Katori Hall’s “P-Valley,” a show about the female dancers at The Pynk, a popular strip club in Mississippi, uses music to shine a spotlight on southern female rappers and artists.
In putting together the soundtrack for the series, music supervisors Sarah Bromberg and Stephanie Diaz-Matos turned to the show’s stars, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Loretta Devine, as well as Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion, to curate the anthems for Brandee Evans’ Mercedes, Elarica Johnson’s Autumn Night and Nicco Annan’s Uncle Clifford.
Here, Bromberg and Diaz-Matos break down how they landed Beyoncé and other needle drops for the show’s second season.
“Way Back” by Enchanting

Megan Thee Stallion is never afraid to drop a bar or two upholding her own greatness, and her latest single is a whole song dedicated to just that. On Monday, the rapper dropped the stylish music video for the song “Her,” a leading track from her recently released studio album, Traumazine.
Directed by Colin Tilley, the video features a group of fabulously clad Megans voguing along to the house-inspired track as the rapper’s boasts about being the top dog are supported by her impeccable flow.
“Just the other day, I heard a h*e say / matter of fact, what could a h*e say? / With a face like this and a b**ch this paid, sh*t, what could a h*e say?” the rapper opens. “The bag so expensive, my p**sy came with it, body so nice, they be sayin’, ‘Who did it?’ / But everything natural, actual,...

The producers of P-Valley must be pretty confident about the renewal prospects for a third season on Starz.
What other explanation exists for all the cliffhangers on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 10?
Katori Hall leaving so much unresolved only reveals a lot of narratives still to be unveiled on this drama.
That's not to say that no storylines were sewn up. Well, sort of, anyway.
Most importantly, Ernestine survived the Rona and returned home as cantankerous as ever. That's not surprising. She's too good a character to kill off so predictably.
In a perfectly Ernestine move, she even arranged her welcome-home party, retaining Big L, Duffy, and the Ugandans to convert The Pynk into Ernestine's Juke Joint.
Sadly, we didn't get to hear Ernestine perform. But she was recovering from a severe respiratory illness, so that's understandable.
Do we mark Uncle Clifford and Lil Murda's relationship as resolved? As with any May-December romance,...

That was one crazy day in Chucalissa!
The Mayoral election and the grand reopening of The Pynk were in the spotlight on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 9.
The mayoral race certainly got spiced up thanks to Autumn's unrevealed brainstorm on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 8.
Autumn found work for four of her laid-off strippers, who showed off their dance moves in Andre's campaign ads. As popular as The Pynk is in Chucalissa, those ads gave him a bump in the polls.
Not to be outdone, Patrice performed her pole dance on the back of a truck driving down the main drag. Then she used money guns to shoot away the bribe that Corbin had given her. That woman is shameless.
As the newscaster notes, "Things are getting dirty down in the valley."
It wasn't at all surprising that the results weren't available by night's end. It was an election amid a pandemic in a...

Chucalissa, and The Pynk in particular, are places in transition.
That fact was made abundantly clear on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 8.
The Promised Land casino, Chucalissa, and The Pynk are so intertwined that the outcome of the first will help determine the fate of the last two locations.
So it was little wonder that the mudslinging began in the Chucalissa mayoral race, with Andre the primary victim of it.
Andre brought most of this exposure on himself. In addition to screwing around with ex-stripper-turned-strip-club owner Autumn, he lied about his father being dead instead of being on Death Row for murder.
Andre missed an opportunity there. Indeed, having overcome such a father through his relationship with a new father figure, the late Mayor Ruffin, made for a much better success story.
But Andre also was caught up in the feud between Corbin, his primary financial backer, and the interim mayor, Wayne Kyle.

