Germany’s Beta Film is bringing the love story between a Dutch prince and a beautiful Argentinian financier to the Croisette. The world premiere of “Máxima” screens out-of-competition at Canneseries on April 9 after being teased at the London TV Screenings in late February.
The six-hour-long episodes chronicle the whirlwind romance between the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, played by Martijn Lakemeier (“Goodbye Stranger”) and bubbly financier Máxima, played by Argentinian breakout Delfina Chaves (“The Secret of the Greco Family”). Directed by Saskia Diesing alongside Joosje Duk and Iván López Núñez, the series is adapted from Dutch journalist Marica Luyten’s biography on Queen Máxima, “Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland.”
Speaking to Variety ahead of the “Máxima” premiere at Cannes, Chaves says she feels “extremely lucky” for the opportunity to play the titular Queen onscreen, not only because of the role itself but also because of the scale of the production, which saw the...

Video games have always had a hit-or-miss relationship with adaptations. For every fantastic movie or series, there are countless mediocre cahs-grabs that pad studio IP and disappoint fans. But, most of those lackluster productions seem to be a thing of the past as we have entered a wonderful era of quality video game series and films. Two years ago, the long-awaited live-action take on Halo arrived on Paramount+ with Pablo Schreiber in the lead as Master Chief. The series was good enough to warrant a renewal but with a new showrunner brought in to pull the story in a new direction. The result is the far superior second season of Halo, premiering this week (read our review Here).

Plot: In season two, Master Chief John-117 leads his team of elite Spartans against the alien threat known as the Covenant. In the wake of a shocking event on a desolate planet, John cannot shake the feeling that his war is about to change and risks everything to prove what no one else will believe – that the Covenant are preparing to attack humanity’s greatest stronghold. With the galaxy on the brink, John embarks on a journey to find the key to humankind’s salvation, or its extinction — the Halo.
Review: Halo debuted in 2022 with fifteen years of development baggage heaped on top of it. With sky-high expectations for the series, anything less than a seismic shift in video game adaptations was bound to fail. Halo debuted with a muted response that found the Game of Thrones-esque intrigue and conspiracies distracting from what made the game one of the biggest franchises in history.

Master Chief is never seen without his helmet. While that statement may be true of the video-game franchise, the live-action Halo TV series wasted little time in removing Master Chief’s helmet. That move sparked a backlash from fans, but according to Halo star Pablo Schreiber… you’d better get used to it.
While speaking with Collider, Schreiber said that if seeing Master Chief without his helmet is truly a deal-breaker, then you might as well give up on the Halo TV series. “Hmm, well, that one you’ll have to get used to,” Schreiber said. “We established that in the first episode that was going to happen. That’s what our show is about; it’s about exploring the dynamic between John and Master Chief. So, if you’re not on board with that one, you might as well give up. As far as what to say to gamers,...

After many years in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Halo video game franchise finally made its way out into the world as a Paramount+ streaming series back in 2022, with the first episode of the show quickly becoming Paramount+’s most-watched premiere. But while the TV series is returning for a second season, which is scheduled to begin streaming on February 8th, the first season wasn’t met with overwhelming positivity, as many fans of the video game source material were disappointed by some of the choices made for the adaptation. Not even star Pablo Schreiber, who plays the character Master Chief on the show, was entirely happy with that first season. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Schreiber revealed there was even one element that he felt was a huge mistake: the romantic storyline with Master Chief and Makee (Charlie Murphy), which even included a sex scene.

For those who may be unaware, allow me to fill you in on a little secret: Gamers can be a pretty, er, passionate bunch. With superhero movies on the downswing and Hollywood's ever-imaginative bean counters frantically searching for their latest holy grail, video game adaptations appear to be the next Big Thing on the horizon. That comes with all sorts of sky-high expectations -- particularly when you're talking about one of the most beloved video game franchises ever made.
The somewhat hit-or-miss first season of "Halo" (to put it generously) often fell victim to that yawning gulf between expectations and reality. Bizarrely enough, the showrunners didn't bother adapting the events of the original game, "Combat Evolved," or even the hundreds of pages of material from the tie-in novels that detailed the origins of Master Chief and his cadre of super-soldiers. The story the Paramount+ series told instead was an oddball mix of head-scratching new material,...

