It's beginning to look a lot like gift-mas around EW's headquarters—which is why we decided to devote this week's PopWatch Confessional to the real reason for the season (read: presents). The question posed to our staffers: What's the best pop culture-related gift you've ever received? Molly Smith, editorial assistant: My friend is an artist, and one of our favorite movies is Step Brothers. She painted me a portrait of the Step Brothers cover, but replaced Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly with James Blunt and Clay Aiken, artists we poke fun at occasionally. (The painting is pictured above.) It’s certainly a conversation starter!

. Carolyn Giardina recounts the reasoning of Christopher Nolan on the sound of "Interstellar." As the director explains, “I’ve always loved films that approach sound in an impressionistic way and that is an unusual approach for a mainstream blockbuster, but I feel it's the right approach for this experiential film." And, he adds, "“Many of the filmmakers I’ve admired over the years have used sound in bold and adventurous ways. I don’t agree with the idea that you can only achieve clarity through dialogue. Clarity of story, clarity of emotions — I try to achieve that in a very layered way using all the different things at my disposal — picture and sound.” THR -Break- C. Molly Smith makes merry with Ben Affleck's brief nude scene in "Gone Girl" by chatting with author Gillian Flynn, who adapted her bestseller: "It is so quick. Maybe you see it, maybe you don’t.

Surely you didn't think the Original family was out of secrets, did you? Because as Tatia's appearance on the show proved, even the noblest of Originals has skeletons in his closet. And from what executive producer Michael Narducci had to say about the hour, there's more where that came from: On Kol's allegiances moving forward: "I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily about to jump into bed with his siblings," Narducci told EW. "But he’s got his own agenda. With Kol, he knows he is a lesser witch than both Finn and Esther, and that is by design. Esther...

At this point, fans of The Originals know what Esther's plan is: She wants to help her children escape the curse of vampirism she once brought upon them by placing them in the bodies of witches. But Klaus and Elijah don't exactly trust their dear old mother—and after she took Elijah captive in last week's episode, it doesn't look like that'll change anytime soon. So what happens now? As executive producer Michael Narducci tells EW, "Esther’s drive is: I knew when I made my children into vampires, I was trying to save them. I had no idea that...

Intense music drama Whiplash, already a big winner at Sundance and the Deauville American Film Festival earlier this year, should drum up plenty of audience interest in its debut this weekend, even though it faces a crowded specialty market that also features several other notable newcomers, including the Bill Murray comedy St. Vincent, Hilary Swank‘s You’re Not You and Jeremy Renner‘s Kill the Messenger. All are what I’d call “big” specialty releases, with big names attached that should attract big attention.
The weekend also includes what I’d call some “small” releases, including documentaries The Overnighters (another Sundance winner) and I Am Ali, about the former heavyweight boxing champion, alongside the Mormon Church-backed Meet the Mormons. All will be clawing for attention in a market that’s seen more than 30 films debut in the past three weeks.
That said, Whiplash should be a real career turner...

The story deals with a murky legal loophole that allows mercenaries to cross into Mexico to corral drug kingpins, as long as they are accompanied by a legitimate law officer.
In this film, said officer is a Tucson female cop who is joining two delta force-type rangers trying to apprehend a drug lord. Once across, she encounters violence and depravity like she never imagined.

Exclusive: Hot off helming the kidnap thriller Prisoners, Denis Villeneuve is circling Sicario, a Taylor Sheridan-scripted drama that is fast coming together with Black Label financing, and producing with Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road. Black Label is the finance/production company formed by Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill. Just as Villeneuve’s films Prisoners and especially Incendies presented thrillers with complex moral dilemmas and shocking conclusions, Sicario presents a similar opportunity for the filmmaker. It focuses on the murky legal loophole that allows mercenaries to breach the border of Mexico to corral drug kingpins, as long as they are accompanied by a legitimate law officer. In this case, a female cop from Tucson accompanies two delta force-type rangers across the border to apprehend a drug lord. Once across the border, the cop finds she has stepped into No Country For Old Men terrain, with violence and depravity she never imagined.
