Now that American Idol is headlong into its "final" season (until the whole thing is rebooted as Idol Redux: America Strikes Back in 2022), I realize what I'll miss most about this white-bread karaoke pageant: the unbelievably awkward montages of Top 24 contestants dancing as Ryan Seacrest reads their names. Last night's Top 24 reveal didn't feature that classic sequence, which has been a mainstay of the series since the first few seasons. And that is a shame. Why? Because Idol is a dork circus and everyone deserves a chance to stand in the center ring and perform the pony for America's vote. In case you're unfamiliar with this gorgeous, ludicrously unflattering dance sequence, here is part of 2009's medley. Please watch in fear as Kris Allen goes full Caucasian with his startling "spank that ass" choreo. It's like he's foreshadowing the against-all-odds charisma that will win him the whole thing. Travel with...

What Thursday night’s American Idol telecast lacked in suspense, it more than made up for in terms of surprise.
Ryan Seacrest pulled a Gwyneth Paltrow and went all Country Strong on us, but not before getting lifted like a set of Jersey Shore dumbbells by male and female contestants alike. Rachel Zevita opened up a commanding lead in the Season 10 Millinery Race. A pissed-off rocker chick took home the prize for Most Endearing Contestant (I kid you not!) by candidly flipping off the Idol cameras. And Sam Cooke’s classic civil-rights anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come” underwent radical...

With news that producers on the British version of "X Factor" used Auto-Tune software to help sweeten the voices of a few contestants, I can't say I'm that surprised. Like "American Idol," Simon Cowell's "X Factor" aims to find the music industry's next big superstar. If the singers on "X Factor" and "Idol" are going to have to compete with contemporary pop acts — many of whom barely do an interview without a little audio sweetening in post-production — can you blame producers for a little tweaking here and there to polish their product?
In fact, I wonder if Cowell's old show might have gained a bit of shine from some tuning enhancements in the past. Here's my pick for five "American Idol" contestants who would have benefited from some minor pitch-correction.

Michelle Delamor's American Idol (TV) journey began when she took the stage in front of millions watching at home and performed Alicia Keys' "Fallin'." The judges seemed to be split, but when she returned the next week with Creed's "With Arms Wide Open," they all seemed to love it. Check out what the judges had to say: Kara DioGuardi: "My favorite performance of yours ever." Randy Jackson: "You just didn't do enough with it." Simon Cowell: "You took our pointers and attempted to make it your own." Ellen DeGeneres: "I think you did do a lot with the song." Sadly for the fashion guru, America sent her packing, but don't think that just because she was kicked off Idol, that means she is leaving L.A.! In a recent press call, fallen Idol Michelle Delamor spoke about her favorite moment on Idol, she defended her Creed song choice,...

American Idol eliminee Michelle Delamor has reportedly insisted that she will go on to achieve "something big". Kara DioGuardi has the hots for Casey James (along with the rest of America), Simon Cowell has picked Crystal Bowersox as his early favorite, Randy Jackson is dawgs with the whole crew, and funny Ellen DeGeneres always keeps it light, like the joke she made to Alex Lambert last week, "There's such a great voice under that mullet." Even though the judges have very strong input every week, it is your job as Americans to vote for your favorite. Four more contestants were sent home last Thursday and throughout the week we will be bringing you sound clips about their American Idol (TV) journey. Things are heating up on American Idol (TV) and last week we said goodbye to another four contestants who sang their hearts out on the Idol stage. The new format for Season 9 has four contestants going home for three consecutive weeks, until the Top 12 are reached.

Former American Idol contestant Jermaine Sellers has revealed that he is planning to send Simon Cowell a new bible.
Sellers was eliminated from the show on Thursday night only two night’s after he offered to take the judge to his church.
“I’m gonna send him a Bible,” he told Access Hollywood. “Like I told him, he [needs] to go to church.
“If he had a little bit of Jesus in him, then he wouldn’t be so mean. I’ve never known [anybody] that don’t smile.”
However, Simon isn’t as mean as Jermaine insinuated. The music mogul even offered his commiserations to the outgoing singer.
“He came to me afterward, after I got voted off, and he said, ‘Jermaine, I’m sorry’,” Sellers explained.

Michelle Delamor has admitted that she questioned her song choice on American Idol. Delamor was voted off the show on Thursday after performing a rendition of Creed's 'With Arms Wide Open'. She explained that she had chosen to take on a rock song because the panel had said that her previous performance of Alicia Keys's 'Fallin' was too safe. "I thought I was taking a risk, and I tried too much to go by what the judges said," the 22-year-old told MTV News. "I wanted to make sure I did the right thing, and I was too caught up in (more)...

