- On January 19, 2010, he became the first Republican elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in over 37 years, defeating Martha Coakley 52%-47% in a special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy.
- His parents divorced when he was a child. His father later remarried three times and his mother remarried four times.