Forget the helmet discourse. Should Master Chief fuck? It’s a question that has haunted Halo fans since John-117 got it on with human Covenant double agent Makee (Charlie Murphy) in the first season of the Paramount+ sci-fi series. However you may feel about this video game hero having sex for the first time in franchise history while Cortana watches on (I’m not making this up), Halo star Pablo Schreiber is taking a very clear stance on the matter.
“The decision to make the connection between Makee and John a romantic connection was a huge mistake,” Schreiber told SFX magazine (via GamesRadar) ahead of Halo season 2, which premieres next month. “I felt it was a huge mistake at the time and I argued against it and fought against it. But I am who I am. I don’t write the scripts. I only give my opinion. It wasn’t listened to.

The excitement is building for ‘Halo‘ season 2, and the new trailer from Paramount Plus has just upped the ante. Set to premiere on February 8th on Paramount Plus, the upcoming season promises to dive deep into the Halo universe, focusing on the critical planet Reach.
In this trailer, we’re immediately thrown into the thick of things. It opens with a voiceover, possibly from Makee (played by Charlie Murphy), who’s become a key figure in the series as Master Chief’s girlfriend. Her words are chilling, hinting at a dark future for Reach. She declares her intention to be ‘the instrument of their extinction,’ setting a grave tone for the season.
Master Chief, portrayed by Pablo Schreiber, faces overwhelming odds against the Covenant elites. The visuals are striking, showing the stark reality of the conflict. We also see Kai-125, played by Kate Kennedy, watching in despair as Covenant orbital strikes decimate Unsc ships.

Paramount+’s two-minute official trailer for the sci-fi thriller Halo teases that when events spiral out of control, we save what we can. “Looking at your faces, I do not see defeat and I do not see surrender,” says Captain Jacob Keyes (Danny Sapani). Pablo Schreiber (American Gods) returns to lead the video game-inspired series as Master Chief, Spartan-117, with Natascha McElhone (Californication) back as Dr. Halsey. The "Halo" season 2 trailer has arrived, and it brings with it the return of Master Chief who is now facing a new, familiar threat to those who played the games: The Covenant. Indeed, this season will see the sword-wielding aliens wreaking havoc. It appears that the folks at Paramount+ spared no expense in crafting the second season of this show, but will that be enough to turn it into the series everyone hoped it would be in the first place?
This trailer is very moody and overflowing with gloomy action. It's got a "Starship Troopers" vibe to it at times, just without all of the vibrant color and blatant political commentary. We're also, once again, seeing Master Chief without his helmet off an awful lot. Love it or hate it, that element of the show remains in place. It's very cinematic and a lot of the visual effects look big-screen worthy.

Paramount+ revealed the official trailer for Halo‘s second season, which has Pablo Schreiber returning as Master Chief John-117 as he leads a team of elite Spartans against the alien threat known as the Covenant.
The new season has showrunner David Wiener (Brave New World) taking over for last season’s Steven Kane, who oversaw physical production on the first season in Budapest, and Kyle Killen, who supervised writing and production in the United States.
The new footage shows plenty of space action, though it appears a bit dim and murky (at least, in this trailer):
Wiener, Schreiber and newcast member Joseph Morgan had unveiled the first new footage for season two at Ccxp in São Paulo in December.

“Halo” Season 2 is almost here, and it looks like Master Chief has his work cut out for him.
Paramount+ announced Saturday that the second season of the video game-based series will premiere on Feb. 8, sharing a dramatic teaser trailer. Instrumental music scores a rousing speech as our heroes embark on a doomed mission.
“You deserve the truth,” the trailer’s rousing speech begins. “The enemy is at our gates. Their numbers are overwhelming. Any Marine who makes this stand with us will not survive the day.”
But, there’s a reason for that sacrifice: “For every moment we hold the enemy at bay, more innocent people can escape. When they do, they will go forth and tell the story that you write today. You will be remembered.”
The word “remembered” echoes over the rest of the trailer as we see more action, including human-alien physical combat.

Eddie Murphy has always been open about the respect he has for late comic Richard Pryor. But Murphy’s admiration for Pryor might’ve grown even more after Pryor defended him against two other comic legends.
Richard Pryor told these comic veterans to apologize to Eddie Murphy for their behavior Eddie Murphy | Matt Winkelmeyer/FilmMagic
Murphy and Pryor even met a couple of times. One of the fondest memories the Nutty Professor star had of Pryor was when the comic came to his defense. Back in his much younger days, Murphy was on the cusp of his career breakthrough. He recalled doing standup at The Comedy Store in the 80s, sharing the same building with comedians Paul Mooney and John Witherspoon.
“I was like first-year SNL and I was killing, and I was like, ‘They’re giving me the light?’ I was only up for 10 minutes,’” Murphy said on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Eddie Murphy had the opportunity to work alongside comedy legend Richard Pryor in Harlem Nights. But circumstances made the collaboration not as fun as Murphy thought it was looking back.