Following a rendition of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open," Michelle Delamor was booted off American Idol this week.
It was the one elimination we thought the public got wrong. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the singer talked about her experience on the show. Excerpts are below...
Was she surprised? I thought I was going to go further in the competition and I thought I had a lot more to offer that what I showed on Wednesday night’s performance. I was hoping I’d go further because I knew I had so much more to give. I didn’t feel like I fully ever got to show America or the rest of the world what I had to offer. I thought the journey would go a little longer, but it’s all good.
What other song would she have chosen, given the chance? I would’ve done “Come Together” by The Beatles,...

This week, I did better in my "American Idol" predictions, correctly guessing three out of the four contestants who would be going home - Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Michelle Delamor. It was a toss up for me between Haeley Vaughn and Lacey Brown. I guess I underestimated the power of the Texans. The red-headed country girl got to stay, while 16-year-old Haeley's "Climb" (she sang the Miley Cyrus tune this week) on the show was a short one. This morning, I had a chance to chat with all four eliminated contestants.

John Park and Jermaine Sellers were eliminated from "American Idol" but have nothing but positive feelings about their entire experience on the show.
John Park
On his most memorable moments of the journey:
It's just meeting the other contestants and really becoming god friends. Also working with Rickey Minor and the band. I mean, just working with the top of the top crew and band and coaches, it was just incredible.
On Simon's harsh remark that John would soon rejoin his acapella group:
He was basically saying that I might go home this week. He of course dramatizes it so people at home watch it and get a kick out of it. I don't really mind it because I understand where he's coming from. That's just who he is on TV. After the elimination happened and I sang my last song, he came up to me and shook my...

Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn saw their "American Idol" careers end Thursday, March 4. Find out what they thought of the journey.
Michelle Delamor
On her polished stage presence:
I think it's just because I've been singing on stage since I was about five years old. Mostly at church, though ... just practicing on stage at church. And doing gigs, I do a lot of gigs back home.
On Kara rescinding the comments about her "Arms Wide Open":
It was a little bit disappointing but knowing myself, I'm really a perfectionist and I know that I didn't do my best. I know Wednesday was not close to my best performance. I understood where she was coming from. I was disappointed she had those things to say, but I couldn't' say that she was wrong for it because it wasn't my best performance. The "American Idol" semi-finalists have been whittled down to 16 contestants and so far a few trends appear to be emerging during these first two weeks of eliminations.
Wondering why singers like John Park and Joe Munoz have been booted and singers like Tim Urban and Lacey Brown have stuck around?
Some "Idol" writers around the Web have posited some theories about early Top 24 eliminations.
La Times music critic Ann Powers tweeted Thursday night (Mar. 5):
"Watching Idol a little late. All people of color eliminated so far. Boo!" and "What's with the racial purge on Idol tonight?"
Meanwhile, La Times Idol Tracker Shirley Halperin responded in a piece:
"As much as some would like to draw red and blue lines in the sand, there's no denying that all four contestants gave less than stellar performances this week."
Gawker's Richard Lawson wrote:
"So didja notice anything about those four contestants what went packing last night?...

Although it sucks to see people’s dreams get crushed, don’t you agree with the rest of the country that we sent the right four people home?
There’s usually a ton of controversy about which contestants went home undeservedly, but this week I agree with the rest of America: the right four contestants were given the boot last night on American Idol. Let’s be honest: Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor, John Park and Jermaine Sellers were definitely the weakest links and we had to say goodbye.
21-year-old John Park was the first guy to get cut, which wasn’t all that surprising, given that I had already forgotten he existed (his rendition of John Mayer’s gravity had my head defying gravity. Snooze-fest!). Up next to the chopping block was Jermaine “I don’t need votes, I have Jesus” Sellers, 26. If Jermaine’s Idol fate was any indication,...

Even after being hospitalized due to complications from diabetes, MamaSox not only brought the house down on "Idol" this week, she stole the show!
momlogic's Vivian: This week's "American Idol" got off to a tumultuous start on Tuesday, but it wasn't due to any kind of nutty scandal. Our fave single-mom contestant, Crystal Bowersox, was hospitalized due to complications from diabetes -- forcing the enterprise to shift performance-schedules for the week.
So instead of leading off with the ladies as planned, producers made it a testosterone Tuesday. New daddy "Big Mike" Lynche started things off. He did strong justice to James Brown's, "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World," and the judges responded warmly.
Randy said, "I gotta give it to you! Crazy! R and B star right there!" Ellen appreciated his song choices and called him "the one to beat." Kara said she didn't know what he'd eaten that day...

