Doha, Dec 14 (Ians) While leading Argentina to the final of the FIFA World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Croatia, Lionel Messi has inched a step closer to fulfilling his biggest dream — adding the World Cup crown to the dozens of titles he has won in club cricket.
The 35-year-old scored a goal in the match through a penalty, which is his fifth in Qatar 2022.
In the process of taking Argentina to the final, Messi set many records and also set himself up for bettering more marks in international football and FIFA World Cup when Argentina take on the winner of the second semifinal between France and Morocco.
Messi is one of only six men to have played in five World Cups alongside Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus, Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to a report on fifa.com website.
He now shares the record with German World...

Paris, Dec 15 (Ians) Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Cristiano Ronaldo have found place in the greatest team of all time announced by France Football -- Ballon D'or Dream Team.
Having cancelled its annual Ballon d'Or award for the world's best footballer because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the weekly magazine instead has announced its best XI in history, as voted by journalists from 170 countries and regions.
The esteemed line-up includes Brazil's three-time World Cup winner Pele and legendary Argentinian Diego Maradona, who died last month of a heart-attack.
The team also includes goalkeeper Lev Yashin; defenders Cafu, Franz Beckenbauer and Paolo Maldini; and mid-fielders Xavi and Lothar Matthaus.
"For me it is an honour to have been included in the eleven of the Ballon d'Or Dream Team. I want to thank you for choosing me and also congratulate all the players who were selected ... and all the nominees, there are real phenomena on that list,...

Liverpool are in Spain preparing for tonight’s daunting Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, knowing that a victory would arguably be the most unlikely triumph in the club’s history. Brendan Rodgers’ side are in extremely poor form, both domestically and in Europe, while Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded team are scoring goals for fun and are the current champions of Europe. They key question is: has there ever been a game the Reds were less likely to win since the competition’s inception in 1992?
The 2005 Champions League Final is probably a good place to start. AC Milan, managed by Ancelotti at the time, had a ridiculous amount of talent in their side, whether it be Cafu and Paolo Maldini at the back, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in midfield or the brilliant Andriy Shevchenko up front. Not many gave Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool much hope,...

Newcastle have slapped a £10 million price tag on full-back Davide Santon as rumours of big clubs in his native Italy being interested in his signature persist. The Sunday Express report that the one link that won’t go away is Roma with boss Rudi Garcia said to be impressed by Santon’s versatility, intrigued by his ability to play on either flank. AC Milan are also said to be monitoring the situation regarding the former Inter youngster.
Santon made 27 starts for The Magpies last season but Alan Pardew seemingly lost faith in his defensive contributions as the season wore on, beginning by substituting him first when things weren’t going well and then relegating him to the bench in favour of Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara. Injuries didn’t help either in the final third of the campaign.
Still only 23, Santon has so much potential and should...

The stars came out in force at St. James’ Park last night as almost 51,000 fans paid tribute to one of Newcastle United’s loyalist servants.
Some of the biggest celebrities in the Magpies’ history turned out for Steve Harper’s testimonial, and faced an AC Milan side packed with legends of their own.
Celebrated names such as Alan Shearer, Faustino Asprilla and David Ginola all donned the black and white shirt one more time to mark 20 years of service from the goalkeeper.
And the Italians weren’t short of household names themselves, with Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio all featuring on an emotional night on Tyneside.
The game itself, which ended goalless, was settled by a penalty shootout that saw the Rossoneri’s old boys triumph. But the outcome was of little importance on a evening that saw all proceeds handed to local charities.

With just a little over two short weeks to go until the release of FIFA 14, publishers EA have been cranking their marketing for the latest in the long-running football simulation game up a notch.
Last week, we were treated to a Gareth Bale-inspired trailer, while this week, the first official demo was dropped.
As if that wasn’t enough to sate your appetite, yesterday, EA also unveiled the list of Legends who will be making their way over to the Ultimate Team mode later this month.
With the likes of Pele, Hernan Crespo, Paolo Maldini and Dennis Bergkamp making the shortlist, you can torture your opposition with a squad consisting of a strike force of Messi and Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Pires, even Gareth Bale and Andriy Shevchenko.
EA have revealed they had a hard time narrowing down the shortlist of footballing greats, and had to whittle down a...

After the somewhat bizarre news that Malaga will retire Isco’s number 22 shirt now he has left for Real Madrid, I have put together a team of players who have had their shirt number retired at a club.
On Tuesday the 25th June 2013 Malaga owner Abdullah N Al Thani tweeted:
“Shirts no. 22 will not be available to any other player in the Malaga Cf courtesy to the player Isco.” T
The news came as quite a surprise as the 21-year-old leaves Malaga after only two years at the club making 69 appearances.
The team I have picked will play in a 3-4-3 formation. So let’s begin…
Goalkeeper: Dale Roberts
The former Rushden & Diamonds goalkeeper had his number one shirt retired by the club after he committed suicide in December 2010 while still playing for the Northamptonshire side. Roberts made 103 appearances for Rushden & Diamonds and was voted their player of the...
