The third episode of The Changeling finally revealed what Emma did to Brian and Apollo, and it is terrifying. The series seems to be coming into its own, and in the third episode, we got a hint about the ‘fairytale’ aspect of the series, which up until now had just been lurking in the background. The incident with Emma gutted Apollo, and he found a few things in the aftermath. He was told a secret that his mother, Lillian, had kept hidden from him right from the beginning. It demystifies Apollo’s childhood to a certain extent, but Lillian’s secret may not reveal the entire truth to Apollo about Brian, his father. There is a lot to unpack, so here is a recap:
Spoilers Ahead
What did Emma do to her son, Brian?
In the previous episode, Emma was on the verge of doing something drastic because no one seemed to understand her anxiety.

As much as we here at /Film like to climb up on our soapboxes and carry on about the limits of The Volume and the StageCraft technology (which generate virtual settings using LED video walls), we also get why filmmakers have been flocking to use them in recent years. When you shoot outside on-location, you're inevitably subject to the whims of the natural environment. That means, for example, having to spend hours waiting for rainstorms or a cloudy sky to clear up just so you can get the precise lighting you need for a scene. It's even worse if you're filming in the desert. All it takes is a huge sandstorm to swoop in, and you may find yourself having to rebuild most of your sets.
Shooting in the desert can present other complications too, as director Denis Villeneuve discovered while bringing the desert world of Arrakis to life for "Dune.

The Changeling promised twisted fairytales, and that's what we got with the three-episode premiere.
Unfortunately, despite an excellent plot and flawless acting, the new Apple TV+ horror fantasy struggles out of the gate because of its dreadful attempt to tell a story across multiple timelines.
The Changeling Season 1 Episode 1 started strongly enough, but the pace slowed considerably on The Changeling Season 1 Episode 2, and The Changeling Season 1 Episode 3 became the biggest chore to watch.
It's unfortunate because Lakeith Stanfield and Clark Backo turn in awards-worthy performances as this husband and wife whose lives are changed forever, seemingly out of nowhere.
The series needed to establish this bond between Apollo and Emmy off the bat because it made the horror they endured so much more challenging to watch.
Don't get me wrong: Many scenes could have been left on the cutting room floor because we understood their bond when they saw each other.

Every horror story is already somewhat spoiled.
Whether it’s a movie, TV show, book, or short story, the horror classification alone is a tip off to the audience; a warning that despite any good fortune these characters appear to have, their lives are about to take a sharp downward turn.
So unfolds the first installment of Apple’s “The Changeling,” based on the 2017 horror novel by Victor Lavalle and adapted for television by Kelly Marcel. Episode 101 wears the disguise of romantic drama, the story of Apollo Kagwa (Lakeith Stanfield) and Emma Valentine (Clark Backo), a rare bookseller and librarian who fall in love. There’s even a parallel flashback to Apollo’s mother Lillian (Alexis Louder) and father Brian (Jared Abrahamson). Packaged with Melina Matsoukas’ direction, Marcell Rev’s cinematography, and Lavalle himself narrating lofty ideas about fate and identity, you could almost forget briefly forget that promised seed...

Given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, there hasn’t been a lot of casting news over the last two months, but Deadline has reported that Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to star as the US President in The Beast.
The independent package was revealed at the Toronto International Film Festival market and has an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA. Deadline’s report states that the project was also packaged prior to the beginning of the strikes. The Beast refers to the Presidential limousine, which is an impenetrable tank stocked with grenades, shotguns, armour-plating, and bullet-and-bomb proofing. In addition to Samuel L. Jackson, The Beast also stars Joel Kinnaman as Secret Service agent Taft.
“When a militia of unidentified hostiles coordinates a coup against the U.S. presidency, the President (Jackson) uncovers the extent of The Beast’s highly classified offensive capabilities,” reads the synopsis of The Beast. “Separated from his wife,...

Apple TV+ is launching the genre-blending The Changeling on September 8, 2023 with the release of the first three episodes. Oscar nominee Lakeith Stanfield leads the cast of what the streaming service describes as a fairytale for grown-ups, a horror story, and a parenthood fable.
Joining Stanfield (“Apollo Kagwa”) in the eight-episode series are Clark Backo (“Emmy”), Adina Porter (“Lillian Kagwa”), Samuel T. Herring (“William Wheeler”), Alexis Louder (“young Lillian”), and Jared Abrahamson (“Brian West”). Malcolm Barrett (“Patrice”) is featured as a special guest star.
Just ahead of its premiere, the drama based on Victor Lavalle’s bestselling novel sits at 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Huff Post’s Candice Frederick says “The Changeling is an extravagant genre offering about… well, many different things. Most profoundly, it’s about the natural horrors of life and death — as well as the stories we tell ourselves and those we love.”