Show Coverage: Four more Idol contestants said goodbye, none of them surprises. John Park and Jermaine Sellers were the two guys sent packing while on the gals' side it was time to wave farewell to Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn. The show began with another godawful lip-synced group performance. The group performances with 20 folks crowding the stage invariably have a painful, Up With People aura about them. I'm not one to brag, but did I nail it or what? You don't have to be a psychic to read the writing on the wall over at the "American Idol" terrordome, because season nine has been so full of dead wood that if the judges do revive the wild card, I really can't imagine who they would bring back.
That's why Thursday night's (March 4) elimination round was so easy to call. For me, anyway. I managed to go four-for-four, correctly predicting that smiling cowgirl Haeley Vaughn would vamoose, along with tone deaf Purple Haze frontman John Park, sanctified loony Jermaine Sellers and cute-but-bland young Whitney Houston lookalike Michelle Delamor.
I would have liked to see the judges use their executive power to make it an odd five and toss Tim Urban as well, but you can be sure the apple of Ellen’s eye will be gone next week,...

'American Idol' March 4th episode. There's definitely some talent on this season of Fox's hit reality show "American Idol". So far, things seem to be going my way. All of the my favorite contestants remain in the competition while the two I absolutely couldn't stand were forced to say their goodbyes on last night's episode.
The elimination show kicked off with the contestants singing the hit single "I Got A Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas. After the first break, host Ryan Seacrest revealed that John Park was received the lowest votes thus he was the first to be eliminated. Second to say his goodbyes was Jermaine Sellers. As for the ladies, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn were the two unfortunate ones to be eliminated.

In most cases, three out of four is a solid percentage. Imagine if a baseball player got a hit 75% of the time he came to bat.
But even when American Idol viewers eliminate the proper contestants 75% of the time, we can't help but focus on the one they got wrong. We'll try to work on this negative attitude.
Until then, we must ask: Michelle Delamor over Lacey Brown? Really?!? Has the latter proved her voice is impressive enough to compete with this season's semifinalists? At all?!?
Delamor, meanwhile, has come across as stiff occasionally... but it's at least conceivable to see her vocal skills propelling her toward the finals. Brown has no chance.
As for Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers and John Park? Goodbye and good luck. One of you smiled way too much (like a scary doll of some kind); one of you couldn't carry a tune and talked about...

We caught up with the 21-year-old Friday (March 5) to talk about the judges' harsh comments, his early front-runner status and what's next.
Q: After your performance this week, Simon made a comment about your college a cappella group getting their lead singer back. What were...

Haeley Vaughn's smile was infectious, but her uneven singing left the "American Idol" judges (and fans) frustrated.
After her shaky performance of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," Vaughn was eliminated Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Michelle Delamor. Will the 16-year-old's country/pop dreams still come true? We talked to the high-schooler from Fort Collins, Colorado, on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and more.
Q: What did you think when Kara suggested you take a year to strengthen your vocal skills?
A: I kind of agreed with her. I think that more experience and more time working on my vocals would be good. I think experience is always better, especially since I'm only 16 and this is...

Jermaine Sellers got some pretty harsh feedback from the "American Idol" judges for his semifinal performances, but said he was convinced that his faith would carry him through the negativity.
His dream came to an end, however, on Thursday, when he was voted out of the competition, along with John Park, Haeley Vaughn and Michelle Delamor. "In God, there's no failure," the 27-year-old said after his elimination.
So what's next for the Joliet, Illinois, church singer? We caught up with him Friday (March 5) to discuss that and much more.
Q: You were very outspoken about your faith on the show. Do you think your post-singing comments had anything to do with your elimination?

Former finalist Danny Gokey returned to the American Idol stage last night. Coming back to the stage that launched his music career, Danny gave an amazing performance of his new single “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” from his just released new debut album ‘My Best Days.’
Danny’s vocals were as strong as ever and we loved the whole leather jacket thing he had going on. Gokey told Ryan Seacrest that last year after one of his performances, country icon Randy Travis came up to him and asked, ‘Have you ever considered doing country?’ He said that his comment inspired him to release a country themed album.

American Idol contestants John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn were eliminated from the show last night.
On the results show Ryan Seacrest revealed that 27 million votes had been cast (that seems like a ridiculously high number to us!), the group sang “I Got a Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas (we preferred the X Factor group version last year) and Danny Gokey wowed us with “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.”
John Park was the first boy to be eliminated and we are kind of sad because we think that he actually had a great deal of untapped potential. On this week’s live show John sang ‘Gravity’ by John Mayer and the judges agreed that it was boring and lacked conviction. He sang his final song was slightly better than he did first time round, it was enough to kind of make us regret the result.

For giving bad performances two weeks in a row, Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Michelle Delamor have all been sent home. "American Idol" viewers voted that these four should not advance to the next round. The ninth season is now wilted down to eight guys and eight girls.
The departure of Haeley, Jermaine and John were somehow expected since they received nasty comments from the judges this week. But Michelle actually got praises from Kara DioGuardi and Simon Cowell. Kara called Michelle's rendition of Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" her favorite performance while Simon applauded her effort of not choosing a safe song.
Dodging the bullet and given another shot at the competition are thus Tim Urban and Didi Benami. The former has been criticized for not being good enough yet garnered votes for his looks. The latter was on the verge of tears when hearing the judges' comments on this week's performance.

