It wasn’t all fun and games on Ryan Murphy’s “The Glee Project”, apparently.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the final episode of the reality show, that aired from 2011 to 2012, contestants have spoken out about their time on the series.
Insider interviewed multiple stars of the show, which was dedicated to finding “Glee”‘s next big star, with season 2 contestant Abraham Lim admitting: “There were so many great elements of the show, but it was also really anxiety-inducing and there was a lot of trauma. Trauma bonds were made.”
Executive producer Shauna Minoprio insisted it was all about who Murphy wanted to write a “Glee” character for.
“What’s interesting about the show is, this was about somebody’s creative vision,” Minoprio told the publication. “It wasn’t about who’s the best singer or dancer. It was about who Ryan Murphy was the most excited to write a character for.

There was a time when “Glee” dominated pop culture, and as a result, a reality competition spinoff was briefly in the spotlight as well. But, according to some of the contestants on “The Glee Project,” that spinoff series actually fostered “a lot of trauma.”
In a new oral history with Insider, former winners and runners-up of “The Glee Project” — including Damian McGinty, Samuel Larsen and Lindsay Pearce — admitted that the reality show was pretty emotionally damaging at times, saying that the producers “manipulated” the young contestants into storylines they wanted to see on screen.
“It was abuse, whether they thought it was or wasn’t,” Pearce, who had a brief arc as Harmony “the Gerber baby” on the show, said. “They made a successful reality television show, but the cost was high for some of us.”
Pearce recalled two specific moments on the show, in which she was involved directly.

Following two wonderful seasons of sublime singing and dancing, “The Glee Project” has just been cancelled by the Oxygen Network.
A statement from the production company explained, "The Glee Project will not be returning to Oxygen but we are extremely proud of this series which launched the careers of several talented individuals.”
“The show had so much heart and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling.”
Despite launching the careers of Alex Newell, Blake Jenner, Samuel Larsen, and Damian McGinty, Oxygen cited declining ratings as their reason for pulling the plug. Additionally, the recent tragic death of Cory Monteith had nothing to do with the call.

Though "Glee" is already set for another two seasons (at least), Oxygen has officially canceled "The Glee Project." The reality series that launched the careers of recurring/series regulars Blake Jenner, Alex Newell, Samuel Larsen, and Damian McGinty will not be returning for a third season.

Kristin Chenoweth, Mark Salling and more of Cory’s fellow gleeks took to Twitter shortly after his death.
The entire world was stunned when news broke June 13 that Cory Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room — but few were as devastated, or more vocal, than the people who worked with Cory, 31, on his hit Fox series.
‘Glee’ Cast Reacts To Cory’s Death
Mark Salling, who plays the on-screen Bff to Cory’s Finn, tweeted the most knee-jerk response to Cory’s passing — a simple, and heartbreaking, “no” — but he deleted his tweet shortly after.
One of the most intense responses, due largely to her use of capital letters, came from Dot Marie Jones, who plays Coach Shannon Beiste:
I Have No Words! My Heart Is Broken Cory Was Not Only A Hell Of A Friend He Was One Amazing Men That I Will Hold Close To My Heart Forever.

"Glee" star Cory Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room Saturday (July 13) at the age of 31. While police and the coroner's office investigate Monteith's death, many of his castmates, "Glee" crew and celebrity friends share their emotional reactions via Twitter.
Here are some of the many Twitter responses as of Saturday morning. So far, there is no word from Monteith's longtime girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele, who publicly stood by her man during his final rehab stint.
Taylor Swift: "Speechless. And for the worst reason."
Mark Salling: "no"
"Glee" (official Twitter): "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Is cable network Oxygen ready to cancel its reality show, "The Glee Project," after two seasons? While reports indicate that the "Glee" spin-off will not return for Season 3, its network says otherwise.
As first reported by TVLine, sources at Oxygen indicate that there were several factors involved in making the decision not to renew the show. Low ratings and the fact that "Glee" itself has not yet been renewed for a fifth season on Fox are believed to be the main reasons.
A statement from an Oxygen spokesperson, however, indicated that "The Glee Project" -- while not officially safe for another season -- still has a shot: "What TV Line reported was speculation. 'The Glee Project' has not been canceled."

