There are (at time of press) more than 60 feature-length filmed adaptations of Stephen King's works intended for cinematic release. That's without counting television adaptations, works currently in production, or short films. Perhaps the kindest thing I can say about The Boogeyman is that it's one of them.
The short films include two previous versions of this story with the same title. One from 2014 by Bobby Easley, a genre director/actor himself. His later adaptations include Hp Lovecraft's Witch House where he played (the voice of?) a Doctor's Office. Another from 2010 by Gerard Lough, part of a career perhaps more notable for music videos. A similarly titled film by Stephen Kay drops the definite article and claims no direct inspiration. Perhaps as well, as while he's helmed a lot of episodes for prestige TV the reward for his late Nineties Beat-generation film The Last Time I Committed...

If you are looking for something a little different and are happy to entertain the smaller-budget independent films on offer, then I may have something a little different for you in the shape of Irish globetrotting lo-fi noir thriller Spears.
Director Gerard Lough brings us a tale of betrayal and treachery starting from the Irish shores and spanning all the way to Florence. A tightly woven story told through three separate, seemingly unconnected, characters. A movie that at times shows flourishes of undeniable quality where every penny of this shoestring budget is on screen. Although sometimes forgetting there is untapped unfiltered beauty in the gritty washed-out moments of rural real life… But we will get to that bit.
Kian is a private investigator who makes questionable life choices but seemingly has a good heart.

Just as sure as the morning will bring the sun, so too will 2023 see the release of another Stephen King adaptation, this time in the form of "The Boogeyman." Perhaps not quite as well known as some of his other work, "The Boogeyman" originated as a short story written by the notorious vending machine hater in 1973 for Cavalier magazine, before later being featured in King's 1978 short story collection "Night Shift" along with works like "The Lawnmower Man" and "Children of the Corn." It's since been twice adapted into a short film, first by Jeff C. Schiro in 1982 and then by Gerard Lough in 2010.
The first-ever feature-length take on "The Boogeyman" began with a script draft written by "A Quiet Place" scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, with Akela Cooper of "Malignant" and "M3GAN" fame having also worked up a draft or two prior to Mark Heyman boarding the project as a writer.

Spears is an Irish thriller and the second feature film from director Gerard Lough – the man behind 2015’s critically acclaimed horror Night People. Aidan O’Sullivan, Bobby Calloway and Nigel Brennan head up an international cast that also includes Michael Parle, Yalda Shahidi, Rebecca Rose Flynn and Thomas Sharkey.
The complex plot begins when Private Investigator Kian (Brennan) is sent to Florence, Italy to find a woman (Shahidi) who mysteriously disappeared there. Rogue Frame Films has released the first trailer for Spears, an Irish thriller from Irish filmmaker Gerard Lough. Shot in four different countries, this ambitious indie project has a much larger scope than his first feature, 2015's critically acclaimed horror Night People. With its moody atmosphere and pervading sense of paranoia, the film is "very much be rooted in the Neo-Noir style and explore topical themes both political and technological." A Private Investigator is sent to Florence, Italy to find a woman who vanished there. He soon finds himself tangled in a web of obsession and revenge. Night People is an Irish anthology horror – comprising of three tales – from writer and director Gerard Lough. Clearly made on a low budget, that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm and vision that Lough has pumped into the film.
Starting in a manner reminiscent of recent anthology horror V/H/S, two shifty types break into a house with a plan to burn it to the ground. While they wait for their window of opportunity, they entertain themselves by telling creepy stories. Each takes a turn, which forms the first and second stories of the anthology, and the wrap up with our two protagonists forms the third tale.
The first story revolves around a strange artefact, and the double crossing and doubt that can...

Two thieves tell each other eerie stories to pass the time in Gerard Lough’s Night People, a new anthology film hitting VOD on May 9th. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Lough to discuss the making of his directorial feature film debut.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Gerard. When and how did you first come up with the idea for your new film, Night People?
Gerard Lough: Anthology films were very much a fixture of my childhood at Halloween, as they always seemed to be shown on TV at the time and I always liked the idea of getting three stories for the price of one, each of them with the fat trimmed off, that would hit the ground running. Anthology shows were also very much on the go at that time but seemed to die out, so...

To celebrate their 13th anniversary this year, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival is going green!
No, they’re not out to save the kookaburra or anything. Instead, they’re hosting a special tribute to the New Irish Low Budget Cinema, featuring two films by acclaimed filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh, plus work by Colin Downey, Gary Kenneally and Gerard Lough.
Muff will host a repeat screening of Kavanagh’s celebrated thriller Tin Can Man — it previously screened at Muff in 2008 — as well as his latest film, The Fading Light. The three other Irish films screening all fall into the horror/thriller genres, from Downey’s The Looking Glass to Kenneally’s Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and Lough’s trilogy-ending The Shaken 3. And, in addition, the entire fest kicks off with the opening night Irish thriller Charlie Casanova by Terry McMahon.
