Nancy Boy: Semans Debut Morbidly Entertaining
She’s the one that got away, but not in the way you’d think in Andrew Seman’s debut, Nancy, Please, an entertaining little jaunt of a film that manages to use its singularly structured point of view to give us something new concerning the plight of the privileged, white man-child. Overriding its own one note nature to give us an acerbic tale of arrested development, Semans, who also co-wrote with first time writer Will Heinrich, proves to be an adept storyteller, even if not quite everything about his debut is successful. But you may be surprised at whose perspective you align yourself with come the film’s final frames.

The Romantics
Stars: Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody, Dianna Agron, Jeremy Strong, Rebecca Lawrence, Candice Bergen, Elijah Wood | Written and Directed by Galt Niederhoffer
When looking at The Romantics there is a simple question, did you like Dawson’s Creek? If so then you’ll probably like this. Katie Holmes is a good actress but at times her roles can be quite similar in appearance, role and casting. This could be said to be the weakest part of The Romantics, but the fact is there is a strange charm that will catch your interest if you let it, though overall still feeling there was something lacking.
When friends and family make their way to a beach house for the wedding of Lila and Tom everything should be perfect for the main event. With storm clouds threatening though and a history between Tom and the maid...

Nancy, Please
Written by Andrew Semans and Will Heinrich
Directed by Andrew Semans
USA, 2011
No subject is more over-represented in American indies than graduate (or post-graduate) stasis, so it’s only natural to approach Andrew Semans’s feature directorial debut, Nancy, Please, with extreme cynicism. Thankfully, despite the fact that it revolves around a graduate student’s attempt to complete his thesis – or, more accurately, the means by which he does anything but attempt to complete it – Semans’s film is more a darkly comic psychodrama than an aimless defense of navel-gazing.
Paul (Will Rogers) has a problem, but it’s one he immediately misidentifies. He’s already months behind on his dissertation on Charles Dickens’s Little Dorritt when he loses his self-annotated copy – he’s left it behind at his former apartment, in the care of a notoriously unstable girl named Nancy (Elenore Hendricks). To the chagrin of...

The travails of the man child take an intriguing new direction in "Nancy, Please," the feature-length debut of writer-director Andrew Semans. His bumbling anti-hero, hopelessly procrastinatory Yale PhD student Paul (Will Rogers), fits the kind of immature young adult role that might go to Jason Segel in a mainstream version of this discomfiting tale, which would indubitably end with a new lesson learned. "Nancy, Please" avoids that route, fiercely dedicated to making nearly everyone in its cast unlikable and irredeemable but nevertheless objects of pity. At the movie's start, Paul moves into a new home with his supportive girlfriend Jen (Rebecca Lawrence), then realizes he has left a copy of Charles Dickens' "Little Dorrit" at his old home, where it lies in possession of his strange ex-roommate Nancy (Elenore Hendricks, who played Ronald Bronstein's ex-wife in "Daddy Longlegs"). Facing extreme pressure from his advisor to...

In the darkly comic psychodrama "Nancy, Please," Will Rogers stars as Paul, a PhD candidate at Yale who is struggling to complete his dissertation. But after moving in with his girlfriend Jen (Rebecca Lawrence), Paul realizes that he left his vital copy of Dickens' "Little Dorrit" at his last apartment. He grows increasingly desperate as he tries to retrieve the book, which he needs to finish his thesis, from his casually sinister former roommate, Nancy (Eleonore Hendricks). Rising Broadway star Santino Fontana ("Billy Elliot," "The Importance of Being Earnest") plays Paul's friend Charlie."Nancy, Please" is the first feature by writer-director Andrew Semans, a Brooklyn-based filmmaker who graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York. The world premiere will be held Saturday, April 21 at the Tribeca Film Festival."I was of course really thrilled, particularly because it's Tribeca," casting director Rori Bergman says of the film's inclusion at Tff.

In a couple of weeks, the red carpet will roll out and lights will be dimmed for the Tribeca Film Festival, and a host of films will be unspooling for the first time in front of an audience. And one of the films hoping to earn attention from audiences will be Andrew Semans' dark, comic psychodrama "Nancy, Please."
Starring Will Rogers, Rebecca Lawrence and Eléonore Hendricks, the film tells the story of Paul (Rogers) a gifted graduate student at Yale who has finally moved in with his longtime girlfriend, Jen (Lawrence). A bright and promising future is ahead of them, but Paul has left an item of great importance at his old apartment: a tattered, personally annotated copy of Charles Dickens' "Little Dorrit," the subject of his dissertation, and he simply must have it back. Doing so means recovering it from his casually sinister and inexplicably vindictive former roommate,...

Contrary to popular belief, I fucking hate being right. When I go into a film, I'm not rooting against it. I want to like it. I hate wasting roughly two hours of my life on something that's unenjoyable. When I saw the trailer for Galt Niederhoffer's The Romantics, based on her novel of the same name, I compared it to masturbating to the L.L. Bean catalog. And that's pretty much dead fucking on. This entire film is the L.L. Bean catalog: a bunch of rich, white, spoiled, overeducated, and melancholy twenty-thirty-whogivesafuckhowolds meet up at some Nantucket Nesters homestead for the wedding of two of their own. And sure, some of the performances are terrific, some are mediocre, and some are just plain ugly -- just like the clothing in the old Bean. You might pause when flipping through because there are some brief moments that catch your eye.

