Guillermo del Toro's The Strain returns for season two still struggling with several of its old season one problems...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Bk, NY
I’ve taken a few days cool down before writing this review, mostly because I’m trying as best I can to let the things I dislike about The Strain not cloud those limited aspects I like. That said, it’s still hard work being a fan of it, because of the odd compunction those making this show have for being sloppy and careless.
After a nice diversion written by Guillermo del Toro himself to give Abraham and the Master a backstory that was needed last season, it jumps right back into the action from the season 1 finale. With Abraham pursuing The Master down the hole he went.
Or rather that’s how it’s cut together, but soon it becomes obvious that this is in fact poor editing,...

Three episodes were provided for review purposes.
From day one, The Strain always felt like a bit of an oddly mixed cocktail. A pandemic thriller that attempted to balance ancient monsters with modern medicine, its first season was torn between Midnight Madness craziness and jargon-heavy, scientific rationality, which more often than not left the show feeling bloated, so weighed down by its desire to combine two disparate tones that it didn’t fully succeed in capturing either. The series improved over the course of its freshman run, particularly around the time a strigoi Swat team showed up circa episode 7 – once sharp-toothed vamps start forming military squadrons, there’s really no salvaging your show’s believability, no matter how many grave voice-overs are employed.
Luckily, showrunner Carlton Cuse and creators Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan are aware of this, and the second season of The Strain arrives as an improvement...

Toronto, Ontario. It's a mild spring day in Toronto, but unknowably dark things are happening at the Royal York Hotel. A group of journalists has descended on the filming location for Season 2 of FX's "The Strain," but we can't see what's actually being filmed. Yes, the late-season episode is heavy on spoilers, not that it's really a spoiler to tease that one-or-more of our intrepid heroes have run afoul of the vampire hordes and one-or-more of our intrepid heroes is staging a rescue mission of some sort. That's standard operating procedure on the FX adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's thriller trilogy. The real reason we can't observe filming is one of simple logistics: A pursuit is taking place in the stairwells of the Royal York. Stairwells are tight. The number of reporters isn't tiny. For that reason, we're sitting in a medium-sized ballroom at the Royal York,...

FX has announced that the Season 2 premiere for "The Strain" will be almost exactly one year after the series premiere. Previously set for a nebulous "July" premiere date, the premiere for Season 2 of the FX vampire drama has been set for Sunday, July 12. "The Strain" launched its first season on July 13 last year. And "The Strain" will continue in its regular Sunday 10 p.m. slot. Vaunted as the most-watched new cable drama of 2014, "The Strain" continues to be based on the series of novels from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, with Carlton Cuse as showrunner. With Live+7 data, the first season of "The Strain" averaged 6.28 million viewers, including 3.49 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic. I was on the Toronto set of "The Strain" last month and while Season 1 stuck fairly closely to del Toro and Hogan's first book, it seems that Season 2 will be branching out in potentially dramatic ways,...

FX’s The Strain was one of the more enjoyable shows of last summer, a knowingly ridiculous but still deliciously creepy thriller about the spread of a vampire epidemic through modern New York City. After a crazy cliffhanger of a season finale in which the ancient Master escaped the clutches of vampire hunters including Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) and Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the series will finally be returning at some point this summer, and FX has allowed the first footage from season 2 to escape quarantine (via EW).
Though the first season mostly saw the vampire epidemic spread quietly underground, that’s definitely no longer the case. “We’re going to take back this island one block at a time,” a city councilwoman (fresh face Samantaha Mathis) declares to the human survivors. The Master and his army of strigoi aren’t going to make that easy, but at least she...

FX’s The Strain was one of the summer’s guiltiest pleasures, an immeasurably silly but still compelling thriller about a group of Cdc scientists attempting to stem the flow of a centuries-old vampire epidemic purposely brought to New York by an ancient evil. And though we’ll have to wait until the summer to see where it goes in season 2, FX is ensuring that we keep The Strain in mind by unveiling a new teaser for the series.
It seems early for the network to be promoting The Strain again, but it did market the first season for many months before its summer premiere as well. There’s not much context to the teaser, though if the show can follow through on the promise of depicting a full-on, bloodsuckers-versus-humans battle in the streets of New York, that will already be a step up on season 1, which only mounted a few truly impressive action sequences.

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Logan's FX produced horror The Strain has many good things going for it; however, Ben Hyland's (Zack Goodweather) acting is not one of them. Generally, the directing, the acting, the score, the high production values and the beautiful looking cinematography have been more than enough to keep people tuned in and they far outweigh the bad points that plagued season one. Thusly, it's refreshing to hear that executive producer/showrunner Carlton Cuse has taken affirmative action to up the ante for the hotly anticipated season two, by getting rid of the deadwood. It's harsh, but there really isn't any other way to put it, when the push comes to shove, Goodweather couldn.t act his way out of a paper bag....

