Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.
But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Probably not but, just for fun, let’s pretend that Rotten Tomatoes are in charge of this year’s Academy Awards.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, Northern Comfort director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson and actor Simon Manyonda had a philosophical discussion about what they hope the audience will take home from the movie.
Northern Comfort is a dark comedy about a diverse group of people in London who, sharing a chronic fear of flying, join a course in hopes of overcoming their fears. However, the movie takes a twist when the group goes on a mandatory trip to Iceland in order to complete their “fear of flying” course, which leaves them stranded in the cold Arctic to overcome their demons and find their way home.
The Icelandic director explained that the concept for the movie came from a family member who suffers from a fear of flying and took a similar course to overcome it. “I thought to myself, ‘yeah this is a quite good premise.

The romcom has lapsed into such an anaemic state that Rye Lane feels like a miracle. Here’s an entry into the genre that doesn’t surrender to thinkpiece-ready neuroticism. And doesn’t demand two A-listers shoulder the entire job of summoning chemistry from a dead-eyed script. And, most refreshingly, doesn’t subsist purely on nostalgia for romcoms of old.
Raine Allen-Miller’s breezy, south London-set debut is exactly what we deserve from this genre. With one foot in the present and the other in the past, it follows a day-long flirtation – à la Before Sunrise – between two of life’s loveable losers, Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson). Both are shipwrecked by post-breakup shame. But when Yas catches Dom in the act of a not-so-private sob session in an art gallery bathroom, the pair become unlikely allies in the search for emotional closure. Yas subs in as Dom...

Icelandic writer-director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson (“Under the Tree”) makes a smooth transition to English-language directing with the high-concept comedy “Northern Comfort,” co-written with longtime collaborators Halldór Laxness Halldórsson and Tobias Munthe. It centers on a disparate group of people who share a disabling fear of air travel, which they are trying to overcome through a high-end fearless flyers course. As a final challenge, the class is scheduled for a short, roundtrip “exposure” flight during which they should face and conquer their phobias. But this practical plan soon runs into some literal and figurative turbulence. Combining human drama and absurdist comedy, “Northern Comfort” should fly into other festivals before making a comfortable landing at a boutique art-house distributor or streamer.

Charades has boarded “Northern Comfort,” an Icelandic black comedy by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson (“Under the Tree”) which is world premiering at SXSW.
The well-established sales company has unveiled an exclusive clip for the film ahead of its world premiere in the Narrative Spotlight section.
“Northern Comfort” follows a bunch of phobic flyers, including a middle-aged property developer, a couple of twenty-something influencers and a former Sas-serviceman turned crime-novelist in his 60’s. Seeking to overcome their fear of flying, they embark on a high-end therapeutic course on a flight whose final destination is Iceland. But the experience ends up being a complete nightmare. When the group finally steps onto solid ground, their anxiety levels are off the charts and the idea of taking a flight back home to London becomes an unbearable prospect. As their intended flight is repeatedly delayed, they end up in a remote luxury ‘wellness’ hotel somewhere in the bleak,...

TV Fanatic: Firstly, could you speak a bit about how you got involved with Pennyworth?
I got an audition from my agent. She said, "I don't know if you'd be interested in this one."
I was like, "yeah, definitely interested in possibly playing Lucius Fox."
The audition came through saying they were looking for a young Morgan Freeman. I remember feeling like Morgan Freeman isn't Lucius Fox. Lucius Fox is Lucius Fox. And they also want me to interpret a Lucius Fox that's happened before. So I just went with my own creativity and my own kind of sense of who this character is.

Bruno Heller has a funny way — quite literally — of describing the move of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler from Epix to HBO Max.
First, imagine you’re in a grocery store and on the hunt for, ahem, something tasty to enjoy. “Years ago, people had very few choices. Now it’s much more like a supermarket,” explains Heller, who created the DC drama that stars Jack Bannon in the title role. “I don’t mean to be crass about this, but you’re on a shelf and where you are on the shelf becomes very important in a way that it wasn’t before. So platforms matter. We are just very excited to be in the center aisle, in the middle of shelf, next to the cornflakes instead of up there with the maple honey granola with soy granules in it. All of those cereals have an audience,...

The film focuses on Raye (Gina Jones), a woman trapped in an abusive relationship. The film charts her struggle to survive, her journey to escape, and how the cycle of violence affects everyone who comes into contact with it.
The Sun Also Rises is a beautiful film with an ultimately positive message of redemption; it pays homage to the strength of the human spirit. The film draws inspiration from the Ernest Hemmingway book Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises, portraying Raye’s journey through the lens of a metaphorical bull run. Producer Shane McCormick...

