Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Back in the ’90s, the original X-Men: The Animated Series gained a following precisely because it could translate the tangled soap-opera storylines from the comic franchise into compelling, but easily digestible chunks. X-Men ’97 continues this tradition, but for a very different audience. Where only big nerds knew about Gambit or Deadpool in the ’90s, now they’re household names.
And yet, X-Men ’97 goes even deeper, filling the screen with deep-cut Marvel characters from both the world of mutants and the cosmos. If you want to put some names and backstories to some of these faces, here’s a guide to all the cameos and major character returns in the show’s sixth episode, “Lifedeath Part 2.”

Ridley Scott is all set to take us back to Ancient Rome with his upcoming Gladiator 2. The previous installment was critically and commercially successful with 5 Oscars including Best Picture and Actor. New details from the upcoming project have been recently revealed at the CinemaCon 2024 and surprisingly, the fans are not very convinced about it.
Russell Crowe played Maximus in Gladiator
Gladiator is one of the most significant films in Ridley Scott’s career. The film boasted some iconic performances from Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and others. The sequel is set to present a new cast including Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn. However, the plot details of the sequel suggest that it may be a cash grab rather than an honest continuation.

A lively CinemaCon presentation closed out with spectacular first footage from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II as studio top brass mostly put speculation of mergers and acquisitions behind them to focus on a rich upcoming slate.
Yet there was scarcely a mention of Mission: Impossible 8, the next instalment in the spy action franchise from Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie due out on May 23, 2025. There was no recorded segment of Cruise dangling from the International Space Station announcing the new title, and no sneak peaks.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has found itself in an interesting position after Disney acquired Fox, bringing a slew of characters into the fold of Marvel, ones whose film rights had been traded away to keep the company afloat. This includes the Fantastic Four, the casting for which has been released, and the X-Men, who have been trickling into the MCU piecemeal via various projects.
Marvel’s Fantastic Four announcement
The Fantastic Four have officially been announced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, coming to theatres in July 2025, while Deadpool will bring the mutant host to the MCU in July 2024. However, Marvel plans to release a new superhero IP in 2026, or so the rumor mill says. There are a few names that come to mind, chief among them Captain Britain, who could be played by Henry Cavill.

Gladiators, ready! The legendary sports gameshow that sees members of the public take on super-strong “Gladiators” in a series of physical challenges is getting a revival on the BBC – what a time to be alive. The new Gladiators starts on BBC One on Saturday January 13 at 5.50 p.m., and is presented by father-son due Bradley and Barney Walsh.
Gladiators captivated Saturday nights in the nineties. The whole family huddled around a too-small television to watch Ulrika Jonsson and John Fashanu introduce four “contenders” (members of the public) who were going to take on the mighty Gladiators, in a show packed with shellsuits, tight lycra costumes, and Hairstyles with a capital H. By the time it reached the final round, aka The Eliminator, we’d all be screaming at the screen as contestants faced trapezes, a zipwire and the ultimate challenge: the travelator.
Fan favourites in the original Gladiators lineup included Wolf,...

The germ of the idea for Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, came long before he was one of the most famous directors in Hollywood.
“In college, I had said something to my professor like…what about an ensemble movie like Seven Samurai in space?” Snyder told Den of Geek on the set of the Netflix production back in 2022. The 1954 Akira Kurosawa classic in question is about a small farming village that hires seven samurai to protect them from an army of 40 bandits; Rebel Moon’s story thus likewise centers on the peaceful colony of Veldt and its hero Kora (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman and Star Trek Beyond), a young woman who is tasked with seeking out warriors from other planets to help protect the village from the unstoppable armies of the tyrannical Regent Belisarius (Fra Fee).

Joaquin Phoenix is Napoleon Bonaparte. We admit it’s a bit of a strange idea given the absolute lack of je ne sais quoi energy (or French accent) that comes to mind when you think of the American actor. Nevertheless, in the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon biopic, there is something undeniably intriguing about the performance, not least of which because this is a chance to see Phoenix work with Scott again in a sprawling historical context.
Indeed, the first and last time the pair collaborated was Gladiator, the film that won Scott a Best Picture Oscar and garnered Phoenix a supporting actor nomination. In that film, Phoenix played another tyrant, too, albeit a less ambiguous one (there are no grand monuments to Commodus in Rome like there is for Napoleon in Paris!). Yet the more interesting point of contrast might be how much the film industry has...

Barry Keoghan has dropped out of the 'Gladiator' sequel. The 'Banshees of Inisherin' actor had been due to play Emperor Geta in Sir Ridley Scott's highly-anticipated movie, but he has now stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts, and 'The White Lotus' actor Fred Hechinger is in talks to replace him in the role.Meanwhile, Deadline reports a string of new casting announcement for the film, including May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas, while Sir Derek Jacobi will be one of few returning cast members, reprising his role as Gracchus from the original 2000 blockbuster. While many of the leading roles were offered to the cast, the director carried out an extensive search for the lead role of Lucius - the son of Connie Nielsen's character Lucilla and Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus from the original film - which ultimately went to Paul Mescal,...

“They don’t make the Gladiator/Braveheart-type movies anymore” is the kind of complaint you’ll hear when talking about the state of popular cinema, specifically in regard to the growing disconnect between audiences and Academy voters. True: those rousing Hollywood epics are a sign of a distant past. But Apple Studios, with its seemingly infinite cash flow, has heard these cries. And nearly a decade after Steven McQueen’s harsh yet Oscar-triumphant 12 Years a Slave earned critical laurels as the definitive film on the subject of America’s greatest shame, they’re here to show there’s a new, seemingly gritty but also populist way to approach the matter.
Yet Emancipation is above and beyond a work of streaming-service hubris, in which 100 million-plus is put into turning the story of “Whipped Peter,” the most famous photograph to come out of American slavery, into the new historical epic.

"Just enjoy the sunshine and work on your tan." Peacock has unveiled the full official trailer for the horror comedy slasher They/Them, a reference to the "they/them" pronounces from the LGBTQ community. This film marks the directorial debut of a screenwriter named John Logan, with Jason Blum of Blumhouse producing. They/Them is an empowering slasher film featuring an ensemble cast: Carrie Preston, Anna Chlumsky, Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Anna Lore, Monique Kim, Darwin del Fabro, Cooper Koch, and Austin Crute. Plus, of course, Kevin Bacon as the camp counselor. When a group of LGBTQ+ campers arrives at Whistler Camp, a religious conversion camp, a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, and they must reclaim their power if they're going to survive the horrors of the camp. The very specific pronunciation of the title "they slash them" makes me think it's going to be... they are slashing them ...
