Currently India is the 103rd country in the list of 119 countries of the world in respect to the hunger index. ‘Raahgir’ is an angry manifesto by a veteran film maker who has shown the symbiotic relationship between poverty and rural life to us for a long time. Goutam Ghose’s ‘Raahgir’ gravitates around Nathuni’s (Tilottoma Shome) life and her struggle to satisfy hunger. This film is based on a short story—‘A day in the rain’ by Prafulla Roy.
The film opens with a scene where we see that Nathuni is almost getting raped. She fights against the situation and gets herself out. She carries the inflicted violence on her in the next sequence. The village where Nathuni and her family reside has no option to provide them with food. Nathuni’s husband (Omkar Das Manikpuri) is paralyzed due to police brutality and therefore cannot earn. MollywoodEven as the script and the characters stay rooted, there is not a lot in the film that can appeal to you.CrisThere are no stunts in the air, no long lines preaching a policeman’s duty. And when there is an attack, Mammootty does not brave every bullet and walk upfront like a superhero, he sits down weakened. In that sense, Unda, directed by Khalid Rahman, keeps the actor who's used to doing too many superhero roles in the past, rooted. And that is a much welcome relief. Unda does not offer a lot in terms of surprises or thrills. It is a plain narrative of a few days in the lives of a few policemen going for election duty in a Maoist-affected area in Chhattisgarh. Mammootty as Mani sir leads the mostly-young bunch of men, including Jojo (Shine Tom Chacko), Gireesh (Arjun Ashokan) and Aji (Rony David). The...

MollywoodHis latest film's, 'Madhura Raja', end card has given rise to speculations of a sequel.Digital NativeMammootty starrer Madhura Raja released to packed houses this Vishu and is doing well in the theatres. The most interesting factor about this film is its end card where the film ends with the title Minister Raja giving rise to speculations that there will be another sequel. As an Aamir Kahn production, Peepli Live (2010) automatically carried with it a lot of respect and hype from the world of Indian Cinema. Directed and written by Anusha Rizvi, the film tells the tale of two brothers, Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri) and Budhia (Raghuvir Yadav), whose farm is about to be seized by the government for failure to repay a loan.
They brothers seek advice from an unsympathetic politician who informs them of a new government scheme where by if one of them commits suicide their family will receive aid. A satirical gem from India, it's the anti-Slumdog Millionaire. By Cath Clarke
Armando Iannucci could not have done it better: a reporter with a sad face plastered on interviews an elderly woman: "Look at Indian motherhood, with a ravaged heart," he implores. The camera cuts to the cantankerous old dear puffing on a reefer. There is a deadly serious message about India's rural/urban divide in first-timer director Anusha Rizvi's satirical gem, but it also happens to have a juicily vulgar streak. Peepli Live has been compared to Slumdog Millionaire; here the little guy is a bankrupt farmer Natha (superbly played by folk-theatre actor Omkar Das Manikpuri). Natha decides to kill himself so that his family will qualify for a government scheme compensating families of farmers committing suicide. The story explodes into a media event, a will-he-or-won't-he-top-himself saga that grips the nation. Rivsvi is a former journalist and...

”Peepli Live” has been the toast and tea of town for the better part of this past year. A Sundance selection and Berlinale screening, it has been picking up favor and five star reviews across the Prime Meridian, becoming the focus of India’s annual interest in evaluating its culture through the Western eye. Unlike the last time though, when the bland “Slumdog Millionaire” rubbed most of the country wrong, “Peepli Live” is an intelligent look at an India desperate to put together its own sense of self and struggling with its most absurd internal contradictions on a daily basis. There is the specter of overestimation about the film, directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi, and the hype surrounding it has more to do with its political overtones and how well it has been received everywhere else. To be fair, that last bit is criticism one can level at anything even remotely decent these days.

'Peepli Live' (2010)
Starring Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghubir Yadav, Shalini Vatsa, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Many will say that 'Peepli Live' is not your typical Bollywood film—it is and it isn't. It shows a side of India that's grinding instead of glamorous, it's a small film rather than a larger-than-life one, and there are no big-name stars in it. But one very big Bollywood name produced it—Aamir Khan—and it is still fundamentally a Bollywood film.
The selective Aamir Khan Productions has produced less than a handful of films since its formation nearly a decade ago, including one—the company's first, 'Lagaan' (2001)—that was nominated for an Academy Award (only the third Indian film in history to get an Oscar nod), and there's a good chance 'Peepli Live' could be the next Indian film to wind up in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

They also object to the scene in the film where Raghubir Yadav (Budhia) tells his brother Natha to go for the suicide to save the family from losing its land to lenders. Watching ‘Peepli Live’ makes you wonder - does Aamir Khan possess a magic lamp? Of course, the film is not about this Midas-touch man. Yet it is about him. Because every year scores of beautiful films like this one never reach your eyeballs.
A simple comment, “Brother what will happen if our land goes”, a satirical song ‘Desh Mera’ by Indian Ocean and a ride on a rickety transport locally called ‘Jugaad’ opens the film and sets the mood. The transport where everyone hangs for a ride and our ‘hero’ pukes out of is an analogy for India.

Aamir Khan.s publicity blitzkrieg ensured that Omkar Das Manikpuri-Raghubir Yadav starrer .Peepli Live. opened at multiplexes in a positive manner which converted to rocking 90% of capacity by evening shows on 1st day itself. Coming weekend, with 15th August being a national holiday, will only further the audience.s attraction towards the flick. In any case, reports suggest that block booking at premium multiplexes has already been done for the coming Sunday and the audiences are attracted to this rural phenomenon despite of being not that comfortable with the local dialect used in the flick. Even single screen theatres. audiences, who generally prefer action or something glossy, saucy fare, have taken to the movie with fancy. Aamir Khan.s genius marketing strategy is being attributed for the success of the film at the box office. Of course, the number .Mahangayee Dayan. is also adding to the attraction of the film.

To fans of Bollywood, even the most casual ones, actor-producer-director Aamir Khan needs no introduction. He is one of Indian cinema's most popular actors, and consequently, he is also one of the biggest stars in the world. Here in the United States, he is perhaps still best known to foreign film fans as the star and producer of the extremely successful 2001 release Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, the first feature shepherded by Khan's production company, Aamir Khan Productions. Khan isn't known for doing a tremendous amount of interviews, so the opportunity to speak with him recently was one that I jumped at. Khan was in the United States as part of the promotional tour for Peepli Live, the new feature which Khan has produced, but has opted not to star in.
