Exclusive: Frontières Platform, the genre-focused event run by Fantasia and Cannes’ Marche du Film, returns to the French fest for another edition this year, with 13 projects selected to take part in the showcase, running July 10-11. Scroll down for the full list.
The event is technically taking place physically, as per Cannes’ commitment to staging an in-person industry event in July, but Frontières has informed participants that it does not encourage them to travel during a pandemic and that all pitches will be screened online. If participants do wish to travel to Cannes, however, the event will allow them to do so, and a representative of Frontières will be in attendance, restrictions allowing.
Activities will include the Proof of Concept presentations for projects in the advanced stages of financing, and the Buyers Showcase for films that are in post-production or have recently been completed. Footage will be screened from seven projects,...

Animalistic comes from the directorial team of Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wirklund. A duo whose have decent form when it comes to genre filmmaking. Their previous film, Wither was a nod to the Evil Dead movies; and Laguna was also behind the Superb Swedish winter-set slasher film Blood Runs Cold, one of my favourite films of 2011 (was it really that long ago?). The pair were also in the directors chair for the recent Puppet Master reboot/redux, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich – which is undoubtedly one of the reasons Wild Eye Releasing chose to distribute this particular movie right now… after all, this film, under the title We Are Monsters, originally debuted in 2015 across the rest of the world.

Following its well-received screening at the 2018 Overlook Film Festival, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (written by Bone Tomahawk director S. Craig Zahler) was acquired for North American distribution by Rlje Films. It's been playing the festival circuit and will be getting a Us theatrical and VOD release on August 17th. Having seen the movie at Fantasia, I can say that this movie has some of the most insane and bloody kills ever put on screen, and if you want to see some of that for yourself ahead of August 17th, take a look at the newly released red band trailer:
"The reimagining of the Full Moon Features cult classic stars Thomas Lennon (TV’s “Reno 911!”), Jenny Pellicer (TV’s “Cocaine Godmother”), Nelson Franklin (TV’s “Veep”), Charlyne Yi (This is 40), Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers), and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator). The iconic Udo Kier (Brawl in Cell Block 99) stars as the titular character.

Rlje Films has acquired North American rights to Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, the movie that serves as a reimagining of the 1989 Full Moon Features cult horror pic. Udo Kier toplines the new incarnation that co-stars Thomas Lennon, Jenny Pellicer, Nelson Franklin, Charlyne Yi, Michael Pare and Barbara Crampton. S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk) penned the script and We Are Monsters‘ Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund co-directed.
The pic will now hit theaters in August 2018 via the resurrected Fangoria label after that horror mag was acquired by Cinestate’s Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk. They produced the pic with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and David Liljeblad. Adam Donaghey, Johnathan Brownlee, Wayne Marc Godfrey, Robert Jones, Rick Prince and Red Sanders executive produced along with Charles Band, who was behind the original film.
The plot centers on Edgar (Lennon), recently divorced and reeling, who returns to his childhood home to regroup his life.

A cabin in the woods, a group of kids, and something in the basement. Given the idea that the film is based on Swedish folklore that tells the legend of almost-human creatures living underground, it’s not hard to realise that Wither is an homage to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead. In fact this is such a blatant “homage” it could almost be Evil Dead 4 by any other name!
Ida and Albin are thrilled to be setting off for a fun holiday with their friends to a remote cabin in the vast Nordic woodlands. But their carefree weekend comes unhinged when one of them accidentally unleashes a mysterious and murderous creature trapped in the basement. Worse, under the floorboards lurks an evil from Sweden’s dark past.

Hansel and Gretel Get Baked
Written by David Tillman
Directed by Duane Journey
USA, 2013
Not long after Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton reimagined the fairytale duo for the Twilight generation, Hansel and Gretel Get Baked offers a marginally more laidback interpretation on the fable for those more inclined towards other slacker duos like Jay and Silent Bob or Harold and Kumar. Director Duane Journey trades in traditional Gothic horror sensibilities for a stoned-eye view of suburbia, priding home-grown fantasy over full-blown horror.
If this is squared for the stoner market, then it’s peculiar for the director to take a cautionary tale about the dangers of stepping into a stranger’s house and switch the goodies from candy to marijuana. Twin Peaks star Lara Flynn Boyle plays the wicked witch, whose effort to lure unsuspecting teens into her gingerbread house is rewarded with the succubus-like theft of their youthfulness. When...

Stockholm Syndrome Film, the creators of the movies Madness and Blood Runs Cold (acquired by Bloody Disgusting Selects for a 2012 release) tells us about their newest ultra-violent Swedish horror that's currently in post. Tommy Wiklund and Sonny Laguna both direct Wither from a script they co-developed with David Liljeblad. We're told the film is about a swedish folklore that tells the legend about these creatures, almost human like, living underground. It has been told that if you disturb them, things can go very bad. When a group of friends get together for a weekend in an old deserted house, it doesn't take a lot to awaken what lives underneath the floorboards. Patrik Almkvist, Lisa Henni, Patrick Saxe, Amanda Renberg, Max Wallmo, Jessica Blomkvist, Anna Henriksson, Johannes Brost, Fredrik Dolk, A.R Hellquist, Ingar Sigvardsdotter, Ralf Beck, Sanna Ekman and Julia Knutson all star.

Despite its historically barren filmic landscape, especially when it comes to horror, Sweden is suddenly gaining a reputation for producing some of the coolest (pun intended) horror flicks of recent years – including the international mega-hit that was Let The Right One In. Since that films debut in 2008, Sweden has seen a boom in home-grown horror, most of which has sadly gone straight to VOD/DVD overseas. Now Swedish production company Stockholm Syndrome (very apt) unleash their latest opus Blood Runs Cold on an unsuspecting audience at this years London Film4 Frightfest, with a villain that can only be described as Chud meets Friday the 13th!

Shock Till You Drop is debuting the first trailer for the Swedish slasher film Blood Runs Cold. The clip is very bloody and gruesome. The film follows a young song writer into a remote locale where "a terrifying secret awaits her." That secret looks six feet tall and armed with a large axe, as the trailer tells us. Have a watch as Winona (Hanna Oldenburg) does her best to stave off the inevitable.
The synopsis for Blood Runs Cold is here:
