FilmNation Entertainment and Bleecker Street will partner on Treasure, the new drama from German director Julia von Heinz (And Tomorrow the Entire World) starring Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry as father and daughter. The two companies will co-distribute the film together in the U.S. and jointly handle worldwide sales.
Set in the 1990s, Treasure is adapted from Lily Brett’s best-selling autobiographical novel Too Many Men. Dunham plays Ruth, a neurotic businesswoman who takes her father Edek (Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a road trip through Poland to make sense of her family’s past. Zbigniew Zamachowski (Three Colors franchise) co-stars. Treasure will have its world premiere as a Berlinale Special screening at the Berlin Film Festival next month and FilmNation and Bleecker will kick off sales talk with international buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market.

Chicago – The astonishing financial success of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is a testament to the enduring power of spectacle. Sure, Charles Hart and Robert Stilgoe’s pedestrian lyrics may have all the charm of plywood, but audiences couldn’t care less with an unstable chandelier dangling over their heads and a wealth of atmospheric scenery filling their field of vision.
What made “Opera” so memorable wasn’t the lyrics or even the love triangle between the beautiful Christine Daaé, the prissy Raoul and the mysterious Phantom. It was Webber’s melodies, particularly the iconic half-tone chords that open the show (which Roger Waters alleges was plagiarized from his song “Echoes”) that truly linger in audience’s memories. “Phantom” may not be a great show, but it certainly makes for a great night of live theatre.
Blu-ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

SXSW's massive Interactive conference launched this past Friday, showcasing new technology and games on the cutting edge of the digital world. The selections in Indiewire's latest curation of Hulu's Documentaries page are loosely inspired by the increasingly important event, focusing on gaming then and now, as well as considerations of the impact of technology on our lives. With the thousands of options available to today's gamers, sporting inventive concepts and advanced graphics and gameplay, it's hard to imagine simpler times when players spent hours trying to manipulate a small silver ball around obstacles. Brett Sullivan's "Special When Lit" aims to reintroduce the world to the wonders of pinball and remind them that it was one of the most popular and lucrative forms of popular entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s, even outstripping the profits of the Us film industry. Fast forward a couple of decades, and we enter the Golden Age of.

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...
