Raymond Schwartz
- Actor
Raymond Schwartz was a French banker and author. Schwartz was born in
Metz, France in 1894 and died in Paris in 1973. He spoke French,
German, Greek, Latin and Esperanto. The Raymond Schwartz Prize for
Esperanto literature is named in his honor. Although he identified with
the French, he was drafted into the German Army in World War I and
served in Eastern Europe. After the war, he moved to Paris where he
began his banking career. Although his prolific writings in Esperanto
were sometimes serious, including an autobiographical novel "Like the
Water of the River," which was about life in France and Germany through
two World Wars, much of his work was humorous and included short
stories, poetry and a magazine column. He edited a magazine and managed
or was part owner of three different Esperanto cabarets in Paris. He
wrote and acted in skits.
