McG is in negotiations to helm the long-in-development “Hunter Killer” for Relativity.
Based on Don Keith and George Wallace's novel "Firing Point," the story follows an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy Seal team to rescue Russia’s president, taken prisoner during a military coup. The two sides team to stop a rogue Russian general from igniting World War III.
The project was originally going to team filmmaker Antonie Fuqua and actor Gerard Butler, but the pair eventually departed and made "Olympus Has Fallen" instead.
Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing from a script by Jamie Moss, John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt. McG just wrapped "3 Days to Kill" for the company.

Hunter Killer hit a minor bump in the road when Phillip Noyce dropped it, but this was soon patched up with the help of Antoine Fuqua. Now that the Training Day helmer is getting behind the camera, this thing can start to take shape. And what better place to start than casting?
We’ve already heard rumors of Gerard Butler being approached for the lead character, “Capt. Joe Glass, the commander of the USS Toledo,” and those seem to be going somewhere; Variety reports that the actor is currently in talks about taking that role, while Sam Worthington is the top contender for the part of “Bill Beaman, the leader of a special Navy Seal unit called the Dev Group.”

There’s yet another film that Antoine Fuqua is lined up to helm: Variety reports the Training Day director as being the new man for Hunter Killer, which Phillip Noyce was attached to until last month. The project, based on George Wallace and Don Keith‘s Firing Point, follows “an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy Seal team to rescue the Russian president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian general from igniting World War III.”
The script has been written by Jamie Moss, John Kolvenbach, and Arne Schmidt; Neil Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing alongside Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity. Those backers are a good thing for Fuqua, since most of his movies have been falling apart from a lack of concrete financing. This most recently happened with his boxing drama, Southpaw, which is set to star Eminem.

Is Antoine Fuqua trying to compete with Guillermo del Toro for the 'guy attached to the most projects' award? In the past year alone we've heard that he might direct a Tupac Shakur film, a movie called Afterburn [1], a Chinese epic, the Eminem boxing film Southpaw, the Summit project [2] Storming Las Vegas, and a Showtime documentary about Suge Knight [3]. Some of those films have fallen apart, others, like Tupac, are struggling to get off the ground. (Fuqua is evidently no longer attached to make Tupac.) Southpaw didn't work out at Dreamworks and is being shopped around. And now Fuqua is nearly signed to direct Hunter Killer for Relativity. Earlier this year, Phillip Noyce was going to make the film [4], but he dropped out. (Taken director Pierre Morel was also a possible director at one point.) Variety [5] announces Fuqua as being in talks; Afterburn was also a Relativity deal, so while...

"Hunter Killer" Gets Director Antoine Fuqua
Antoine Fuqua is in final negotiations to take the helm of Relativity Media’s “Hunter Killer.” Based on the novel “Firing Point” from George Wallace and Don Keith, the story follows an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy Seal team in order to rescue Russia’s president, taken prisoner during a military coup. The two sides team up to stop a rogue Russian general from igniting World War III.
Three writers have penned the script, they are, Jamie Moss, John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt.
Variety reports that Fuqua is one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood “but his projects keep stalling out.” Dreamworks recently pulled the plug on his Eminem-led boxing film, “Southpaw,” he was supposed to spend the summer shooting Morgan Creek’s Tupac Shakur biopic but that film still hasn’t found its lead, and Fuqua is no longer attached to direct.

It turns out rumors from earlier this week are true. Salt director Phillip Noyce will next direct the thriller Hunter Killer, from a script by Jamie Moss (X-Men: First Class, Escape from New York), John Kolvenbach (Coney Island) and Arne Schmidt (Chain Reaction).
The film follows “an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy Seal team to rescue the Russian president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III.” While I really disliked Salt, mostly due to the script, Noyce still has some action directing chops left. This premise has an old school vibe that could reflect his earlier work like Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.
Production begins late this year and you can read the full press release below.
