This article contains spoilers for Superman & The Authority.
The Man of Steel of Superman & The Authority looks a little different than you might be used to. Graying at the temples, a hint of smile lines around his eyes, and a capeless outfit that looks equally ready for some serious work in a laboratory or a super-powered street fight. It’s an older, wiser, Superman, sporting a look befitting a man with a teenage son and years of experience under his belt, and he brings all the patience and wisdom that you’d expect him to have as he reaches superheroic middle age.
And while this look is a holdover from the old 5G publishing initiative, it’s about the only thing from Didio’s Superman pitch that stuck around.
“We went to this restaurant and Dan proposed this notion,” Superman & The Authority writer Grant Morrison tells us by phone. “He said,...

DC Comics "I Am Batman" #0, introducing a new 'Black Batman', is available August 10, 2021, written by John Ridley and illustrated by Travel Foreman, with covers by Foreman, Derrick Chew and Dave Wilkins:
"....'Future State' gave readers a preview of things to come with 'Jace Fox' as the new 'Batman'. But now his debut in the core line arrives with a bang. Picking up immediately from the events of 'The Next Batman: Second Son', Jace thrusts himself into action when the 'Magistrate' crackdown on 'Alleytown' begins, using armor he's found in the abandoned 'Hibernaculum'. The age of a new 'Dark Knight' starts now..."

Russell Crowe is in Thor: Love and Thunder. Cool. Russell Crowe is playing a god in Thor: Love and Thunder. Cooler. Russell Crowe is playing the most incorrigible, inappropriately horny god-father of them all as Zeus. Impossibly cool.
Crowe revealed in an interview to Joy Breakfast With the Murphys that “I’m gonna get on my bicycle. I’m gonna ride up to Disney Fox Studios, and around about 9:15 I shall be Zeus!”
He also notes that this is his last day of filming on Thor: Love and Thunder. “It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Hopefully “Zeus-ing about” means he’ll be behaving poorly and getting his absolute ass handed to him by Hera, all with that trademark Taika Waititi wit and humor about it.
The introduction of the denizens of Mt. Olympus to the MCU is a pretty momentous occasion.

Marvel Studios celebrated Simu Liu’s birthday by giving us all a present: the first trailer for Shang Chi and the Ten Rings. And there’s a lot to get excited about: a ripped Liu kicking several things; some of the best looking fight shots in the MCU to date; Awkwafina being generally delightful.
Watch it here if you haven’t already…
But buried in the middle of the trailer was a very quick flash of something fascinating:
Was that an Iron Fist?
Iron Fist and the MCU
Up until now, the first character who jumps to mind when you think “Marvel martial artists” is likely Danny Rand, the Iron Fist. Rand was part of Marvel’s wave of characters capitalizing on mid-70s pop culture. He was created by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane, and Bill Everett, and he had some staying power: he was spun out of Marvel Premiere...

Al Ewing will take over a new Guardians of the Galaxy series for Marvel.
With Donny Cates taking over the writing duties on Thor, there was room for a new writer to pick up Guardians of the Galaxy. And at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con, the new team was announced: Juan Cabal (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) on art, and Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) writing.
Ewing is currently lighting the world on fire with Joe Bennett on Immortal Hulk. The book is the first to go full monster movie with Bruce Banner's alter-ego in some time, and it's by far the most successful because there are enormous helpings of body and psychological horror added in. It is weird and discomforting and gorgeous and easily one of the best things Marvel has published this decade.

Marvel Comics' "Black Cat" #3, in support of Columbia Pictures developing "Black Cat", live-action feature, is written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Travel Foreman, with covers by J. Scott Campbell and In-Hyuk Lee, available August 7, 2019:
"...surprising no one, a heist by 'Black Cat' of the 'Sanctum Sanctorum' belonging to 'Doctor Strange' has gone horribly wrong.
"Now, 'Felicia Hardy' and her crew are under attack in a place where any wrong turn or opened door means certain death. It would take an insane amount of luck to get out alive..."
"'Spider-Man' connects to a lot of characters," said Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures. "There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized and unique..."