Aspiring Glee stars, you might have to start trying to get on the hit Fox show the old-fashioned way. Plus, Blaine makes a decision that'll reunite him and Kurt for years to come! The Dec. 13 episode of Glee started with an alternate reality, one where Artie (Kevin McHale) never ended up in a wheelchair. Aside from a minute number of moments, I'd like to pretend this episode never existed. Can we make that happen? Where's Rory Flanagan (Damian McGinty) when you need him? Artie journeyed through a world where Blaine (Darren Criss) never existed, Quinn (Dianna Agron) died and Finchel never happened! It was Rory who acted as Artie's guardian angle (?) through this faux reality, but in an all too quick flash, it was over with. For a theme that was super-hyped in the previews, you'd think they would put more than eight minutes into the "what if" plot direction. Enough with my ranting! I'll highlight the moments that did leave me entertained. Sam & Brittany Take Their Love To...

“Does this involve the glee club singing a Christmas song in the auditorium with snow falling on an elaborate winter scene?” hissed Sue Sylvester, sworn enemy of New Directions, in Glee‘s final episode of 2012.
The answer, of course, was a resounding yes — both in terms of the final scene in Sue’s story arc, and the overarching theme of the episode entitled “Glee, Actually.”
If you were too busy attending the first (and last) meeting of McKinley High’s Mayan Apocalypse Club, here’s what you missed on Glee.

"Glee" is going all-out with its Christmas episode this year. Not only is the show paying homage to the holiday classic, "Love, Actually," but "Glee, Actually" will also feature the return of some very familiar guest stars.
While we do not yet know which "Love, Actually" stories might be recreated in the "Glee" episode, we do know that there will be multiple storylines that somehow come together by the end of the hour. A few of those stories include:
Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Brittany (Heather Morris) think the world is going to end with the Mayan apocalypse and therefore try to live their lives to the fullest.Jake (Jacob Artist) and Puck (Mark Salling) reunite for a brotherly Hanukkah.Artie (Kevin McHale) has a holiday-themed dream (of the Ebenezer Scrooge variety, perhaps?).Kurt (Chris Colfer) has a Christmas he will never forget. (Spoiler Alert: It may be because Blaine (Darren Criss) is going to visit!

I'm going to go ahead and say this, even though I know half of the TV Fanatics who read it will probably disagree with me:
I haven't enjoyed an episode of Glee like I enjoyed tonight's episode in a long, long time.
Maybe my elation is turkey and stuffing induced. Maybe my happiness is from the sweet potatoes. Somehow, however, I doubt it. "Dynamic Duets" solidifies, for me at least, what I saw two weeks ago, and that is that the focus of this show needs to be on McKinley.
I won't lie. I spent the first three minutes tonight wearing my "Wtf" face. The real-life Superhero Squad, complete with Coach Beiste as faculty adviser, was more than a little bizarre. It was downright delusional and unnecessary. And yet... as the episode progressed, I found myself overlooking the fact that the characters were actually, really wearing capes and tights and...

After 11 weeks of awkward homework assignments, ridiculous music videos, and confusing eliminations, we’ve come to the finale, and the theme is, in true Glee Project fashion, yet another made-up word. Coming into the final episode, I thought Aylin was going to win because of her backstory, and that Ali was probably the most deserving, but I kind of wanted Blake to win because, well, he’s Blake. Let’s see how it all turned out.
Homework Assignment: “You Can’t Stop The Beat” from Hairspray
For the very last homework assignment, all the eliminated contestants came back (except for, you know, that one girl who quit) to serve as the trio’s backup singers. It was nice to see everyone reunited. Charlie, of course, ran straight for Aylin, and Michael and Blake shared a bro hug. Ryan Murphy certainly had three very different, talented performers in the final episode of "The Glee Project" Season 2. But he promised to pick just one winner this year for a seven-episode arc on "Glee." Was it musical theater champ Ali Stoker, who has a built-in backstory with that wheelchair, sexy Aylin Bayramoglu, whose Muslim background would be a brand-new story on "Glee," or guy next door Blake Jenner?
Although all three were solid their final performances, Blake won the competition. But let's back up and talk about how he got there:
Photos: "The Glee Project" Season 2 contestants
The homework assignment seemed well-suited to Ali's musical theater sensibilities, but mentor Chris Colfer pulled a Ryan Murphy and chose all three as winners for a special mentoring session. During the recording session, though, it seemed like Blake pulled ahead. Aylin struggled at first, but she ended up doing well in the studio.

