David Wnendt, the German director behind controversial coming-of-age movie “Wetlands,” Hitler satire “Look Who’s Back” and teen crime drama “Sun and Concrete,” is once again pushing boundaries with his next feature film project.
Backed by distributor-producer Constantin Film and with Seven Elephants lead producing, Wnendt has embarked on the feature film adaptation of the award-winning novel “Athos 2643” by Nils Westerboer.
Wnendt, who will both write the screenplay and direct the theatrical film, promises an “emotional and spectacular experience that will take the audience into the vastness of outer space,” according to a press statement.

Christian Petzold’s anticipated Miroirs No.3 and Kaouther Ben Hania’s epic love story Mimesi are among the 19 projects awarded a total funding of almost €3.5m by Germany’s Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (Mbb) at the second funding session of 2024.
Miroirs No.3 will star Paula Beer in her fourth collaboration with Petzold after Transit, Undine and Afire. She will play a young music student who has to restructure her life when her boyfriend dies in a car crash in the countryside.
The film, which is being produced by Petzold’s production company Schramm Film Koerner Weber Kaiser, received €500,000 in production funding from Mbb.

Mandy Patinkin and Lena Dunham have joined German filmmaker Julia von Heinz’s next film, “Iron Box,” about a New York businesswoman who decides to take her aging father back to his native Poland, where she hopes to explore her Jewish roots.
In an interview with Variety during last year’s Venice Film Festival following the premiere of her latest pic, “And Tomorrow the Entire World,” von Heinz said she planned to send Patinkin and Dunham the script and expressed hope that they would do the film, an adaption of Australian writer Lily Brett’s bestselling novel “Too Many Men.”

The 70th Berlin International Film Festival has unveiled its juries.
Joining president Jeremy Irons on the international jury is actress Bérénice Bejo (Argentina / France), producer Bettina Brokemper (Germany), director Annemarie Jacir (Palestine), plawright and director Kenneth Lonergan (USA), actor Luca Marinelli (Italy) and film critic and director Kleber Mendonça Filho (Brazil).
They will award prizes including the Golden and the Silver Bears to the 18 films in this year’s Competition line up.
Berlin dropped one of its awards, the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer prize, which goes to a film that “opens new perspectives on cinematic art”, after Nazi collaborator accusations emerged against its namesake in German press this week. No word yet on whether the prize will be reintroduced with a new moniker.
The festival’s new competitive section Encounters will see Dominga Sotomayor (Chile), Eva Trobisch (Germany) and Shôzô Ichiyama (Japan) award three prizes: Best Film, Best Director and a Special Jury Award.

Weltkino boards Berlinale premiere.
As this year’s European Film Market in Berlin gets underway, Weltkino has moved quickly to snap up Generation Kplus opening film Cleo – If I Could Turn Back Time for German-speaking territories.
The distributor struck the deal with Munich-based sales outfit Global Screen, which recently boarded the title to represent world rights.
Directed by Erik Schmitt, the film is a road-trip through Berlin which tells the story of young dreamer Cleo as she searches for a magic clock that can turn back time. Marleen Lohse stars in the lead role, Max Mauff and Andrea Sawatzki round out the cast.

Announced at the recent annual Berlinale film festival was the launch of a new fantastic competition from coffee makers Nespresso. The luxury coffee brand who for the first time this year became official supporters of the event in Berlin, released details of a short film competition starting on 7th March in the run up this year’s prestigious and world renowned Cannes Film Festival – a festival which will this year see Nespresso named as official partner for the 9th consecutive year. It will also mark the 6th anniversary of their much coveted ‘Grand Prix Nespresso‘ award, which is given to the winner of La Semaine de la Critique; a week to showcase and give a springboard to young debut film makers.

European Film Promotion (Efp) has launched a new initiative, Producers Lab Hamburg (Plh), bringing producers from across Europe to meet with their Hamburg-based opposite numbers.
The event’s two-day programme (Oct 1-2) during this year’s Filmfest Hamburg will include seminars, pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings and a Hamburg location tour.
The ten European producers coming to Hamburg are drawn from the pool of Efp’s former Producers on the Move, including the UK’s Isabelle Stead (Human Films), Luxembourg’s Donata Rotunno (Tarantula), Norway’s Silje Hopland Eik (Cinenord Kidstory) and Spain’s Antonio Saura (Zampa Audiovisual).
Stead will be coming to Hamburg after having taken part in the fifth edition of the Producers Lab Toronto, while Rotunno is now developing Yilmaz Arslan’s new project Raqs after producing his last film Fratricide and is also looking for German partners for his own third feature film Sara Sarà.

The Gold Hugo for Best Film went to “My Sweet Pepper Land,” from Iraq, France and Germany.

Andrew Mudge’s African set drama The Forgotten Kingdom took the Golden Punt Best Fiction Audience Award at the Cambridge Film Festival, which closed last night (September 29).
Clemente Bicocchi’s Black Africa, Whilte Marble picked up the Audience Award for Best Documentary, whilst Erik Schmitt & Stephan Müller’s Rhino Full Throttle was named Best Short Film by audiences.
The 33rd Cambridge Film Festival came to a close last night with a special preview screening of Kevin MacDonald’s How I Live Now, attended by the Oscar-winning director.
All 55 of the films receiving their UK premiere at the festival were eligible for the awards, which were voted for by the festival audiences.
The Young Critics Award winner was named as Abi Loosemore. The award was chosen from a panel of 18 critics aged 16-19, who each submitted a minimum of 3 reviews of 250 words...
