Actor Zac Efron almost missed out in a new adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Firestarter’. According to director Keith Thomas, it happened because of the ‘High School Musical’ star’s past as a teen heartthrob, reports aceshowbiz.com. The 34-year-old star appears in Keith’s big screen reimagining of the classic 1980 book playing Andy McGee, a father with […]...

“Firestarter”, the new science fiction horror feature, directed by Keith Thomas, starring Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Kurtwood Smith, John Beasley, Michael Greyeyes and Gloria Reuben, has fizzled out at the box office earning only 3.8 million domestic and 5.8 million worldwide over the weekend:
The original "Firestarter" feature starred Drew Barrymore as 'Charlie McGee', who develops 'pyrokinesis':
"...score 'Andrew' and 'Charlie McGee', are a father-daughter pair on the run from a government agency known as 'The Shop'. During his college years, Andy had participated in a Shop experiment dealing with 'Lot 6', a drug with hallucinogenic effects similar to LSD. The drug gave his future wife, 'Victoria Tomlinson', minor telepathic abilities, and him an autohypnotic mind domination ability known as 'the Push'.
"Both his and Vicky's powers are physiologically limited. In his case, overuse of the Push gives him crippling migraine headaches and minute brain hemorrhages,...

"Firestarter" is one of Stephen King's more medium-sized epics. Still, turning the +500 pages family horror drama into 90-minute thriller is a herculean task. To do so, director Keith Thomas and screenwriter Scott Teems focus largely on the central chase, with Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and Andy McGee (Zac Efron) on the run from shadowy government figures. There's a lot of material from the book hinted at and suggested, but for Thomas, he felt the best way to adapt King was simply to get the characters right.
The author himself signed off on the director after seeing Thomas' previous movie, "The Vigil." Now, Thomas...

Did we really need a new take of Stephen King’s 1980 novel Firestarter? The 1984 movie starring Drew Barrymore was reasonably compelling in that way that most early King movies were, if not particularly exceptional or memorable. (Aside from the highly unfortunate “red-face” casting of George C. Scott as a Native American government hit man, which, yikes!) And some may remember that John Carpenter had originally been set to direct that first adaptation of King’s story about a young girl with a penchant for psychokinetic pyrotechnics, yet was removed from...

Firestarter doesn’t exactly have a legacy to uphold. Stephen King’s 1980 novel is not considered one of his signature works. Derivative of Carrie (1974), but without its emotional depth and horror, the novel is a pulpy and fitfully entertaining mess. But its pyrokinetic heroine and the suspenseful chase structure could lend themselves to a gripping film adaptation. And maybe one day, they will.
The latest adaptation of Firestarter, however, isn’t it. Both an adaptation of the novel and a remake of the largely derided 1984 film, the movie is a disappointing endeavor hampered by a weak script, lifeless acting, and unconvincing special effects. A few atmospheric and technical flourishes keep it from being a total dumpster fire, but the spark just isn’t there.
The film starts with an intriguing credits sequence, observing young Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and his wife, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon), as they volunteer for a medical...

Firestarter is not often mentioned in lists of Stephen King’s classic novels; although it was his sixth published novel (under his own name) and came out during his initial decade of phenomenal success, it’s not exactly held up there with landmarks like The Shining or The Stand.
Of course there was still the inevitable movie, released in 1984 when it seemed like there was a new King adaptation hitting screens every month. Directed by Mark L. Lester (replacing John Carpenter early in development), with a screenplay by Stanley Mann, the ’84 Firestarter is actually very faithful to the book in terms of narrative and incident.
What it lacks, however, is any kind of soul. The ’84 Firestarter is an utterly mechanical effort, with the director putting the actors through their paces in workmanlike fashion and just jumping from plot point to plot point without any sense of the inner workings of...

Stars: Zac Efron, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Kurtwood Smith, John Beasley, Michael Greyeyes, Gloria Reuben | Written by Scott Teems | Directed by Keith Thomas
Zac Efron stars in this Blumhouse-produced remake of the 1984 thriller, based on a novel by Stephen King. Unfortunately, though the Blumhouse name is usually a sign of reasonable quality, something seems to have gone wrong this time round, because Firestarter is a distinct disappointment that lacks anything even remotely resembling a spark.
The plot begins with a distortion-heavy flashback sequence that plays during the opening credits and establishes that Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and girlfriend Vicky Tomlinson were both part of an experimental programme in their college years, where they were given a dose of a low-grade hallucinogen called Lot-6 and exhibited special powers. Years later, Andy and Vicky, now married, are on the run with their pre-teen daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), who’s beginning...

Following the news that Zac Efron had been cast in Blumhouse Films’ new adaptation of the 1980 Stephen King novel Firestarter, we had a chance to speak with Blumhouse president Jason Blum about what to expect from the latest addition to the King cinematic canon.
“It’s a relatively faithful version of the book,” says Blum, who is doing press this week for the upcoming Welcome to the Blumhouse series of genre movies. “We’re going to shoot it next year. I’ve got several things going with Stephen King, and he’s the ultimate icon to those of us like you and people who love this genre. Obviously this is a classic, so it’s slightly daunting, but we did well by people with Halloween so hopefully we won’t disappoint it with our new Firestarter.”
Blum wouldn’t divulge who Efron is playing in Firestarter, but it’s likely...

Firestarter, the Stephen King novel-turned-film, is already cemented in pop culture history with the iconic 1984 poster image of child star Drew Barrymore, who’s seen ominously emotionless in front of a blaze caused by her unbridled pyrokinetic powers; an image that was a clear inspiration for Stranger Things’ Eleven. However, the current crop of King-adapting films and television will see a Firestarter remake, which now has a headliner in Zac Efron.
Studios Universal, Blumhouse and Weed Road are moving forward with efforts for a Firestarter remake movie, and have announced its first cast member in Zac Efron, who will serve as one of its headlining stars, although his character was not disclosed. He will be in front of the camera for appointed director Keith Thomas (The Vigil), who works off a script by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), joined by producers Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman (who was the originally-tapped director). The project,...