The three remaining contenders on The Glee Project--Aylin, Ali, and Blake--have a tough week ahead of them! And at the end of it, one of them will earn a seven-episode guest-starring role on Glee Season 4.
Let's find out who the winner is now...
This week's theme is "Glee-ality." Essentially, which of these three is the most Glee-like. Robert gives them their Homework Assignment--"You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray--and then tells them he's arranged for some special back-up singers to come in and help them. Those special back-up singers? All of their Season 2 castmates!
Aylin's reunited with Charlie and she's really not concerned about anyone else being back. Blake and Ali share the love with everyone and then Ali takes charge on the choreography because Aylin and Blake don't seem to know what to do.

Those special back-up singers? All of their Season 2 castmates!
Aylin's reunited with Charlie and she's really not concerned about anyone else being back. Blake and Ali share the love with everyone and then Ali takes charge on the choreography because Aylin and Blake don't seem to know what to do.
Chris Colfer is the guest mentor this week and Robert tells...

Say what you want about The Glee Project, but it’s one of the few reality series on television that doesn’t add an extra hour or two of padding to its season finale. So tonight, instead of a bloated two- or three-hour endurance test to get us to an announcement that took all of 10 seconds, we got an action-packed hour that shone a spotlight on the respective strengths and weaknesses of the Season 2 Top 3: Aylin, Ali, and Blake.
What we didn’t get, alas, was relief from the “boys rule” doctrine that’s dominated music-centric reality competition series for half a decade now.

"The Glee Project" wraps up Season 2 on Tuesday, Aug. 14 when finalists Ali Stoker, Blake Jenner and Aylin Bayramoglu battle it out for a role on "Glee". But which of the three triple-threats deserves a seven-episode arc on "Glee"? And which one has the best shot at being chosen by executive producer Ryan Murphy? Let's handicap the final three:
Ali
The 24-year-old has a great personality and is always willing to do another take and improve her performance. She is extremely determined and has an interesting storyline, perhaps similar to Artie's (Kevin McHale). Ali has won two homework assignments and has been praised by both Robert Ulrich and Zach Woodlee for her determination. That being said, her voice is more geared toward musical theater. Aside from Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer), most of the singers lean more towards pop music. Show writer Ian Brennan saw Ali's character as a "promiscuous bitch,...

Glee Project watchers who raged against the special twist of Season 1′s finale — not one, but two winners scored seven-episode arcs, and a pair of runners-up snagged two-episode gigs — can stop planning a campaign of strongly worded Tweets to @MrRPMurphy. That’s because the penultimate episode of Season 2 found the show’s executive producer and his fellow judges swinging the axe, then swinging it again, thereby trimming the field from five down to three final contenders.

Memo to all future Glee Project contestants: When you’re in the Bottom 3 and fighting for your life in the competition, never ever answer a question from Ryan Murphy — be it about your childhood traumas or your feelings on hairless cats or your favorite brand of toilet paper — with a shoulder shrug and a mumbly “I dunno.”
After all, The Glee Project (somewhat inexplicably) doesn’t bother with straightforward acting challenges, so in a sense, your face-to-face interviews are an important opportunity to get into character (you’re playing your heightened self, obviously) and emote, emote, emote! Bonus points if...

Glee's fourth season was teased at Comic-Con as executive producers Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan and Dante Di Loreto were joined by stars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, Darren Criss, Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz to take questions from fans. Falchuk spoke during a Glee pre panel press junke. "High school is all about firsts and we want them to have new firsts now: your first love out of high school, your first big breakup, your big breakup and reconciliation, there's a lot to it." Of note, Glee Project Season 1 co-winner Damian McGinty is not returning, Falchuk told reporters. "Damian is not back this year." Kurt is still in Ohio and will help Will (Matthew Morrison) cast...

