Good news for 12-year-old kids who talk about Deadpool as if he’s Jean-Luc Godard, think calling someone a “fuck puppet” is the height of comedy, and just can’t wait until July for another noxiously self-aware cartoon bloodbath about a disfigured anti-hero who dresses in red and simply refuses to shut up: “Boy Kills World” is here. The film’s hyper-logorrheic protagonist doesn’t actually talk, on account of the fact that his tongue was sliced off when he was a child. “Boy” communicates to us instead through the magic of his internal monologue, for which he permanently assigned the voice of H. Jon Benjamin because the “Bob’s Burgers” actor sounds like a little boy’s idea of a lovable vigilante, equal parts Ryan Reynolds and Christian Bale.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival is underway. While this is one of the festivals where a lot of awards season contenders start getting buzz as we head into the fall and winter months, it's also a place where hidden horror gems can sneak up on you as we head into Halloween. Like many film festivals, TIFF has its own genre programming block called Midnight Madness where horror, thrillers, and the wilder side of filmmaking can be experienced. This year, a handful of titles have been getting some decent buzz, ranging from "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard making his directorial debut with the slasher comedy "Hell of a Summer" to "Dream Scenario" putting Nicolas Cage into everyone's dreams and plenty in between.
Let's take a closer look at some of the horror titles drumming up noise at TIFF 2023.

Vengeance and action go hand in hand, with revenge frequently serving as the central motivator for a single action hero to punch and slice their way through hordes of enemies. Such is the case with Boy Kills World, the feature debut from director Moritz Mohr. While its revenge plot may not offer any genuine narrative surprises, the manic B-movie energy combined with frenetic, gory action infuses a familiar conceit with a sense of video game fun.
Bill Skarsgård stars as Boy, a deaf-mute honed as a weapon for much of his life by a mysterious Shaman (The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian). Boy’s sole aim through over a decade of brutal training in the jungle is to take down the ruthless tyrant Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen). Hilda and her nefarious clan, including players Sharlto Copley, Michelle Dockery, and Brett Gelman, have created a dystopian Hunger Games-like world that involves an annual culling.

Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World, with its brutal violence, high-flying kicks and cruel comedy, has the German filmmaker aiming to change how you see his country’s movies.
“We wanted to make something that had some fun because Germany rarely has fun. There’s no action movies, there’s a few horror movies. It’s mostly art house,” Mohr says. Expect wicked fun, not an existential dirge, from Boy Kills World, as Mohr’s dry, sarcastic humor saturates a dystopian fever dream that follows Boy (Bill Skarsgård) a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination who escapes to the jungle when his family is murdered by a gang.
There, he’s trained by a mysterious shaman, (Yayan Ruhian) to suppress the child in him and become a strong, shrewd instrument of death to avenge his family and kill the gang leader.
