As years go, 2016 has been a rough one. The movie that’s helping me get through it more than any other right now is Beyond the Gates.
[Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for those who haven’t seen Beyond the Gates.]
This is the year that has claimed a number of brilliant and legendary artists. The year of more devastating terror attacks, of police shootings, and of Brexit. Like it or not, this is also the year that saw the election of a new president who has already been a more polarizing figure than any in recent memory. Reports of hate crimes are on the rise. America is irrevocably divided. This year has sucked, is what I’m saying. But Beyond the Gates gives me hope. Beyond the Gates is the movie the country needs right now.

Who says you need to adapt? As some filmmakers look towards newfangled technology for 21st century chills (Friend Request/Unfriended/The Den), writer/director Jackson Stewart scares up some vintage nostalgia with his debut feature, Beyond The Gates. Screw Facebook and Skype. Remember the good old days when people sat around in social groups, and spooked themselves silly with products you’d only find in dumpsters nowadays?
For you younger readers, VHS cassettes used to play movies on film before digital radio waves made physical copies obsolete – but Stewart’s concept dates even myself (not in my 30s yet, so I was part of the DVD uprising). Apparently games used to exist in VHS form, and you could play along with the characters on screen (like Final Destination 3 tried to do with their “Select A Fate” DVD). Well, what if those games became reality, and immersion meant realistic consequences?...

The amount of talent in St. Louis is pretty amazing and it always warms my heart when I hear people outside of St. Louis catching on or getting involved with said talent. Matt Stuertz, who you might remember is film Rwd or via the YouTube webseries, Sixty Second Slashers, has a new film coming out called Tonight She Comes. I just got word across my inbox that it scored its world premiere at Manchester’s Grimmfest! Congrats to Matt! For the rest of you, here’s a teaser trailer and the festival poster. We’ll keep our ears to the ground on this one and keep you up to date. Did I mention that the film’s score is composed by Wojciech Golczewski (We Are Still Here, Beyond the Gates, Late Phases)? Yeah, I’m ready.

I don't know a lot about filmmaker Matt Stuertz (Rwd), but I do know that I love this teaser trailer for his new flick, Tonight She Comes, which we have below. If you love old-school horror trailers, you'll recognize the techniques used. There's a lot of nostalgia thrown around in horror films lately, but this teaser looks genuinely fun. Stuertz wrote, directed, and edited the film, and the original music was composed by Wojciech Golczewski (We Are Still Here, Late Phases, Beyond the Gates) --- which is even more exciting, because Golczewski knows his genre films. Tonight She Comes will be announcing festival dates soon, and I can't wait. What do you think of the teaser?...

Tagline: "Yesterday.. she was chosen. At midnight.. she was sacrificed. This morning.. she was buried. But tonight… Tonight She Comes. Everyone else will die." Matt Stuertz's Tonight She Comes either pays homage to '80s slashers or spoofs them. The film is revenge horror, according to the trailer. In the clip, a woman is murdered, she returns and she is looking to kill her killers. The film stars Nathan Eswine, Larissa White, Jenna McDonald and many others. The film's first trailer is here! The short synopsis talks of a missing girl. Friends search for her near an abandoned cabin. But, something or someone is still lurking in the nearby woods, ready to kill. The film's first trailer offers a brief look at the film. '80s synth haunts the track, from composer Wojciech Golczewski. Meanwhile, portions of the clip have been overlayed with black and white images. A nice looking,...