Simon Cowell said during the Thursday, March 4 results show of "American Idol" that some of the compliments doled out the night before were undeserved. Who was he talking about?
Cowell didn't explicitly say he was referring to the female singers.
But one could take from both Cowell's and Ryan Seacrest's comments that Cowell watched the previous show back, which would indicate the Wednesday, March 3 women's Top 10 performances.
If that's the case, who did he mean?
Michelle Delamor, who got eliminated even though the judges praised her is an obvious choice. If Cowell watched the show back and was not as impressed, then perhaps that's how the viewers at home reacted too.
Or could he mean Siobhan Magnus, who was very polarizing with her big "Think" notes?
Or perhaps Katelyn Epperly, who Kara and Simon praised but Ellen and Randy were not as complimentary about.
Who do you think he meant?...

John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn have become the latest contestants to be eliminated from American Idol. The semi-finalists were voted off the show during tonight's live results episode after receiving the lowest number of public votes for their performances. She later recovered in time to join the Top 10 girls on Wednesday. Tonight's (more)...

Sometimes it's hard to figure out which semi-finalists deserve to go home on "American Idol." This week? Not so much. The grim parade of bad, sad and Wtf? was Macy's Day long this week, led by repeat visits from a few contestants who must have lucky rabbit feet sewn into their tracheas or compromising pictures of Simon Cowell and his enormous (alleged) Hummel figurine collection.
Either way, there's no doubt who should go home this week. Note we said should, because America has gotten it wrong before.
Number one on the list is toothy cowgirl Haeley Vaughn. Yes, she is cute as a button and so deliriously upbeat that she literally can't stop smiling, but let's face it: She's a terrible, terrible singer. Even with a swing at a song that should be a slam dunk for her (fellow teen Miley Cyrus' "The Climb") Vaughn was a train wreck.

We were kind of dreading Michelle Delamor’s performance on last night’s American Idol, as we really hate ‘With Arms Wide Open’ by Cree. However, somehow Michelle managed to pull it off well.
Randy Jackson and Ellen weren’t fans though with Randy saying she didn’t do enough with the song and Ellen saying that it ‘almost worked’. Kara and Simon agreed with us though and loved the performance.
Kara DioGuardi called it her favourite performance of Michelle’s ever, because she took a risk and had a great attitude. “You believed in it and I bought you,” she adds.
Simon Cowell agreed with Kara. He said that the first half was stronger than the second, but appreciated the judges gave a lot of contradictory advice last week, and appreciates that she tried to make the song her own.

In some ways, the first two weeks of this year's "American Idol" semifinals have felt a lot like an extension of the brutal Hollywood Week: a painful but necessary mass culling of the herd in order to get to the good stuff.
Four more singers went down Thursday night (March 4), including Michelle Delamor, Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn and John Park. Inexplicably, Tim Urban, the cute boy who has proven two weeks running that he is the luckiest guy on the stage, was given a pass, which allowed him to bust out his "what? me?" face yet again along with Todrick Hall, whose Tina Turner cover drew serious fire but also enough votes to keep him in the running.

Wednesday night's (March 3) episode of "American Idol" was, without a doubt, the best episode of the season so far. That's not to say it was perfect (Haeley Vaughn's version of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" saw to that), but there were a number of instantly memorable (and occasionally jaw-dropping) highlights. In addition to Crystal Bowersox's triumphant return from illness, there was Siobhan Magnus' rousing, left-field run through of Aretha Franklin's "Think," Lacey Brown's interesting take on Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and Lilly Scott's not-unreasonable take on the Sam Cook classic "A Change Is Gonna Come" (even though she still should have left it in the "retired" pile). Heck, even though Michelle Delamor's attack on Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" (which she re-imagined as a sort of shuffling R&B jam) was most certainly a failure, it was nice to see...

It looks like Simon Cowell, as usual, was right.
Prior to season nine, our favorite judge said a woman would win American Idol. It's still early, but Crystal Bowersox and company did nothing to prove him wrong last night.
Arriving straight from a hospital bed, but not playing any sympathy card, Bowersox led a strong contingent of female contestants, at least half of which outperformed any guy from the evening before.
We could absolutely see Crystal winning this competition... or Lilly Scott... or Michelle Delamor... or even women that struggled a bit last night, such as Didi Benami.
How many men can you say that about at the moment?
If it were up to us, it would be an easy choice to send Lacey Brown and Haeley Vaughn home this week. They simply don't have the stage presence or singing talent of the other women.