Richard Pryor played a huge role in Eddie Murphy’s comedy career. The late actor was a major reason why Murphy wanted to be a comic in the first place.
“I have a really funny, funny family. But when I realized I wanted to be a comedian was seeing Richard Pryor. ‘Oh, that’s what I want to be,’” Murphy once said according to Vulture.
Murphy would later pick up where Pryor left off, becoming one of the biggest comics of all time. The comedian eventually starred alongside his idol Richard Pryor and several other comedy legends.

Richard Armitage has revealed that he partly improvised a scene in which he humps a pillow in the new Netflix show Obsession.
The erotic thriller, which arrived on the platform today (13 April), is an adaptation of Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel, Damage. It follows William (Richard Armitage), an accomplished surgeon, who gets wrapped up in an intense affair with his son’s fiancé, Anna (Charlie Murphy).
In one scene, William discovers his lover’s hotel room, where he hunts for her scent, sniffing around the bed before making a beeline for a pillow.
Talking about filming that scene, Armitage told Metro: “It was really unexpected because it was written as quite a different scene.
“There was a tissue with her imprint of her lipstick on which we didn’t feel necessarily worked.
“I was really conscious that it shouldn’t be in any way comedic so we sort of left it...

At a glance, Beef may look like a tale you already know well. The 10-part Netflix series follows a road rage spat between two dissatisfied millennials (Steven Yeun and Ali Wong) that snowballs into a bitter, dangerous feud. This notion – of a perennially escalating conflict between strangers – has been brought to the screen many times before, in everything from Steven Spielberg’s Duel to old Laurel and Hardy shorts like Big Business or Tit for Tat. “Blood will have blood,” said Macbeth, and it’s true. Or at the very least, property destruction will have property destruction.
But outside this age-old conceit, Beef is a distinctly modern parable, one that could only exist in the age of social media. In fact, its whole story – of misplaced rage, futile grudges and petty one-upmanship – is pretty much the perfect metaphor for online behaviour. Its very title tugs at this fact: these days,...

In Obsession, Netflix’s new Bdsm thriller, the chaos begins when femme fatale Anna Barton starts giving sex eyes to her future father-in-law. “Is that for me?” she breathes, before he erotically pops an olive into her mouth. This, by the way, is the first time they’ve spoken. I was nervous when I met my boyfriend’s dad for the first time, but at least I didn’t do anything that weird.
This is the problem with this adaptation of Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel, later made into a film in 1992 starring Jeremy Irons: it wants to gird our loins, but often it just makes us giggle. Obsession has been hailed as the successor to Fifty Shades of Grey, but instead it gives us an overload of shlock, foreboding string music and some depressing, grunty shagging.
Richard Armitage plays William, the horny dad in question who is also an important and brilliant surgeon.

Netflix’s Obsession changes the ending of the Josephine Hart novel Damage, from which it was adapted, by choosing to shift the story’s focus away from the male lead and onto the character of Anna Barton.
The TV series ends with Anna (Charlie Murphy) starting therapy, having decided to stop her destructive cycles and work through her traumatic past with a counsellor. In the final scenes of the series, she phoned her friend Peggy to say “I need you”. Peggy helped Anna away from her London flat in which she’d conducted the affair with Will and where her fiance Jay – Will’s son – had died, and away from Anna’s dysfunctional relationship with her mother. Obsession is a series starring Indira Varma and Charlie Murphy. It is based on the novel by Josephine Hart.
A dark-looking, good thriller story that, pretending to look daring, doesn’t take too many risks after all. However, it knows how to play the dark thriller at times (not always) and, in its irregularity, serves as a good piece of entertainment for fans of the genre.
About the Series
There are times when, on a blind date or in a movie, you have to know what you want and where you’re going. In other words, be clear about things. Obsession is a British series that, almost like a TV movie, pretends to go to the dark side of life, deep down, like in a Lou Reed-style but unwillingly to look at the David Lynch-side of things.
Woven with a deep moralistic tone, it is a film that...