What does Avengers: Endgame mean for the Black Widow movie? We look at some possibilities.
This article contains nothing but Avengers: Endgame spoilers. Turn Back Now!
As the culmination of a decade of movies and the capstone of a phenomenon that started with the first Avengers movie, Avengers: Endgame’s focus was rightly on wrapping up the stories of the original six Avengers brought together by the Chitauri invasion. And nobody’s fate was more tied off than Black Widow’s - Natasha sacrificed herself to give Hawkeye the Soul Stone and give the Avengers a shot at saving an incalculable number of people.
But...doesn’t Black Widow have a solo movie coming out? We admit to being a little perplexed by the choice to have her die. How could Marvel put out a Black Widow solo movie with the star lying dead as disco in a Voromir valley?...

Steve Orlando on his Superman story in DC's Nuclear Winter Special, the future Dcu of Electric Warriors, and Martian Manhunter.
Let’s say you’re one of the two biggest comic companies in a pop culture world overtaken by comics. You’ve got a massive gap in your continuity timeline, bookended by two passionate, vocal fanbases. What do you do?
Let’s ask a different question: you’ve got one character from your flagship team who’s a relatively blank slate. He’s seen a ton of love sent his way as part of the team book, but his most memorable backstory is from a seminal, all-time classic pinnacle-of-the-medium type book and an episode of the cartoon he was in. Who do you go to and say “Hey, fill these in?”
If you’re DC Comics, you ask the guy who made the Justice League meet the God of Super Heroes.

Let the subplots commence. Civil War 2 is chugging along with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man Number 1. I’ve found that with event stories such as this, some of the subplot stories that you find in other comics vary in quality. Sometimes their addition to the main event flows nicely, such as Ms. Marvel’s use in the Secret Wars event. Sometimes the results are mixed such as the Black Widow series from Nathan Edmondson.
To start, I enjoyed this issue. While it definitely adds to the Civil War 2 story, it doesn’t feel forced in the least. It feels like a natural extension of where Brian Bendis and Dave Marquez are taking things. The characters feel real which can be tough to accomplish when dealing with people with such amazing abilities. When Peter Parker and Johnny Storm meet up under circumstances fit for a 1970’s sitcom, their back...

Review: This was a fun little lead up to Captain America: Steve Rogers #1. It doesn’t really show anything about the Hydra/Cap storyline, more or less it’s a standard Captain America taking down the bad Hydra thugs story. There is a follow up with Sam Wilson Cap teaming up with the new Falcon as well. Neither is really something that’s stand alone as both are tie-ins to their own respective series. I was kind of hoping for something of a Hydra/Cap teaser here,...

Marvel Comics has released the first look at Alex Ross's cover art for Amazing Spider-Man #15, and as you can see, it features Mary Jane wearing the Iron Spider Armor that made its debut during the first Civil War event series.
If you've been keeping up with the comics, then you know Mary Jane has been working with Tony Stark lately, and Civil War II is coming soon. As ComicBook.com points out, maybe this is a sign of things to come.
Marvel also announced Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man, which is a four-issue miniseries by writer Christos Gage and artist Travel Foreman. The comic obviously ties in with Civil War II, which revolves around a new Inhuman who has the ability to see crimes before they occur. The superheroes are then forced to choose whether or not to use this Inhuman’s power to wield “predictive justice.” Yesterday, Marvel...

Animal Man: The Hunt
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Travel Foreman, Jeff Huet, Steve Pugh, & John Paul Leon
Published by DC Comics
Jeff Lemire’s Animal Man stands out as one of the strongest books from the early days of the New 52. The story follows the titular Animal Man, a.k.a. Buddy Baker, a former stuntman, turned father, turned superhero, turned animal rights activist. His powers were granted when aliens experimented on him and gave Buddy Baker access to a morphogenetic field entwined with all animal life on Earth from which he can draw many abilities: the reflexes of a fly, the strength of a rhinoceros, and many more.
As he’s introduced, much of Buddy’s superheroing has taken a backseat to being a devoted father and husband, dealing with family finances more than street criminals. That all changes when his four year old daughter, Maxine, starts...

Taking its cue directly from the final page of The Court of Owls where the Court declares all-out war on Gotham, it’s battle-stations for Batman and the Bat-family as the Court’s army of elite assassins, the Talons, target nearly 40 of Gotham’s most prominent figures – but can Batman and co. save them from certain death? The Night of the Owls has begun…
This technically isn’t Volume 2 in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series but a collection of the numerous crossovers where nearly all of the Bat-books had an issue featuring that series’ character facing a Talon to help Batman thwart the Court’s plans. But this is the book that happens in between Court of Owls (Vol 1) and City of Owls (Vol 2) and should be considered a big piece in this story arc. For reference, the Night of the Owls hardback...

