Aria Mia Loberti, the breakout star of Shawn Levy’s Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See,” has narrated a new audio edition of Jules Verne’s classic novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”
Loberti, a writer, human rights advocate and Fulbright Scholarship recipient, made her acting debut in “All the Light We Cannot See,” an adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning novel which will premiere on Netflix Thursday. In the show, Loberti plays Marie-Laure, a courageous blind teenager living in Nazi-occupied France during WWII. As an act of resilience, Marie-Laure Leblanc defies a Nazi ban on radio broadcasts and reads passages from “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” over the radio airwaves every night.
Loberti says she was captivated by the positioning of Verne’s classic novel within Doerr’s book and became interested in recording a full length audiobook of “Twenty Thousand Leagues...

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

Exclusive: Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.
The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.
As part of the cost-reduction strategy, Disney’s streaming platforms, particularly flagship Disney+, have been taking a closer look on their programming with a new emphasis on content curation.
As Deadline reported exclusively Saturday, Disney+ also is not going forward with another upcoming original series, the The Spiderwick Chronicles, a U.S. live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books.
Over the past couple of months, dozens of original series and specials were taken off Disney+ as well as Hulu,...

Movie director and Oscar-winner James Cameron managed to break his own box-office records when he delivered Avatar to the big screen.
But before it hit theaters, Cameron used Brendan Fraser’s popular hit as a sort of guinea pig for Avatar.
Brendan Fraser originally thought the script for ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was ‘daft’ Brendan Fraser | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fraser once had a starring role in the sci-fi feature Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was based on a short story by French novelist Jules Verne. In the adaptation, Fraser played a professor who attempts to escape a cavern he finds himself trapped inside of. On his way out, Fraser’s professor encounters several creatures and obstacles that threaten his life.
Fraser admitted that when he first received the script, it was a concept he didn’t think much of.
“Verne was arguably science fiction’s creator.

The box office success of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey poses the question of which other public domain tales are best suited for the horror genre…
A good story remains paramount to a successful horror movie, but the heightened genre has also found considerable success through chilling adaptations. A major hurdle in any adaptation of an existing work is securing the copyright or license to legally be allowed to reinterpret this source material. Plenty of horror movie pipe dreams couldn’t come to fruition precisely because the rights for certain properties couldn’t be acquired. But an interesting wrinkle when it comes to the acquisition of rights is stories that have entered the public domain.
Written works typically enter the public domain seventy years after the death of their latest living author. It’s a situation that means that certain texts, like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein are free to be tackled...

Psychedelia and the Walt Disney Company would not, on the surface, seem like two things that go hand in hand. Disney, even now that it encompasses so much of popular culture, is meant to represent family values of a sort, and psychedelia ... is not. But some of the films in the Disney Animation feature canon, such as "Dumbo" and "Fantasia," take certain flights of fancy that are hard to square even now in the studio's legacy, creative leaps that are so stark and remarkable largely because so few films the studio has produced in the modern era have the interest in really pushing the boundaries. Disney Animation's latest film, "Strange World," lives up to its name at least in terms of the artistry on display. The story surrounding that artistry is perhaps somewhat familiar, but it's offset by buoyant pacing, compelling world-building, and truly trippy visuals.
