A mission to steal a bag full of crystal meth sparks an enjoyable labyrinthine sci-fi adventure for two bickering addicts
Denise (Freya Tingley) and Johnny (Charles Grounds) are drug buddies living in present-day Melbourne. When they’re not getting high, they spend their time mooching about, bickering, and arguing about whether some of the fancier words Johnny uses are real. They are what the cops might uncharitably describe as no-hopers.
In what turns out to be a labyrinthine time-travelling plot, one day, the dirty duo’s regular drug dealer, Kane (Joshua Morton), sends them on a mission to a dilapidated house to steal a bag full of crystal meth, a chore that will clear their debt to him. Kane warns them not to try the supply, but of course garrulous Johnny does and within seconds he evaporates with a snap and whoosh of wind right before Denise’s face. In an edit,...

Featuristic Films has unveiled an exclusive first look at the feature documentary “Afghanistan.” It follows filmmaker James Glancy, a former British Royal Marine Commando who was decorated in 2012 for his actions in combat, as he returns to Afghanistan with a small, handpicked team to help him answer the question that has haunted him over the past decade: Was it worth it?
Dramatically, mid-way through the shoot, President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. would be pulling troops out by 9/11, starting a Taliban offensive that has led to the dramatic fall this week of the Afghan government, amidst chaotic evacuation scenes in Kabul as American forces withdraw.
The documentary offers unprecedented access to the story of the Afghan war and what has happened to the Afghan people, Featuristic Films said, told firstly through the personal journey of Glancy, his memories from fighting in Afghanistan, stories from his father, who lived...

What is the point to Bad Detectives (previously “Year of the Detectives”)?
It is billed as the story of two young women, Nic O'Connell (Freya Tingley) and Ping Liu (Dralla Aierken), who must team up to “try and solve the mystery of their detective grandfathers' murders”. I had hopes, briefly, of some comedy. After all, the one thing that we know from the very beginning is that after some unspecified childhood falling out, Nic and Liu are the worst of enemies, ready to shout loudly and unreasonably at each other at the drop of a hat. Or funerary urn.
At any rate, they don’t seem to have a clue about actual detecting. Could this be an update of the Thomson and Thompson pairing (pace Tintin from years gone by)?
Short answer: no. The two are thrown together after their respective grandfathers, who ran a detective agency together, appear to have fallen off.

Restoration wit William Congreve opined that music had charms to soothe the savage breast, but in “The Sonata,” it has power to summon the savage beast — you know, the one usually depicted with horns, tail, and a pitchfork. This handsome horror meller set primarily in France benefits considerably from location shooting in cheaper, but picturesque Latvia. It’s Looks 10, Personality 4, however, as director Andrew Desmond and collaborator Arthur Morin’s screenplay doesn’t quite provide enough incident to properly milk its own premise, making for a supernatural thriller that ends just as it’s beginning to work up a sweat.

An intriguing blend of macabre music and gothic atmosphere, The Sonata was one of my favorite films from this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival. Ahead of its January 10th release from Screen Media, we've been provided with an exclusive clip to share with Daily Dead readers.
You can watch a music expert bring a sinister score to life in our exclusive clip below, and keep an eye out for The Sonata when Screen Media releases it in theaters and on VOD beginning January 10th.
Directed by Andrew Desmond, The Sonata stars Freya Tingley, Rutger Hauer, Simon Abkarian, and James Faulkner:
Synopsis: "After being informed of the sudden death of her long lost composer father (Rutger Hauer), a young virtuoso violinist Rose (Freya Tingley) inherits an old mansion in which he used to live. There, she discovers her father’s final work: a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols.

The Sonata is a mysterious thriller, from director Andrew Desmond (Galaxy of Horrors). The film blends the occult with music as one woman inherits a massive estate. Inside the mansion, Rose discovers an incomplete composition, which could summon the Anti-Christ. In one of Rutger Hauer's final roles, The Sonata also stars: Freya Tingley (No Way to Live) as the protagonist, along with: Simon Abkarian and James Faulkner. Filmed in Latvia, the film's first trailer is available here, ahead of an impending U.S. theatrical release. Desmond has spoken a bit about this film. At Eye for Film, the director mentions the Gothic influences: "Gothic horror is one of the most visual genres around...it was important for me to create a dark, elegant and moody atmosphere to bathe the story and its characters in." Some of that Gothic horror can be seen in the setting, the Cesvaine Palace. Desmond...