Once again, my Facebook friend Jim Engel tipped me off to another jumping-on point for a rant. I think I owe him a Coke. Seems someone at the Wall Street Journal perked up at the news that the Avengers crossed the bajillion bucks meter, and it stemmed a very obvious question: If the movie is that popular, shouldn’t there be some kind of carry-over to the parent media? And the simple answer is one we comic fans hate to admit: Ain’t no carry-over cash coming through the doors of the local comic shop over this (or any other) movie. So the WSJ writer, one Tim Marchman, decided to take his book review of “Leaping Tall Buildings” and turn it into a tirade on the industry I want so badly to call home. Now don’t get me wrong, Marchman makes a few solid points. Ok, he makes a lot of them.

DC Comics first wave of New 52 annuals have arrived with one of the most noteworthy releases being the Animal Man Annual #1. Written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Timothy Green II, Animal Man is perfect in the fact that it stands on its own while giving us a glimpse of what lies ahead for the book’s title character.
The majority of the book focuses on the war between the three elements: the Red, the Green, and the Rot. Lemire begins the story with Animal Man’s daughter Maxine and the former avatar of the Red Socks (the cat we can’t help but love) going into the forest so he can take a tinkle. Given Maxine’s new role as the chosen avatar of the Red (aka the protector) she begins to inquire about the history of the elements. Lemire takes this opportunity to flesh out the significance of...

Animal Man artist Travel Foreman has revealed why he stepped down from the DC Comics title. The illustrator explained that he left the series to join Birds of Prey because he found its subject matter emotionally draining following the death of his mother. "I needed to take on a job after my mother died (to deal with the financial end of someone being sick for a while and then passing) and Animal Man was the only thing DC was going to let me do. Which in any other time frame would have been perfect," Foreman wrote on the Cbr forum. "Really the context of me dealing with the death of my mom and drawing the kind of content in Animal Man just burned me out sooner than I thought." Steve Pugh will fill in for (more)...

DC Comics has announced a shuffle of artists on four of its titles. Animal Man, Birds of Prey, Resurrection Man and Suicide Squad will be affected by the changes, reports The Source. Animal Man penciller Travel Foreman will be moving to Birds of Prey from issue #9's launch into the Batman crossover 'Night of the Owls'. He will be replaced on the title by 1990s Animal Man artist Steve Pugh. Birds of Prey artist Jesus Saiz will switch to Resurrection Man, with (more)...

Travel Foreman, the artist behind the DC Comics’ Animal Man, will soon be moving on from the hit series and will be replaced by famed illustrator Steve Pugh. The announcement for Pugh’s return to the series came back in December, which had many of us excited to see the artist return to a series that helped to be defined by his classic work done on the Animal Man series put out by Vertigo in the early 1990s.
“For me, it’s awesome to be returning to a book that was such a milestone in my creative life and with Jeff, a killer writer who’s been punching Animal Man through the ceiling!” said Pugh. “Yeah, I was buying the book already but now I don’t have to wait so long to find out what happens next!”

Jeff Lemire and Travel Foremen continue their work on the Animal Man series, which has already begun to prove itself a classic in the making. What began as a story that only dabbled in the disturbing has blossomed into a full-on superhero horror comic. On top of that, Lemire and Foreman have pushed Animal Man into the center stage spotlight, capturing the audience’s attention for a character that has never been a mainstream figure when compared to the superstars of the DC universe.
Animal Man #5 picks up immediately where we left off in the last issue with Ellen (Animal Man’s wife) fighting off one of the grotesque agents of The Rot, who’s been sent to find and assimilate Buddy Baker’s daughter, Maxine. While this is occurring, Animal Man and his daughter have finally left the realm of The Red, where they’ve been learning about The...

Book: Animal Man #5
Written By: Jeff Lemire
Art By: Travel Foreman and Steve Pugh (pages 17-20), Jeff Huet (pages 1-16)
Cover By: Travel Foreman
Published By: DC Comics
Price: $2.99
This is one of the best titles of the New 52. Already, other titles have begun to experience a drop in quality (Justice League International, Superboy and Legion Lost, among others, spring to mind), but every month Jeff Lemire builds the anticipation in the pages of Animal Man.
The character is not a mainstream figure among the heroes of the Dcu, which allows Lemire to take risks that wouldn’t fly in the pages of Superman or Batman. Yes, Animal Man is a superhero, but this is a horror comic without question. Concepts surrounding life and death, growing and rotting and other mature ideas are intertwined throughout all of the action, resulting in a book that is rewarding on an emotional and intellectual level.

