Lucknow Central
Starring Farhan Akhtar, Gippy Grewal, Diana Penty, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Sharma, Inamulhaq
Directed by Ranjit Tiwari
Rating: **** ½ (4 and a half stars)
“You don’t get justice in the world, you only get good luck or bad luck,” a wise old librarian (pronounced ‘lee-bray-nian’ by his Lucknowi singer-son) quotes Orson Welles.
Our good luck, then, that we get a prison drama as taut and thrilling, relevant and resonant as Lucknow Central right in the middle of the year when things are looking bloody bleak in Bollywood.
Yes, there is hope. Lucknow Central is by far the most engaging thinking-man’s thriller of the year. Ballsy and brave, it penetrates the politics of prison life without relinquishing the right to engage us in a solid storytelling spree where a clever cat-and-mouse game is played out between a sadistic jailor (Ronit Roy, in top form) and a non-guilty prisoner (Farhan Akhtar...

There is a moment of subdued splendour in this thriller that is both brutal and tender, where a chaprasi in a government office–you know the busybodies who offer to help when the Babus act tough?— gives our autumnal hero John Biswas some vital information.
Then the chaprasi casually asks if there is petrol in John’s rickety scooter. As John parts with his only means of transportation he even helps the bureaucratic broker start the ancient vehicle.
Yes, the scooter has seen better days. So has John Biswas. There was a time when he knew joy.His grand-daughter Angela who was left to John’s care while his father went abroad. In a merciless twist of fate Angela is kidnapped for ransom and killed.
Debutant director Ribhu Dasgputa’s shimmering portrait of distant discontent is about John’s atonement,...

The worst feeling you could have after watching a film isn’t the dejavu of been-there, seen-that. It isn’t the Wtf of lost logic. It’s when you feel potential. It could have been but… it wasn’t. Katti Batti is picturised as a refreshing take on role reversal and the importance of “this moment”. A trend that’s been going on for a few years now. Great to see and when done right makes hearts flutter in excitement, minds think in wonder and establish a reel-to-real life connection. Katti Batti tries so very, very hard to be one of those romance dramas that make your heart melt but falls flat as pancake.
Story wise it’s a boy meets girl at college and falls in love but then delves into the relm of live in relationship, the ups and downs. Due to reasons you only find out in the end,...

There is no need to start foaming at the mouth—like the film’s hero Maddy does after he consumes phenyl—and muttering expletives—as Maddy’s love-interest Payal does all the time—just because the film’s narrative sags in parts.
Dullness is not a crime in the movies. Dishonesty is. And Nikhil Advani’s juvenilely but aptly named Katti Batti(the two words used by school kids when they fight and make up) doesn’t have a single untruthful moment in it.
You may not flow with or even agree with the plot’s infuriating take on unrequited love. And you may even find the concept of a lovelorn Majnu with a perpetual hangdog expression and a pet turtle to tend to , a bit too much to take. But this guy Nikhil Advani who gave us his take on a hardcore massy love story last week, means business.

Pyar karne wale kabhi darte nahin jo darte hain woh pyar karte nahin. 32 years ago Meenakshi Sheshadri had lip-synced Anand Bakshi’s famous words about boundless, unchained, unstoppable love.
Now it’s the striking debutant Athiya Shetty who mouths these words, though we don’t see her saying it. Just feeling it.
Which is really in the fitness of things. This 2015 adaptation of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 musical blockbuster captures the impish bustle and the unbridled impetuousness of first love from the original, and merges these into something slightly sinister and dark.
Because, folks this is 2015. Love at first sight is not a tenable target for a lifetime of togetherness. There are more practical considerations to be gone through before love conquers the pay cheque. Nikhil Advani’s remake of a film about a highly melodratic love is rendered into practical pastel pastiche of passion pain and rebellion.
Hero looks and feels posh.

Almost eleven years back in the summer of Mumbai, me and a couple of friends meandered through a few shabby lanes in search for a ‘home’. We were all new to ‘Bombay’, graduates from ‘Calcutta’ looking for something in our lives. I did manage to scrape through to Pune, months later, which in those days used to remain a bit laid-back as compared to Bombay and more to my liking. But Bombay didn’t spare me. My girlfriend then was in Bombay and so I visited the city alternate weeks – from Vile Parle to Dadar, from Cst to Santa Cruz, to my friends in Borivli and my cousin at Anushaktinagar. Why so much of a personal gibberish? Cause the film which re-winded my memories is indeed personal – for me, and for many migrants like me who wanted to cope with her – Mumbai to all and Bombay to few including me.

Normally when I see a movie, the critic in me is immediately ready to find a computer, open Microsoft Word and let the words flow from my brain to my fingertips to the screen. But it's been three days since I've seen Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat and I still can't fully understand how or why it affected me. It's the kind of film that seeps into you slowly and silently, without your awareness.
It would have been so easy for Rao to make the kind of film that Aamir Khan's wife would be expected to make. After all, he's one of the biggest stars in India and despite his presence, this isn't the Aamir Khan film you'd expect. Khan plays one of four central characters, whose lives are each woven into the intricate fabric of Mumbai.