HBO Max has closed a deal to bring DC origin series Pennyworth to its platform for a third season.
The series, which aired for two seasons on Epix, has been renewed for a third season and will make the move to the WarnerMedia digital platform in 2022.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV was in talks to bring the show over to its sibling streamer. The deal also includes the first two seasons of the Batman butler prequel launching on the service early next year.
Deadline understands that Epix will get a second window, per the deal.
The move, announced at the DC Fandome event, is not a huge as the MGM-owned cable network has been trimming its slate of scripted originals and the show premiered before the studio launched its own streaming service. It will join other DC titles such as Titans, Doom Patrol and Peacemaker on HBO Max.

It’s pretty impressive that Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who twisted Gotham into a funhouse mirror image of the comic book source material, got invited to do it a second time with their Epix series Pennyworth, purportedly the origins of Alfred. But which Alfred? And for which version of Batman?
Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season, with Covid-19 interruptions, finally arrived at the end of 2020 and is now available on a two-disc Blu-ray set from Warner Archive. You can decide for yourself if the series needed its connections to the Batman mythos, needed to exist at all or is entertaining. As with Gotham, the chaotic and uneven storytelling continues here in this weird, alternate reality of the world.
While it looks like the 1960s, the politics of England is decided more fascistic, and lots of secret organizations are having a secret war with the kingdom’s fate at stake.

"I just feel, perpetually, like I'm out of my own comfort zone." Another excellent short that is worth your time to watch. Alex's Dream is a 9-minute short film written and directed by British actor Jack Cooper Stimpson. It originally premiered in 2018 and is now available online to watch thanks to Short of the Week. Alex Lawther stars as Alex, a young man who arrives uninvited to a party and after a set of excruciating interactions with other guests, is forced to recount a memorable dream he's had about being on a fishing boat. The film is described by Stimpson as "a meditation on oneiric experience in cinema, mental health, talking dogs and fishermen." The short also stars Emma Corrin, Chris New, Sam Haygarth, and Simon Manyonda. There's some fascinating nuance in this short, and heaps of uncomfortable anxiety. Lawther is also so incredibly talented. Thanks to ...

Pennyworth Season 2 is coming soon to Epix, continuing to fulfill the show’s touted remit as a prequel to the Batman mythos, notably with Alfred’s eventual arrival in Gotham City.
Having debuted on July 28, 2019, Pennyworth is the product of creator/executive producer/writer Bruno Heller and executive producer/director Danny Cannon (CSI franchise), and served as a quick reunion of key personnel from another Batman prequel series, Fox’s Gotham, which had just ended its five-season run that April. However, any associations end there, since Pennyworth is set in London in the 1960s, therefore—after doing some quick math—eliminating the notion of any continuity connection with the contemporary-set Gotham. Indeed, Pennyworth turned out to be a colorful crime series with swinging ‘60s aesthetics and a slightly over-the-top charm that’s not bound by its nevertheless-looming pre-Batman status.

Actors Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters took the dais at Ccxp to talk about HBO fantasy drama His Dark Materials, based on the best-selling novels by Philip Pullman. The two went into detail about their characters and how it has been like working on such an ambitious story about Dafne Keen’s Lyra, who, after searching for her kidnapped friend, uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.
Keen wasn’t able to attend the panel and sent a message of thanks via a video before the actors talked about the show, which tackles intense and heavy topics and themes is just as relevant to children as it is to adults. “We shouldn’t underestimate children,” said Peters. The show is called His Dark Materials. But who are we kidding? It’s all about her.
HBO’s latest fantasy epic struck gold when it cast Ruth Wilson as its villain, Mrs. Coulter. In lesser hands, the sinister head of the General Oblation Board and leader of its “gobblers” would be a one-dimensional child-stealing monster, with the occasional glimmer of doubt or remorse. But thanks to The Affair actor, she emerges as a full-fledged human, overwhelmed by her own emotions even as she overpowers everyone in her path.

Scott is set to play Colonel John Parry, the father of Will Parry, who is being played by Amir Wilson. Parry, who is also known as Doctor Stanislaus Grumman or Jopari, accidentally travelled to Lyra’s world where he became a renowned scholar and shaman. His dæmon was called Sayan Kötör and had the form of an osprey.
He joins the second season of the drama with season one scheduled to air later this year.
The news was revealed in a picture between Sherlock star Scott and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Philip Pullman adaptation, written by Jack Thorne, is produced by Bad Wolf.

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.
Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.