We’ve got another big summer week with movies, docuseries, reboots, and more padding the landscape of your regularly-scheduled broadcasting.
Flowers in the Attic: The Origin signs off in a big way on Lifetime, while Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head makes a splash on Paramount+.
Ron Howard’s latest film, Thirteen Lives, premieres on Prime Video, and there’s an interesting examination of Woodstock ‘99, which put pox on the Woodstock name.
Saturday, July 30
8/7c Flowers in the Attic: The Origin (Lifetime)
During part four of the limited series, Olivia becomes the most terrifying, notorious version of herself.
The loss of her children has driven her to a breaking point.
However, her newfound religious beliefs she developed from her cousin pushes her over the edge.
Our leading ladies answers some of your questions before the premiere of Part Four of #FlowersInTheAtticTheOrigin. @TShanWilliams @CaptainPooper @hannahfkdodd pic.twitter.com/jkK3drvk48

It's not easy being a mother.
That was the message that shined throughout P-Valley Season 2 Episode 7.
Providing their perspectives on motherhood were Mercedes, Autumn, Keyshawn, and even Uncle Clifford, in her own way.
It's becoming more and more apparent that Clifford is coming to a crossroads as she anticipates two significant losses in her life.
The first loss looks to be Grandmother Ernestine, whom Covid appears close to claiming.
The opening scene showing Ernestine in her prime was great, as we saw young Clifford was a regular at Ernestine's Juke Joint, the previous incarnation of The Pynk.
At some point, not yet touched upon, Beulah, Clifford's mother and Ernestine's daughter, died, and Ernestine became Clifford's surrogate mother.
Only now have their roles reversed, with Clifford caring for the diabetic Ernestine. Coronavirus has made the immuno-compromised woman's need even more significant.
So it was good that Lil Murda was staying with...

P-Valley said goodbye to one of its complex characters this week.
Unfortunately, on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 6, it wasn't the character that fans wanted to see gone.
Sadly, Derrick lives on. Meanwhile, Big Teak, we hardly knew ye.
Lil Murda's prison pal Teak disappeared from the show in just six episodes. And we only got to hear John Clarence Stewart (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist alumni) sing a few bars, despite the barber praising Teak's voice.
But that wasn't Teak's purpose. First, Teak allowed Stewart to play a radically different character than the straight-laced Simon on Zoey.
Teak also illustrated that, unlike Murda, not every ex-con successfully could make the transition back to the real world.
A prime example of that was the scene at the gas station. Teak's confusion over how to pay at the pump was quickly overshadowed by Murda's delight when he heard his song being played on a car radio.

Finally, Miss Mississippi fans got some of the answers they have been craving.
That's not to say that P-Valley Season 2 Episode 5 was the last word on the relationship between Keyshawn and her abusive, cracker baby daddy, Derrick.
As this episode pointed out, their union is complicated, putting it nicely.
The biggest problem for this couple is that they're presently heading in different directions.
Derrick is one of those ex-jocks whose life peaked in high school. He blames Keyshawn for "trapping" him and ruining his future (as a cheerleader?).
Having a lover that no one will hire, Keyshawn has been able to monetize her Miss Mississippi persona even amid a pandemic.
This twisted fairy tale, narrated oh so effectively by Uncle Clifford, did go a long way toward explaining what had brought Keyshawn and Derrick to where they are now. They have history, indeed.
The flashbacks hammered home how young the two are,...

Things are changing at The Pynk and for those connected to it.
If P-Valley Season 2 Episode 3 is any indication, it will be a wild ride.
Let's start with those who have escaped Chucalissa, at least for a time.
The Dirty Dozen Tour, featuring Lil Murda and Miss Mississippi, appeared to be a huge success. People were craving live entertainment after being locked up during the pandemic.
Keyshawn loved the public adulation and the freedom of being out from under the thumb of her possessive baby daddy, Derrick.
It also was evident that Keyshawn regretted her decision on P-Valley Season 1 Episode 8, choosing to save Derrick from the kindly Diamond. This choice got her banned from The Pynk, her supportive home, for many years.
Sentiment about Keyshawn was mixed back at The Pynk.
While Uncle Clifford felt betrayed by her pulling a gun on Diamond to protect Derrick, Autumn understood what an...
