Nobody said it would be easy mashing up So You Think You Can Dance‘s weekly performances and results into a single, 120-minute telecast. But just as an old Cat can learn new dance steps — our hostess really did boogie as she made her entrance in a sultry red dress! — so too did Sytycd manage to pack in a group number, a special guest performance (from the cast of Step Up Revolution), 10 competitive routines, and a brutal set of results that lopped off a fifth of the Season 9 crop.

Tonight on the first So You Think You Can Dance performance and results show, the 10 couples performed again with brand-new routines. Daniel Baker, Nick Bloxsom-Carter, Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, Alexa Anderson, Witney Carson and Janaya French were the three guys and three girls who received the fewest votes. After deliberating, the judges . Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge Adam Shankman . saved Chehon Wespi-Tschopp and Witney Carson from elimination, and Daniel Baker, Nick Bloxsom-Carter, Alexa Anderson and Janaya French were sent packing. In addition, the cast from the new movie .Step Up Revolution. also appeared on tonight.s show. Lythgoe also reminded viewers that the third annual National Dance Day will take place on Saturday, July 28,...

The first four competitors have been eliminated from the latest season of So You Think You Can Dance. Contemporary dancers Alexa Anderson and Janaya French were sent home along with ballroom dancer Nick Bloxsom-Carter and ballet dancer Daniel Baker. All had finished up in the bottom six following a public vote. The judges ultimately elected to save latin/ballroom dancer Witney Carson and ballet specialist Chehon Wespi-Tschopp. Following changes to the show's format including the loss of the stand-alone results show, the dancers were not given the chance to perform a 'last-chance' solo in order to convince the panel - regular judges Nigel Lythgoe (more)...

So You Think You Can Dance 2012 eliminated Alexa,Janaya,Nick & Daniel in round 1. Earlier tonight, the first elimination show for "So you Think You Can Dance 2012" aired, and 4 unlucky dancers got sent packing real quick, narrowing the field down to just 16 people. The entire 20 contestants also did their performance rounds for tomorrow night's elimination episode. Then host Kat Deeley revealed that Witney Carson,Janaya French, and Alexa Anderson were the bottom three vote-getters for the girls, and Chehon,Nick Bloxsom-Carter,and Daniel Baker were the bottom three for the guys. Next, the judges revealed that they wanted to keep Witney around. Then they revealed that they wanted to keep Chehon around. This meant that Alexa, Janaya,Nick, Daniel got the shaft. That really sucks for Alexa, because she went through so many breakthroughs to finally make the show, and she was cute as hell too. Oh well.

There’s a “Closed” sign hanging at the ticket booth for the So You Think You Can Dance Hot Tamale Express, but not because the Season 9 Top 20 isn’t packed with talent. Quite the contrary, I’d say that based on Top 20 Performance Night, there are already a good dozen dancers who’ve scored reservations on the exclusive locomotive (with its crazed conductor Mary Murphy).
The depth of the field — and the lack of unbeatable early front-runners so early in the competition — is good news for fans of the show. The resulting sense of suspense — and the reality that no...

Watching So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 9 Top 20 announcement episode — its first this year with live, choreographed dances — I was struck by the fact that the show really is like an old friend. No matter how long it’s been away, it only takes a minute or two for me to fall back in step with its warm and familiar cadences.
There was Cat Deeley, playfully announcing that just minutes into the telecast, she was already covered in the sweat of nearby dancers. (Not nearly as gross as it sounds.) There was Mary Murphy, hooting like a tipsy...

The top twenty finalists for Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance have been announced. Top dancers were chosen on the recent 200th episode of the reality competition show, with host Cat Deeley and judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge Zooey Deschanel on hand to celebrate. Lythgoe, who also produces the show, thanked the choreographers and "all these kids, and America for blessing us with such wonderful talent". Last week, contestants battled out in the Las Vegas rounds for a coveted spot in the finals. After their reveal, the finalists performed a dance routine choreographed by Mia Michaels, which Lythgoe asked to see twice because there was "so much going on". The Top 20 finalists were revealed as: 1. Alexa Anderson, 19 (contemporary)
2. Amber Jackson, 21 (contemporary)

Spoiler Alert: Finally! Twenty dazzling dancers have made it to “Los Ange-leese”! EW sat in the audience Monday night for the taping of the performance show. Your Top 20 are listed after the break — but first, some odds and ends from on the scene:
Executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe made a cute speech during the cake-cutting ceremony (pictured) before the taping — he made sure to thank producers, and choreographers, but “first and foremost all these kids, and America for blessing us with such wonderful talent. God bless America.” Okay settle down Nigel. You’re laying it on almost as thick as that frosting!