The early months of the year have turned into a bit of a dumping ground for movies that are best forgotten but once in a while one comes along that surpasses expectation. Though I don't expect that The Sonata will be breaking any records, I do hope that it at least does right by Rutger Hauer.
Freya Tingley stars as Rose Fisher, a talented violinist whose estranged father, a talented composer named Richard Marlowe, Hauer in one of his final roles, dies suddenly, leaving her everything. Among his belongings is a sonata that contains symbols Rose has never seen before. Horror is afoot!

An intriguing movie that practically oozes gothic horror from its pores, The Sonata was one of my favorite films from this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival, and I'm excited that Daily Dead readers won't have to wait long to see it for themselves, as Screen Media has announced a January release date and unveiled an official trailer and poster for the film.

"If the notes are played with exactly the right pitch, they could conjure and seduce the antichrist." Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for indie horror-thriller The Sonata, which premiered at numerous genre film festivals last year - including Fantasporto, Fantafestival, and FrightFest. The film stars Australian actress Freya Tingley as a young virtuoso violinist who inherits her long lost composer father's old mansion. When she arrives to there, she discovers a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols, triggering dark forces that reach beyond her imagination. This is a pretty cool concept: a horror movie in which playing music unleashes dark forces. The cast includes (the late) Rutger Hauer, plus Simon Abkarian, and James Faulkner. This definitely looks creepy and cool - I'm curious. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Andrew Desmond's The Sonata, from Screen Media's YouTube: After being informed of the death of her...

Don't shrink back from this modern gothic horror flick simply because it features ... a violin! Actually, I don't know anyone who would resist The Sonata, a lovely, haunting composition of a film, simply because it features stringed instruments. Freya Tingley stars as a rising concert violinist whose life takes a tumble after she learns that her father has died. It's dark, stirring, and features the great Rutger Hauer, whose shadow in the story hangs over everything. My review from the Popcorn Frights Film Festival earlier this year goes into more details (without spoiling anything), but if you'd just like the official synopsis, here it is: "After being informed of the sudden death of her long lost composer father (Rutger Hauer), a young virtuoso violinist...

Screen Media has picked up all North American rights to “The Sonata,” a thriller that features one of the late actor Rutger Hauer’s final film roles.
“The Sonata” centers on young violinist Rose (Freya Tingley) who inherits an old mansion after the death of her composer father (Hauer). Screening at this year's Frightfest, Andrew Desmond's handsome occult thriller The Sonata made quite an impression. It's the story of young violinist Rose (played by Freya Tingley) who learns that her estranged father, a famous composer who spent his later years in obscurity, has passed away, leaving her his mansion in France. Visiting with the intention of selling the property, she discovers that that's not all he's left her - there's a piece of music there, apparently waiting for her, which just might be a work of genius. To decipher it, however, she has to follow a series of clues which gradually lead her - and her manager Charles - into very dark places. It's a remarkably polished feature début and I asked Andrew what led him to take on something so ambitious in the first place.

Andrew Desmond is a director we've been keeping a close eye on in these pages for some time now. His short film work has been striking and we were pleased to share the first images from his debut feature, The Sonata, almost exactly a year ago. And now the film has wrapped up and we're very excited to share the first teaser. A young violinist unravels her long lost father’s past, triggering dark forces that reach beyond her imagination… Freya Tingley, Simon Akbarian, James Faulkner and Rutger Hauer star in the classically styled - and classical music oriented - horror picture. Take a look at the first teaser below!...

Here’s some good-looking first footage I can reveal of mystery-horror The Sonata, starring Freya Tingley (Hemlock Grove), Simon Akbarian (Casino Royale), James Faulkner (Atomic Blonde) and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner).
The completed film, which is set in London and France, follows young virtuoso violinist Rose (Tingley). After the death of her estranged but famous composer father (Hauer), she inherits the old mansion in which he lived. There, she discovers her father’s final work: a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols. With the help of Charles (Abkarian), her agent and manager, she deciphers the symbols and, little by little, starts to unlock secrets concerning her father’s past, setting in motion the mechanisms of a plan imagined on the day she was born.

