wear her natural hair is part of her “very intentional” goal to ensure Black women feel seen on-screen — and in all spaces — just as they are.
Parris, an NAACP Image award winner, has shown up and shown out in every role she’s been cast in, from “Candyman” (2021) to “WandaVision” (2021) to the “Photograph” (2020) and more. And in every role — including those mentioned — and at least for the last decade, she’s made it a point to wear her natural hair along the way.
In Juel Taylor’s “They Cloned Tyrone,” Parris continued her mission.

With the release of every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — due for its 33rd chapter with the release of "The Marvels" — scads of Marvel Comics nerds come out of the woodwork to offer their expertise on the way the movies differ from the comics. The MCU has been generally good about including the broad strokes of a character and their story as they originally appeared on the page, but the finer details are often altered to suit the needs of the movies.
In the movies, for instance, Thanos (Josh Brolin) is a military man concerned with overpopulation and resource allocation, and he feels the only way to solve the problem is to wipe out half the population of the universe. In the comics, Thanos is a more philosophical, nihilistic villain who believes in entropy and is in love with Death (a physical being in Marvel comics). He destroys half...

Netflix's "They Cloned Tyrone" has us seeing double, triple, and even quadruple in the freaky conspiracy-theory film. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani are ready to kick ass in “The Marvels.”
Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for “The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” The film will star Larson in her longstanding role of Carol Danvers while Parris and Vellani make their Marvel Cinematic Universe theatrical debuts, reprising their respective roles of Captain Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel.

What happens when you mix wild conspiracy theories, slick-talking characters, and the retro feel of the Blaxploitation era into one sweeping film? Well, you get the time-defying, genre-bending adventure "They Cloned Tyrone" - which stars John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris as an oddball trio in Juel Taylor's risky directorial debut. Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone is a satirical science-fiction story styled as a Blaxploitation film. Set in the gritty world of The Glen, this odd-throuple comedy stars John Boyega as Fontaine, a small-time drug dealer whose days play out in the same dreary cycle of events: He stumbles out of bed, does a little business, hits the local liquor store, and does whatever he has to do to keep his rivals in check and make sure his customers pay on time.
There’s a grainy quality to the way that Taylor’s feature-length directorial debut has been shot that allows it to stand apart from just about every other Netflix original film. It’s also in the way that the sickly yellow and green lights of the environments that barely brighten the seedy motel rooms and dilapidated homes always seem as if they’re being glimpsed through a fog.

Starting out gritty, this likable film turns into a mystery-comedy thriller and boasts excellent performances from Foxx, John Boyega and Teyonah Parris
Screenwriter Juel Taylor makes his feature directing debut with his own co-written script; it’s an odd, slightly baffling but likable piece of work. It’s a conspiracy mystery-comedy that starts out as a neo-blaxploitation romp or supersmart satire on race and white privilege that you might compare with Get Out or Sorry to Bother You. But then it broadens into something sillier and goofier, almost a kids’ movie. I can imagine it building a cult fanbase by being shown every Christmas Eve on TV, and it’s certainly got three powerhouse performances from Teyonah Parris, Jamie Foxx and John Boyega.
The scene is a deprived African American neighbourhood where people listlessly drink certain branded types of what appears to be alcoholic soda, munch down fried chicken and use chemicals on their hair.

Turn on “They Cloned Tyrone” at a random moment and you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a faithful remake of a Blaxploitation classic. In one early scene, the old-school pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) struts through a sleazy motel wearing a suit whose ridiculousness is matched only by his haircut. ’70s funk blares in the background as he tries to convince his top earner Yo-Yo (Teyonah Paris) to keep turning tricks for him. As she explains that she’s ready to move onto bigger things, the dialogue could be ripped straight from “Coffy” or “Foxy Brown” — until she mentions Bitcoin.
Yo-Yo — who earned her nickname because she keeps coming back after threatening to leave — is convinced that the blockchain revolution is going to be the golden parachute that gets her out of sex work. Ignoring the holes in her financial logic, the scene is a perfect encapsulation...

Back in April, Foxx was hospitalized for what was described, at the time, as a “medical complication.” Reports since then have been murky, with friends and co-stars indicating that Foxx is recovering from his still-unexplained ailment.
According to Boyega, while filming “They Cloned Tyrone”, Foxx entertained the cast and crew with comedy.

“We got three stand up shows that you would normally pay $29.99 for. He gave us that for free, he played the piano, you know, sang some songs, all of that. I don’t need to ever go to one of these shows again,” he joked.
Asked if they’d spoke to Foxx recently,...