Katie Holmes has got support from her husband Tom Cruise when attending the Cinema Society Screening of "The Romantics" on Tuesday, September 7. Quite the bundle of talent convened in New York this morning to discuss The Romantics, the ensemble dramedy about a group of college friends who gather roughly 10 years after graduation to celebrate a wedding among them. Or maybe not "celebrate" -- Laura (Katie Holmes) has some lingering bitterness over bride-to-be Lila (Anna Paquin) stealing her boyfriend Tom (Josh Duhamel). The ensuing seaside snafu ensnares pals Malin Åkerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Rebecca Lawrence and Jeremy Strong, all of whom joined Holmes and Duhamel today to meet the press.

To promote their new movie "The Romantics," stars Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Adam Brody, Malin Akerman, Rebecca Lawrence and Jeremy Strong did a fun photoshoot for J.Crew.
The movie tells the story of seven close friends who are reunited for a wedding between Lila (Anna Paquin) and Tom (Duhamel). Maid-of-honor Laura (Holmes) has long rivaled Lila for Tom's affections, though. The love triangle comes to a head the night before the wedding, when the drunken friends go swimming and return to shore without the groom.

This romantic thriller is based on a novel by Galt Niederhoffer. She is also the screenplay writer and the director and is also producing the 2012 film "The Bell Jar." "Romantics" hits theaters Sept. 10. We're intrigued -- are you going to see it?
And yes, star Anna Paquin was missing from the photo shoot -- but clearly she was busy with another photoshoot.

Bringing together a cast designed to target a wide, generationally-appropriate viewers, Galt Niederhoffer’s The Romantics is hitting theaters soon, and the semi-pseudo-indie film looks as though it may deliver. The story is that of a group of friends reconnecting for the marriage of two of the members, and the uneasiness discovered when squaring off with the past. Not only are there hints of discord between bride-to-be Lila and ex-girlfriend Laura, but this group has a past that is tangled every which way.
With a simple setting and a tone and arc that are driven by conversations, the film plays up its lack of flash in something like an “indie by design” effort.
It looks pretty good actually, if the story comes together, but like all such ensemble struggles, the test is going to be how well the supporting cast delivers.
Let me know what you think.

Laura (Katie Holmes) is maid of honor to Lila (Anna Paquin), her golden girl best friend. The two have long rivaled over the groom, Tom (Josh Duhamel). Friendships and alliances are tested and the love triangle comes to a head the night before the wedding, when the drunken friends frolic in the nearby surf and return to shore… without the groom. We never wrote a review for Galt Niederhoffer’s The Romantics at Sundance this year. Our writer Kristen Coates was unimpressed and the film had no plans for release. Now, with a distributor, release date and first trailer today she sent me her quick thoughts.
The film stars Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, Rebecca Lawrence, and Candice Bergen. Check out our mini-review below and the trailer and poster via Apple.
Kristen Coates’ Sundance mini-review:
The Romantics feels like a cross between a soap opera and a modern day St. Elmo’s Fire, with an assortment of characters and all the baggage they bring to a wedding/reunion weekend. However, this genre film remains light on substance and high on drama, leaving the viewer ultimately unsatisfied. The main story focuses around Laura (Katie Holmes), who is attending the wedding of her former...

Three more movies... But in truth I'm not sure which day we're on. I may have scrambled up the chronology just like Blue Valentine does. I am typing this on Saturday for publication on Sunday about movies from Friday. Where am I? When Am I? I spent today being sick so no more movies. The sickness is why, even though it seemed like i was seeing a bajillion movies, I really wasn't. I worry that I missed a few great pictures and that I saw too many that ended up with or already had distribution deals that I could have seen later. But it's my first Sundance trip. I was doin' it wrong. Better luck next time.

Katie Holmes was flying solo in Park City, Ut for this year's Sundance Film Festival, but she found plenty of good friends to hang out with at the premiere of her new film, 'The Romantics,' including co-stars Josh Duhamel and Malin Akerman! "We've actually stayed in good touch and we all e-mail each other all the time and go to dinner often, and so it's great to see each other again, and I love these guys so much," Katie tells Et. In the 'Big Chill'-style ensemble piece 'The Romantics,' Katie stars opposite Josh and Anna Paquin as former college friends caught up in a love triangle. Malin, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, Rebecca Lawrence and Dianna Agron also star. "This movie is about a group of friends that went to Yale together and they've come back together about ten years later for a wedding," explains Katie.

Katie Holmes spent her first days at Sundance supporting her film The Extra Man with a special screening, but last night she switched gears to focus on her other movie debuting at the festival. She was in a tan shirt and black scarf to premiere The Romantics, moving on later to an afterparty with many of her costars like Elijah Wood, Malin Akerman, and Adam Brody. Josh Duhamel was able to take a break from his travels on behalf of When in Rome - make sure to check out Buzz's exclusive interview with Josh and Kristen Bell and enter CelebStyle's giveaway to win your own trip to the Italian capital!
