Professor of philosophy at the University at Buffalo, part of the State University of New York, 1965-1991.
Publisher of "The Humanist" magazine.
He enlisted in the US Army in WWII, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit helped to liberate the Dachau concentration camp.
He earned degrees from NYU and Columbia University.
He was the founder and longtime chairman of the Council for Secular Humanism and the Center for Inquiry.