We'll start with the bad news first: Damian McGinty, the first of last year's "The Glee Project" winners to appear on "Glee," will not be returning for Season 4. The door's never completely closed for anyone to come back, co-creator Brad Falchuk tells Zap2it before the show's Comic-Con panel, but as of right now, McGinty is out.
With all of the seniors graduating on to bigger and better things, "we're definitely going to repopulate the choir room," Falchuk says. In addition to the "Glee Project" Season 2 winner, whom co-creator Ian Brennan says is "a real find and a big talent," they're also considering some of last year's "Tgp" contestants.
"We're talking about some of the 'Glee Project' kids from last year. We love Alex [Newell] and we love Samuel [Larsen], but there are no guarantees about that. We're casting some new people to bring in there because the idea is obviously always...

Ryan Murphy has already promised that every single "Glee" cast member who wants to return for Season 4 will have the opportunity to come back. Exciting! Now, some even better news -- Chord Overstreet, who left "Glee" after not being brought on full time in Season 3 only to return a half season later, will likely be promoted to series regular for Season 4.
It's about time! Sam has proved an integral character to the show, and an important figure for the New Directions. Besides -- with Finn graduating, there's plenty of room for a Qb/leader-type in the choir room.
"I've never heard my grade mentioned, so who knows," Overstreet told Zap2it in January of the possibility of returning in Season 4.
Aside from Overstreet, Deadline reports that all 15 series regulars -- Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz,...

Still, the Bottom 3 contestants on this week’s Glee Project put on such a display of waterworks during their last-chance performances, I was a little worried Glee‘s executive producer Ryan Murphy and his team of mentors might be swept out to sea, never to resolve the burning question of what the heck Kurt Hummel’s gonna do with his life now that he’s not getting into Nyada.

The second season of "The Glee Project" kicked off Tuesday night, and country crooner Maxfield had the unfortunate honor of being the first "Glee" hopeful to be eliminated.
The 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Nashville just didn't have enough personality for "Glee" showrunner Ryan Murphy. However, Maxfield says he is still grateful for his "Glee Project" experience -- and at least he got to meet Lea Michele before getting the boot.
HuffPost TV chatted with Maxfield, via phone, about his short-but-sweet "Glee Project" experience, meeting Michele, not knowing Lady Gaga and singing in front of Murphy, who Maxfield says is kind of like "an onion."
It's never easy being the first one to go, but at least you got the added bonus of meeting Lea Michele, right?
She's definitely not the hardest person to look at!
Were you shocked that Lea was the first guest mentor of the season?

In the words of Ryan Murphy, Season 2 of The Glee Project isn’t so much a talent contest as it is an “inspiration contest.” But let’s be honest: The grand prize isn’t going to go to some Sugar Motta type with a really touching backstory.
After all, if there’s really only going to be one winner of a seven-episode arc on Season 4 of the Glee mothership, I kinda sorta want that person to be the best all-around singer/dancer/actor among the 14 hopefuls looking to follow in the footsteps of Samuel Larsen and Damian McGinty (who went...

Ready or not, "The Glee Project" is back. Fourteen new contestants are vying for the same old prize -- a recurring role on "Glee." But now that we've seen a full season of the post-"Glee Project" "Glee" there are new questions to consider: Is this a prize worth competing for? And is it a prize that benefits "Glee"? Last year's inaugural "Glee Project" gave us not just one but four separate winners. Baby-faced Irish lad Damian McGinty and dreadlocked devout Christian Samuel Larsen were the official champs, and each was guaranteed a "seven episode arc." The runner-ups -- flamboyant drama queen...

As Ryan Murphy has previously stated, most of the "Glee" cast will appear as mentors during Season 2 of "The Glee Project," the Oxygen reality competition that rewards young triple-threats with multi-episode arcs on the hit Fox series. Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera have now joined Lea Michele in advising the contestants throughout Season 2.
Lea Michele will appear in the season 2 premiere focused on "Individuality," while Monteith joins the hopefuls for the June 19 installment about "Vulnerability" and bullying. Rivera stops by during the fourth episode on June 26 to talk about "Sexuality."
Episode 2 will see Samuel Larsen, one of Season 1's co-winners, teaching the current contestants about "Dance-ability." Larsen and Damian McGinty both won seven-episode arcs on "Glee," but have exceeded their initial episode count with no end in sight. In addition, runners-up Alex Newell and Lindsay Pearce appeared on multiple episodes as competition for our favorite New Directions members.
