Photographer for Magnum, famous for his essay on the Bobby Kennedy Funeral Train journey.
He became interested in photography as a teenager and studied in New York. He joined the army during the Korean War. He was wounded while photographing during combat, and received the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
He attended Ohio University on the G.I. Bill; it was one of the few colleges with a photography program at the time.