Germany’s leading sales companies have descended on the American Film Market with a wide range of titles that span horror and historical fare to arthouse, animation and family pics.
Supernatural thrillers look to be especially prevalent this year, with such chilling titles as “The Sonata,” “Hanna’s Homecoming” and “Party Hard, Die Young” — all from Arri Media Intl.
Directed by Andrew Desmond and starring Freya Tingley, Simon Abkarian and Rutger Hauer, “The Sonata” follows a young violinist who inadvertently triggers dark forces after discovering a mysterious music score composed by her late father. The film world premiered at Afm.
Esther Bialas’ “Hanna’s Homecoming,” likewise having its market premiere, centers on a teen girl who is shunned in her village because her mother was widely believed to be a witch and responsible for the deaths of several men. The pic premiered in October at the Hof Film Festival.

Freya Tingley in ‘The Sonata.’
Freya Tingley will play the lead in first-time Us director Ali Presley Paras’ mystery-thriller Year of the Detectives, which starts shooting in Los Angeles this month.
The Aussie actor describes her character Nic O’Connell, a recently discharged Army veteran, as “like a grenade with the pin pulled: she’s tomboyish, tough and not afraid of a fight.”
O’Connell jointly inherits her grandfather’s private detective agency in the heart of Chinatown. She must set aside her differences with her co-inheritor (True Grit’s Paul Rae) to solve the mystery of her grandparents’ deaths as bodies pile up.
Chris Johnson wrote the script and the producer is Silversmith Pictures’ Joe Smith. A longtime assistant cameraman, Paras has directed several shorts including Quad, which is available on Hulu as part of the Fun Size Horror anthology.

"I'm terrified what else you could convince yourself of..." Lionsgate has debuted the trailer for a murder mystery thriller titled Spinning Man, adapted from a book by George Harrar. This philosophical thriller is about a family man and esteemed professor at a college, who gets entangled in the investigation of a missing woman. His "off-campus dalliances" with many of his students make him the main suspect, though we don't know who really took her. Guy Pearce plays the professor, and Pierce Brosnan plays the detective on the case, intent on pegging him as the murderer. The cast includes Minnie Driver, Odeya Rush, Alexandra Shipp, Clark Gregg, Jamie Kennedy, Sterling Beaumon, and Freya Tingley. Despite this strong cast, I actually think this looks pretty bad, a fairly derivative thriller with nothing interesting or new to offer. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Simon Kaijser's Spinning Man, direct from YouTube...

Director: Clint Eastwood; Screenwriter Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice; Starring: John Lloyd Young, Vincent Piazza, Johnny Cannizzaro, Michael Lomenda; Running time: 134 mins; Certificate: 15
If one were compiling a list of natural choices to direct the long-awaited big screen adaptation of Jersey Boys, Clint Eastwood probably wouldn't be anywhere near the running. His approach to drama has always wavered somewhere between earnest and po-faced, with his last few efforts (J Edgar, Hereafter, Invictus) leaning distinctly towards the latter, while this jukebox musical won hearts on Broadway and the West End thanks chiefly to its catchy tunes and snappy, fleet-footed pace.
There's not much rhythm or vim to Eastwood's enjoyable but slavish chronicle of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' origins, which translates Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice's book more or less word-for-word but inevitably lacks the immediacy of live theatre. What it does have is the musical chops, thanks to...

Okay I admit it, I'm a showtunes queen! I love Broadway and musicals, good musicals, that is. And I think "Jersey Boys" is a good musical. The rugs-to-riches tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is captivating and the soundtrack rocks!
And now comes the inevitable movie version, and to be honest? It actually looks good! Director Clint Eastwood added some grittiness to the Broadway gloss and voila -- a musical that will steal our hearts this summer, June 20th to be exact! Oh, plus points for adding Christopher Walken to the mix! Will he sing? Or at least dance?
Take a look at the new "Jersey Boys" trailer and then sing with the soundtrack:

With all the awards attention paid to Netflix’s political drama House of Cards and prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black, it’s extremely easy to forget about the streaming giant’s other noteworthy original series, supernatural thriller Hemlock Grove. That’s more than a little unfair to the Eli Roth-produced series; though it certainly can’t match the dramatic heights of its network competitors, there’s a campy fun inherent in the series’ over-the-top gore and sexuality. Luckily for fans of the show, Netflix has opted to bring it back for another ten episodes, and today, the network revealed the premiere date for Hemlock Grove‘s second season.