Vegas Week on So You Think You Can Dance always makes me think of the classic intro to ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and Season 9 proved no exception. Indeed, with 181 dancers battling through eight different rounds over four days, two people exiting on stretchers, and only 35 remaining at the end of the two-hour telecast, Jim McKay’s voiceover — “the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and the human drama of athletic competition” — would’ve fit right in alongside Mary Murphy’s whoops of approval and Adam Shankman’s tears.
Still, if memory serves, I don’t think there...

Like American Idol during its Vegas week(s), So You Think You Can Dance's semifinal excursions to Sin City are treated as quaint, host-narrated docudramas. And frankly? It couldn't be any better. Vegas week is always compelling, even if we spend too much time following around middle-of-the-pack dancers who keep earning flak from the judges. But remember: Flak is entertaining, and it turns statuesque ballerinas into crying piles of blubberiness. In fact, this section of the series could be spun off into a grueling Olympic event called The Cryathlon, because my god, the tears. They were everywhere last night. And sometimes they were hilarious.
With that, let's take a break from the exceptional dancing and sort through the funnier stuff from last night's telecast. Remember when Mary Murphy growled at Alexa Anderson and sounded like Janis Joplin struggling to sing "Piece of My Heart" while eating a ham and cocaine sandwich?...

As "So You Think You Can Dance's" careers through Season 9, we're moving closer to the top 20 and the show's perennial Las Vegas week took us one (dance) step closer. But not without some tears. Okay, lots of tears.
The biggest outburst came from Alexa Anderson, who burst into water works after a pretty harsh critique from choreographer Tyce Diorio. Honestly, anyone would've cried after that smackdown.
"I'm beyond your beauty," said Diorio criticizing Alexa's noted inability to emote. "The lights are on, but no one is home."
Judge Mary Murphy was a bit more gracious, encouraging Alexa to let go and "take a risk."
"I'm wracking my brain and pushing myself," says a distraught Alexa who is only 19, though a "Sytycd" vet having made it to Vegas in Season 8. "I know I can get there I know that I can be on this show and I know that I can do it.

There’s nothing like the “Vegas Callbacks” round to make So You Think You Can Dance look like a common pool party!
Thirty-five dancers moved on after a grueling Vegas Callbacks round. Contestants had to make it through four routines: Broadway with Tyce Diorio, Jazz with Sonya Tayeh, Ballroom with Jason Gilkinson, and Contemporary with season 2 runner-up and frequent choreographer Travis Wall. We barely saw any names on-screen (so I’m sorry I can’t give you the official list of 35), but the editors did make sure to give us one complete Vegas story arc: that of Blake Lively lookalike Alexa Anderson.

This week's comments, questions and concerns come without any technical dance knowledge and no actual dance skills ... just straight up love for "So You Think You Can Dance."
"Sytycd," the things you do to me!
Let's start off with a hat tip to the producers, Coldplay and Florence and the Machine within the first half hour, and they managed to find a way to out-aww the baby ballerina from last week? Well played.

Guest Judge: Jesse Tyler Ferguson
The Los Angeles auditions certainly got off on the right foot with the first straight-to-Vegas dancer, Alexa Anderson. The 19-year-old hopeful made it all the way to the final judging during last season's Top 20 reveal, but ultimately lost out to Season 8 dancer Ryan. Lucky for us, Alexa decided to give it another go for Season 9 and now she is headed straight to Vegas!

I’ll admit I was a little worried when judge Mary Murphy warned against excessive booty-shaking to kick off So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 9 Los Angeles auditions, but then I remembered: We’re talking about the inventor of the mythical Hot Tamale Train, a woman whose hooting, hollering, and general hootenanny-ing is so patently goofy, there’s no way she would seriously place restrictions on the fine art of contestants putting their backfields in motion. Plus, fabulous guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson wasn’t cosigning that warning anyhow. Let the wild rump-bumping begin!
