After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Lisa Takeuchi Cullen will be the next president of the WGA East, succeeding Michael Winship, who is not seeking re-election.
Cullen, who is running unopposed in the guild’s upcoming elections, will be its third female president and the first person of color to hold the post, starting next month. She currently serves as VP of the guild’s Film/TV/Streaming sector.
Winship said in a statement today that his decision not to run again “was made right from the start two years ago when I was asked to return to the presidency. Despite having already served five terms as president, from 2007-2017, I agreed to run again in 2021 to help work out issues the guild was facing in terms of constitutional revisions and other membership concerns, but I did say then that it only would be for two years.”

“This is a decision that was made right from the start two years ago when I was asked to return to the presidency,” Winship said in a statement sent to guild members Tuesday, just as Wgae revealed the candidates up for officer seats in its upcoming council election this September. “Despite having already served five terms as president, from 2007-2017, I agreed to run again in 2021 to help work out issues the guild was facing in terms of constitutional revisions and other membership concerns, but I did say then that it only would be for two years.”

Writers Guild of America East President Michael Winship will step down from his post in September despite the union’s ongoing strike against Hollywood studios.
Winship, who previously led the union from 2007-2017, said Tuesday in a letter to union members that his name does not appear on the list of candidates for this year’s upcoming elections because he intends to stick with the pledge he made when he returned in 2021 and only serve two years.
“This is not a choice that was made lightly, but I have been a member of this union for more than four decades and active in our work for nearly all of them,” Winship wrote. “Now the time has come for me to pass responsibility to the new generation of Guild members and the elected council.”

Trevor Noah is taking his talents from late night to early morning with his first-ever “Daily Show” daytime special.
Hosted by Noah, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Presents: Remotely Educational,” will feature correspondents Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Dulcé Sloan and Roy Wood Jr., as well as contributors Jordan Klepper and Lewis Black, teaching the “only remote-learning classes that skip calculus and grammar in favor of lessons that students will actually need in life.” KPop group Nct 127 will also be stopping by to give “a very special extra credit lesson.”
You can watch a preview for the 30-minute special above, in which you’ll get an idea of the curriculum that Noah has planned as the perfect substitute for your kid’s Zoom class, like “Who Hates Who,” “Math for Real Life,” how to survive the Tsa, and what to do about mice.

The pullover hoodie has become Trevor Noah’s signature look. In the weeks, then months, that followed the March relaunch of “The Daily Show” from the host’s New York apartment after the coronavirus shut down studio shooting — making it the first late-night talker to switch to an at-home format — Noah settled on an on-camera setup that emphasizes comfort and intimacy: sitting on his couch, leaning toward the camera of an iPhone, wearing whatever hue of hooded sweatshirt catches his eye on a given morning.
But in the days after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers, Noah’s choices became more deliberate.
“I wore a black hoodie for a while,” Noah says. “Not to build it up, but I just — I didn’t feel like color, you know? Every day, when I walked into the closet, it didn’t feel like a purple day; it didn’t...

Beau Willimon will run unopposed for reelection as president of the WGA East. It’s the second time the House of Cards creator has run unopposed for president – the first time was when he was first elected in 2017. Beau Willimon, the playwright and showrunner who launched Netflix’s “House of Cards,” is running unopposed for re-election to a two-year term as president of the Writers Guild of America East.
Willimon also ran unopposed in 2017 to succeed Michael Winship. The WGA East announced a total of 24 candidates Thursday for its top officer posts and Council seats. Results will be announced Sept. 20.
The announcement comes with the WGA locked in a heated standoff with Hollywood agents over the issues of how agents represent WGA members. The guild required on April 13 that members fire their agents if the agents had not signed a Code of Conduct, which bans agents from taking packaging fees and prohibits agencies from owning production affiliates.
Willimon has been criticized for working last year with Endeavor Content, an affiliate of Wme, on the Hulu drama “The First,” which was canceled after one season. WGA West executive director...