The Strain, Season 1, Episode 13, “The Master”
Written by Carlton Cuse & Chuck Hogan
Directed by Phil Abraham
Will return in 2015
Hold on. This episode was promoted as the season finale, and all research online confirms this to be true. But this is not a season finale episode of television. It would’ve been much more effective in the middle of the first season, and even then it would’ve been a rather middling hour. Was anyone really hoping to find out in the season’s last episode whether Eph would relapse and drink again? Was that a payoff someone was counting on? Truth be told, that could almost be considered one of the peaks of the episode. Strap in, guys, this is going to be depressing.
Let’s be clear: nothing happens in the season finale of The Strain. The confrontation with The Master, in an episode entitled “The Master”, amounts...

Warning: this review contains spoilers.
1.11 The Third Rail
My frustration watching this series continues, as it hints it might hit the accelerator pedal before stomping on the brakes instead.
There were at least three points in The Third Rail where it looked for all the world like the narrative and characters would take flight, only for the writers to retreat into the well-worn path of mediocrity. What’s wrong with giving this show some rope? The pace has been far too slow from the outset.
There’s a little development on each of the three narrative threads, but not enough to really justify what screen time was allocated to any of them. The two subplots; Gus coming home and Zack going on an errand, didn’t really go anywhere special.
And, in respect of Zack,...

After live-blogs for "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Following," it's time for the final Hall H panel of Comic-Con 2014. It's Guillermo del Toro and company taking the stage for FX's "The Strain," which will be preceded by a screening on Sunday (July 27) night's episode, which was one of my favorites so far, featuring some jaw-droopingly gross moments, as well as a hilarious sequence for Corey Stoll's wig. Apparently this is the first TV show ever to be paneled in Hall H during its first season. Who knew? Click through for the highlights... 2:37 p.m. Panel time! Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan are introducing our panelists: Ben Hyland, Jack Kesey, Miguel Gomez, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Kevin Durand, Sean Astin (or "The adorable, cuddly Sean Astin," as Guillermo introduces him), David Bradley ("He's open for wedding planning if you need anything," del Toro jokes), Mia Maestro and Corey Stoll.

Important note: These recaps function purely and exclusively in relationship to the TV series. If you’ve read the books, please be mindful of potential story and character spoilers for others in the comments. Ephraim Goodweather (House of Cards’ Corey Stoll, looking awfully James Remar–ian with that toupee) is consumed by his job as chief medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s NYC HQ. He loves his wife Kelly (Natalie Brown) and 11-year-old son Zach (Ben Hyland), but damn if he even knows how to tie a tie or arrive to family counseling on time, let alone be more present at six o’clock dinners. He and Robin Williams’s Daniel Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire might, together, make the perfect man. Except where Hillard summoned heroism from within the pillowy bosom of alter ego Euphegenia, Ephraim exceeds his potential underneath a hazmat suit.Only minutes...

This is the last day of Comic-Con, and they will be closing it out with some big TV panels like Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy and The Strain. Toronto, On. Let's get this out of the way, because you're already thinking it. It's mid-March in a chilly interview room on the Toronto set of FX's "The Strain" and star Corey Stoll is chatting with one of three small roundtables of reporters. We've been talking for at least 15 minutes without addressing the elephant in the room, so I broach the all-important topic: Hair, or augmentation thereof. Stoll's visibility has increased dramatically in recent years and it's not like audiences are unfamiliar with seeing him with tonsorial assistance. His Ernest Hemingway in "Midnight in Paris" featured both a well-adorned head and a mustache that he carried over into NBC's "Law & Order: Los Angeles." That role and his Golden Globe nominated turn in "House of Cards" were recognizably clear-pated, which has already had people scratching their heads about the floppy hair Stoll is sporting in "The Strain." What, I ask Stoll,...

There’s a hint of trepidation any time a new series lands on the small screen. Censorship limitations, fiscal restrictions and an abundance of writers and directors can easily serve as points of distraction for promising concepts.
Sometimes there are just too many chiefs and not enough Indians, and when you’ve got too many chiefs attempting to hold rule over a tribe with the barest of necessities, things can head south in an instant. That’s the law of the land.
Ultimately, the legitimately scintillating concepts tend to succeed, assuming the funds are there to capitalize on and the featuring network is lenient enough to truly push the envelope, if the idea in question calls for the courageous, that is.

What a bunch of babies! Apparently billboards for FX's upcoming "The Strain" featuring some kind of a worm either coming out of, or going into, an eyeball are too much for residents of Hollywood to handle, and they've taken to Twitter to bitch about it.
Okay, so maybe you don't necessarily want to see a close-up of a worm-penetrated eyeball while you're trying to choke down your Egg McMuffin in the morning, but is it really that big of a deal? Well, people need something to tweet about. It can't all be pictures of food and cute cat videos.
And we've heard from some celebs on the Twittersphere regarding "The Strain" billboards. Paranormal Activity 2 star Molly Ephraim herself has spoken out. Ephraim tweeted, "Billboard for ‘The Strain’ or whatever that godforsaken thing is w/ the thing in the eyeball on my street; can I call the Mayor to complain?...
