As you can probably tell, this list feels more arbitrary than others. That’s not by design, but the unfortunate premise of the list leaves some room for interpretation. As we move forward, we will start seeing the films that, if you asked a lay person to give an example, would probably be a response. In other words, more people have heard of them, which, in turn, often makes them more “definitive.” Don’t worry, though – there are still some underseen and underappreciated gems the rest of the way through.
40. Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)
Directed by: Béla Tarr
It’s certainly not the swiftest film on the list, but you can’t expect much quick plot development from Béla Tarr. Wreckmeister Harmonies takes place in a tiny Hungarian town surrounded by nothing. The winter is incredibly cold, but it never snows. Yet the townspeople are excited in the middle of town as...

Update: The trailer has been added below! Earlier this week, Jason Sanders and Blake Hooks attempted to shoot a 90-minute horror film in the span of 24 hours. That's a Guiness World Record right there and we got into more details on that endeavor in this news item from last month . The film is called The Deadlines and, according to the film's Facebook page, Hooks and Sanders succeeded. "That's a wrap! The Deadlines has officially completed it's record setting attempt of a 90 minute feature film in 24 hours! Thanks to everyone!" they announced.

A while back we told you about an indie film called The Deadlines that was looking to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by shooting a ninety-minute horror film in the span of 24 hours. Well, it looks as if they've succeeded, and we've got a still to prove it!
Synopsis
"That's a wrap! The Deadlines has officially completed its record-setting attempt of a 90-minute feature film in 24 hours! Thanks to everyone!" say filmmakers Jason Sanders and Blake Hooks.
Travis Levon (Rickey Bird) is forced to finish a novel from famous author Simon Woodburn (Robin Steffen) after he suddenly dies in order to meet a deadline.
Gavin Stone (James MacPherson), his callous boss, reminds Travis of the importance of this finale to an epic saga of books. “The Deadlines” will be the highest grossing book in history with pre-sales, and Mr. Stone won't let a petty thing like death stop it from hitting shelves.

Let's admit it, horror has arguably been fairly weak as of late. And now, more than ever, I think we should be expecting more from the genre, pushing filmmakers to push themselves and the limits of cinema. So if it comes between a strong gimmick or a strong film, I'll ask for the latter. Can writer-director Jason Sanders and Blake Hooks pull off both? Time will tell. The duo are presently in pre-production on The Deadlines . Here's the catch, they're going to shoot the 90-minute film in 24 hours, thus an attempt to break a world record. Paul Wolverton will star as Simon Woodburn, a famous author who suddenly dies and leaves an unfinished novel in the hands of Travis in "The Deadlines."...