Earlier this Fall, DC Comics launched a massive overhaul, with all books reverting to #1, and while it’s been interesting to say the least, it’s also been surprising. Case in point: Animal Man, reborn as a psychedelic horror tale to behold. Fangoria spoke with author Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) about the Animal Man relaunch during DC Comics’ The New 52, depicting the gory imagery with artist Travel Foreman, and his upcoming action/horror comic, Frankenstein: Agent Of S.H.A.D.E.

Talking to Comic Book Resources in their regular "Axel-In-Charge" interview, Marvel's E-i-c commented on the success of the DC reboot and refused to confirm or deny the rampant fan speculation that Avengers Vs. X-Men will result in some sort of similar relaunch. It is of course highly unlikely that this will happen (Marvel's sales are already closing in on the post "New 52" numbers DC are achieving) but check out what Alonso had to say here. "Look, if the DC reboot had tanked, it would have been bad for everybody. With the talent associated with that reboot, the unprecedented investment they made in promoting it and the incentives they provided to retailers to order deep, they had to hit big. They got a strong launch and I give them credit. I enjoyed several of their titles -- especially the Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo "Batman" and Jeff Lemire & Travel Foreman's "Animal Man.

Animal Man, one of the more cerebral books in ‘The New 52′, continues to remain strong as one of the leading comic book titles from DC Comics.
In the latest issue, we continue to follow Buddy Bakerand his daughter Maxine as they fight the evil manifestations belonging to The Rot, the invasive enemy that threatens The Red. At the end of issue #3, we find that Buddy and Maxine are in the throws of battle against three agents of The Rot within the surreal realm known as The Red. This grisly encounter coincides with the events in the real world where Buddy Baker’s wife and his son are unknowingly taken captive by an agent of The Rot, disguised as a friendly face.
This issue provides a healthy bit of backstory for The Red, which is essentially the source of Animal Man’s superpowers, explaining the significance of Baker’s daughter to...

Artist Steve Pugh will be returning to illustrate on DC Comics’ Animal Man, back for the first time since 1995 when it was a shining Vertigo title. Now, beginning in March, Pugh will be joining writer Jeff Lemire and series regular Travel Foreman who has been doing an incredible job with the artwork.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Well, here’s something strange. Within a 72-hour period last week a half dozen people asked me if I had read the new, new Animal Man. During that same period, my daughter was asked the same question by one of her friends. Then I had lunch with comics writer Paul Kupperberg, so I asked him if he read the book. He said no, not yet, but a number of people told him he should.
Hmmmm. Word of mouth is either the best or the worst type of publicity. I noticed not a one of these folks said it was great; just that it was worth reading.
I enjoyed the original Animal Man – the one that was created by Dave Wood and Carmine Infantino in Strange Adventures 180, some 46 years ago. It was unusual in that it was only occasionally published, and the lead didn’t get his costume (one of Carmine...

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at Animal Man #1. Who's it by?
Animal Man #1 is written by Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) and drawn by Travel Foreman (Cla$$$$war). What's the history?
Buddy Baker - aka Animal Man - was created by Dave Wood and Carmine Infantino in Strange Adventures #180 in 1965, with a somewhat woolly origin story about gaining the power to borrow the abilities of different animals after he was caught near an exploding alien spaceship. Animal Man was promptly ignored for over 20 years, until a little-known young Scottish writer called Grant Morrison was asked in 1988 to revive the character following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths (an initiative which also gave rise to Neil Gaiman's legendary Sandman (more)...

Jeff Lemire has confirmed that DC's' 'New 52' titles Animal Man and Swamp Thing will have close links with each other. Lemire, who pens Animal Man alongside artist Travel Foreman, has hinted that the two titles may eventually come together for a potential crossover. "Our two books, we're kind of doing like sister titles, they are very connected," Lemire told Comic Book Resources. "While our separate storylines may start off being separate, and you can read each book separately, eventually both of what we have planned merges into one big story which has greater implications for the DC Universe.
